OK - thought time for another of those given the result on Friday
night and the NZFC kick off. Let's keep them honest.

Let's start with the Sunday News, in my view, week in week
out, the best performer:
- total pages dedicated to football = 2.5
- Nix - John Matheson asks the question (quite reasonably)
where Aloisi fits into the line up after the Perth win. Nothing on
the A-League otherwise.
- NZFC - while there is a good photo from the TW victory over
Waitak, there are no more than a few words under the photo, and
nothing that constitutes a match report from either that game or
the Waikato win over Otago (disappointing). There is a column of
NZFC general information with fixtures, points table and quote of
the week (that could be paid space, Im not sure). Interestingly,
there is a match report by Gavin Early on the SN website - http://www.stuff.co.nz/sundaynews/4260858a19778.html
- Sam Malcolmson's column also seems to have been relegated to
the virtual world. Not in the paper but available at - http://www.stuff.co.nz/sundaynews/4260862a19778.html.
Not clear how the column heading, Win Means Phoenix Can
Tinker, relates at all to the column - so not sure about the
sub-editing there.
- International - contrast the few lines of NZFC coverage to
1.5 pages on Juande Ramos arrival at Spurs. As football fans we
must have 6 million different sources of comment and information on
the demise of Martin Jol, so I'm not sure how the SN can justify
that kind of space. This is the kind of imbalance we need to
change - but it wont happen without people watching NZFC
games.
- Overall score 6/10 (I am a fan of the Sunday News, but think
they can do better. More NZFC please.)
What about the Sunday Star Times, which occasionally has its
moments, but overall tends to disappoint:
- total pages dedicated to football = 0.5
- Nix - nothing specific story on the Perth result (which is
very disappointing given it was played too late for the Saturday
papers), although the Phoenix was the focus of Billy Harris'
weekly column. You can find that here - http://www.stuff.co.nz/sundaystartimes/4260809a22680.html -
typically quirky from Harris
- NZFC - big ups to Harris and the Star Times for the match
report from the TW v Waitak game. The highlight.
- International - nothing
- Overall score 3/10 (sorry, but despite the NZFC match
report, half a page on football, 1 story and 1 column, is not
enough given 9 or 10 substantial stories on rugby that isnt even
being played - and wont be for another 3 months!)
Now, for the Herald on Sunday (I actually had to break my
boycott to buy it this week).
- total pages dedicated to football = 3
- Nix do not get a mention. Yes, the Nix are a Wellington team
(damn right), but Terry Maddaford did find time to draw
comparisions between the Kingz and the Knights on Friday, so
not sure why nobody could find the time for a miserly paragraph on
Friday night's win. Very average.
NZFC - great effort. Maddaford reports on the two results
yesterday, there is a preview of the Auckland v Manawatu game and a
feature on Auckland signing, Korean Ki-Hyung Lee - Well
done Smon Kay. links to the electronic versions:
International - two page spread, borrowed from The
Independent, on bad boy Jermaine Pennant. Some might enjoy
this, but given they didnt find any space for any Nix or A-League
and given they've just pinched the story from someone else, im not
especially impressed.
Overall - 5/10. Excellent NZFC performance kept the score
respectable.
The Sunday News not at its best, but still does enough to hold
off an NZFC driven challenge by the Herald on Sunday. Star Times
last.

ML, thanks for the post. It's a good read. I liked the
adjective you use for the "writing" of Billy Harris. Often I search
for a descriptor for his column and that's not one I have used.

As you noted it's bit frustrating that overseas coverage will overshadow the local stuff to the degree it does. Then again the overseas stuff is always agency/syndicated and , I guess, cheaper than getting a body to actually attend a match.

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Good work Marius. I was just looking at http://www.thewest.com.au/default.aspx?MenuID=15
at their coverage of the game on friday night. The coverage of the league as a whole is so much better than the Herald.

Good piece ML, press coverage is woefully poor here in NZ in
comparison to the rugby, but who know, with the Kiwi's and AB's
shooting themselves in the foot, footy column space might increase.

just read the sydney v jets report, and just found out about Juninho's re-injury
a bit of a laugh that Juninho slams the refs for not protecting the players, then Matthew Breeze slams him into the dust, thereby injuring him
