They still have a wee way to go though to make football mainstream though. I was in Sydney a couple of weekends ago, and was at the Australia v Ghana game on the Friday night then the Waratahs v Sharks on Sat night, and the difference in demographics was marked.
On the Friday night I was sitting amongst Australian-Iraqis, Turkish-German speakers, Ghanians. I think my mate and I were the only Anglo-Celts in our row!!
Whereas the Waratah's game - middle class white bread as far as they eye could see, row upon row of polo shirts, drizabones and deck shoes! :) - with the exception of a small group of Aboriginal women and girls who had a whole load of banners supporting one of the Tah's aboriginal players.
Your right ......... actually a long way to go but its started and at most Socceroos matches the ANGLO's these days are the biggest in number.
I was also at the Ghana match, and media was poor for a Socceroo match ......... but in WC matches it builds ............ many football over here believe the Australian media is largely run by former AFF & league players with the odd cricket or union player. They are scared of football and its growing influence.
But as Mahatma Gandhi said, and maybe this could be applied to football in Australia.
"First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win."
