Suprised no-one has made mention of the big Steven Old article in the Sunday News.

There is something a little unprofessional about getting that aired in the media before it has happened...

haven't seen it, could someone pse post the basics of what he said? tigers2008-03-24 14:55:25

Here's the link.

It's seems clear in the article that Old has been told already there is no future for him at the Nix. Tony and Ricki have handled the departure of players with class (i.e. allowing players to leave with diginity) and there is nothing in the article to suggest Old's departure is being handled any differently. Most of the "hype" is just a journalist getting carried away and trying to add a bit of "shock horror" where there probably isn't any.

Laughing stock is a bit harsh.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Also the reporter mentions Jason Spoonley?
Is that Jacob's brother?

Seems very harsh, and at odds with the way the most comings and goings have been handled so far.

I hoped that he might be given some time to improve- but I guess there are no passengers at the Phoenix...even Ricki...

cheers whitbyboy,

seems a bit strange to be talking of loaning out Costa with the youth league 'potentially' getting sorted for us

re the Old -laughing stock comment that might be down to the reporter taking some comments on this board too seriously or some comments on this board being over the top - take your pick

(I'm assuming he's an  auckland based reporter, hence the view that this board might have influenced his perception)

agree with the folks who are concerned that his has got out to the media before being announced, a bit of goss is fun, but probably best if the club announces the comings and goings

I like the way the club has treated departing playing (with dignity) and the way departing players have behaved in return (also with dignity, except that t**ser El**ch). If we want the best players to come and play for the Nix we need the Nix to be seen as a professional organisation and its supporters as passionate but fair - I really object to the Sunday News portraying the Nix, and its supporters, as callous and insensitive - bloody lazy useless NZ journalists (Oops)

I dont think Old was laughed at so much as despaired over, by many in and out of this forum. That would be a truer representation. It would come as no surprise to see him go now, it has been advocated on here since the middle of last season.

Plenty of speculation in the article, one of the more interesting parts was that Mulligan is asking a high price, which I cant see a lot of justification for, he hasnt proven himself to be of great value at any level that I can see.

According to Tony in another thread a lot of it is a load of crap, he did however say there was some truth in there. Speculate away I guess.

yeh I don't like the tone of the article much at all. I don't remember anyone laughing at Steven Old. He certainly gave his best and Ricki showed a helluva lot of faith in him.
Matheson states a lot of things as if he has all the information. Maybe the laugh will be on him!!

Makes sense really. Last season Ricki needed to provide cover while the AW's were away on international duty but from this season on the A-League will take a break for international windows so he no longer needs 3 keepers. It has to be viewed as a pragmatic decision based on a limited number of squad places and not as a direct reflection on Spoonleys performance.

I'd go the other way and get rid of Spoonley.

1: Moss is young (24?), so is Spoonley (20?), so how will Spoonley develop sitting behind Moss?
2: Paston is 31 (?) The career/ability of sportsmen are usually at peak about to enter decline at this age.
3: Get Spponley off playing somewhere else. Get the 90 min exposure he needs to develop rather than splinters in his ass from riding the pine. Neither Paston or Spoonley will develop sitting on the bench, but Spoonley does have another 10 years ahead of him so give him that chance.
4: Most likely Paston costs us more than Spoonley so there is that consideration too.

Sunday News . . . Ptffff

I'm going call this as dubious reporting.

We have the youth team yet to consider and until that is called one way or another, getting rid of some of the younger New Zealand squad members at the end of the week wouldn't make sense with the latest management of the comings and going.

The reporter is just hedging is bets and frankly I think he's there to stir the pot to get some Nix feedback.

Can't really see him getting dropped if we get the youth team.

Old did have a poor year lst year but he is still just in his early 20's.

He's good in the air and has obvious potential which is hwy he got picked up etc. With a better backline around him would he not persumably do better?

Last year all the backs looked average including O'dor who was a youth aussie team member and apparently a great prospect.

Then again if he goes, we might get siggy and i'd like that.

No, he'd just look better.

Rees looked good. Otherwise all the backs were average that's why we conceded so much.

Three for me, and two for them.

But if Mossy gets injured we wouldd be stuck with paston. I couldnt cope with that

"As Sunday News revealed exclusively on February 3 the Nix are targeting Hartlepool's Australian-based striker Joel Porter". John Matheson Sunday News.

Nice try John. First speculated on Yellow Fever in early January.

Here's the latest Pulitzer prize contender from the Sunday News - a few provocative discriptors (e.g. "sacked" and "on the brink"), no commentary and no insights.

If thats our best then we won't be in the mix at the end!!! Still short a right back, Striker, and midfielder (Dodd good CB but midfield?)

Doesnt look too bad though. With Ferrante distributing wide to Bertos and Gao, Daniel running at them from the middle, and working off Smeltz, Dodd would be interchangeable with Johnson possibly...??  Or how about Johnson at right back with Lia or Dodd in the holding role...?

Yeah and while we're at it why not throw Christie up front and Coveny in goal?

Three for me, and two for them.

What do you think of Johnson in the holding midfield role then...?
Permalink Permalink
almost 18 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
That's the perfect role for him. No way could he play right back he doesn't have the qualities to be a fullback, but he has all the qualities of a good holding midfielder.

Three for me, and two for them.

I agree, despite the right back call. That was just an option I was throwing out there. He has the temperament and workload of a solid holding midfielder. If he could fill that role, then Dodd is free to shore up the back four. He seemed capable enough as a wide defender.

I never laughed at him. I pulled a few hairs out on occassion but Old was not the only guilty party in a crap defence. O'Dor, And everyone's messiah of defence - Dodd were all guilty of substandard defending over the course of the season.

I would be very disappointed if even the blinkered eyed Dodd fans joined with others and blamed Old for all that went wrong.
