The Socceroos are now the 14th ranked football country in the world after FIFA's release of its latest list.
The September edition of the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking sees Brazil unmoved at the top of the table ahead of Spain and the Netherlands.
But Pim Verbeek's Australians, thanks to a 3-0 victory over Republic of Ireland in Limerick last month, have jumped two places from 16 to 14 for their highest ever position in the world rankings.
The Socceroos are by far the highest ranked team in the Asian confederation.
The next ranked team in Asia are Japan who are 40th.
Korea Republic, whom Australia meet in a friendly international in Seoul on Saturday night, are ranked 49th.
European champions Spain are gaining ground on the Brazilians and they now have a significant lead over the third-placed Dutch.
World champions Italy have also made inroads and are now joint fourth with Germany.
A total of eight 2010 World Cup qualifiers and 62 friendly matches were played in the past month, bringing the total number of A international matches played in 2009 to 509.
Many more qualifiers will be played in the next few days, which will lead to considerable movement in the next edition of the world ranking.
The next World Ranking will be published on October 7.
