It may be slightly off topic, but having lived in NZ, I know u guys are gonna do it tough against the AB's with the WC on now.

One thing I've always loved about OZ... we don't have a dominant footy code that has subsumed everything like you and the US, Canada, Fiji, etc.

Well, good luck for Phoenix. I hope u guys do well, even make the finals. Well done on the start so far, makes the Knights look like sh*te.

But honestly, our only truly *national* footy code is soccer. That is, Aussie Rules is South Rugby League is North. No Winner.

Unfortunately you will always play second string.

Ideas?

I'm lining up a weekend extravaganza of sports....all codes....!!  Starting tonight with the MIGHTY Warriors, tomorrow morning watching France vs Argentina in the opening game of the RWC then tomorrow night heading to the stadium to half enjoy my rugby season ticket watching the Wellington Lions bore their way to victory.

Go home, watch the AB's demolish Italy then get up and watch En-ger-land beat Israel in the Euro qualifier at Wembley.  Install some more of my new kitchen on Sun morning then get amped and excited about the the best sporting episode in my life....the PHOENIX.

Geez, not so gutted about the missus leaving me now.....bring it all on and no one to ask permission from!!!

There is a massive buzz in Welli regarding the Phoenix and its gathering great momentum all the time - would certainly be helped by a win or two and one on Sunday would bring the house down.  We will continue to rise regardless of the RWC being on and those that experience the Fever will become infected and addicted......

The tide is turning (yellow) in Wellington and eventually throughout NZ as they get exposed to the beautiful game.

Woop woop!!!

my guess is that 30, even 20 years ago no one in Aus would have predicted the rise of football

cultures do change, whether through global media influences (compare tv and kids fashions/attitudes/speech in nz now with 30 years ago - we've gone from being a little bit of the Brit empire' to being just another consumer of US 'entertainment')

or immigration - apart from (white) South Africans and Pacific Islanders, I reckon the vast majority of NZ's and Aus's immigrants have been and will be football fans

So on my 77th birthday (God willing) I might just get to see the sports news dominated by football

The AFL might have something to say about your assertion that football is the only national code.  They have more teams and more spectators in just as many states.

You face the same issues we do, just with different events.  State of Origin and AFL Grand Final time will always be difficult times to get crowds to football in Sydney and Melbourne respectively, in the same way that we'll always battle the Super 14 final, NPC final and World Cup.

I'll give you one thing though, football in Australia is much closer to achieving a lasting place in the national conscience than it is in New Zealand.  Maybe one day we'll find our own fabulously wealthy benefactor to kick our sport permanently into the limelight.

Until then, at least the Fever are here to win the supporters' league!

See you all Sunday.

For FC's Sake - say hi to Juninho for us!

Guy.

surely the best thing about 2007, is to be living in wellington

a little oasis of sporting joy in a national desert that floats alone down here in the south pacific

in a world that is awash with football

I want victory so bad on Sunday.  I really thought the name 'Yellow Fever' was a bit naff at first.  But its true.  I have yellow fever x2.

Agreed Liv1, there's only one game on this planet this weekend that sets my heart racing

for the first time in my life a game here is more important than an England international

and as for the rugby 'world' cup  - you'd have to say it's a pretty small world - did aliens come and kidnap 80% of the human race, while the IRB were reminiscing about rudyard kipling and the price of Pink gin????

Ok. I just tested the water. like i did on the knights forum.

I think u guys are for real. Go Welli.

Forget all that oz sh*t, if u live & die the b&w then ure in, welcome and all the best.

*U GUYS ARE NOT THE KNIGHTS*... its now clear. Phoenix is big.

(sorry for pretending u were;)

How do the All-Whites fit with this? I always thought they should wear black to push the envelope (82 aside). I saw the whites in black at Parramatta WC 1997 and they looked awesome. Why the "not wearing the national colour" thing?

All NZ nat team games at westpac forever onward.

OK, I guess its like saying... "Do You remeber Sean Fitzpatrick, or Jonah Lomu" and half the country says "who?"

Sort of like that. See the bind.

Yeah I must admit to missing that about Australia myself, growing up playing league and football in NSW only to move to NZ where it's all rugby rugby rugby. Put me off the code for a few years because I was so sick of NZ's obsession with it! Especially when other NZ athletes get ignored at it's expense (when NZ won world championships in softball and rowing) Haha but i'm used to it now, I love all three sports and I've been in NZ long enough to cheer for the All Blacks... occasionally haha

You don't live in Victoria, do ya mate? Here it's Aussie Rules first, second and third. I'd imagine in NSW it's the same but with League.

the rugby world cup should only have 8 teams... in football it's hard enough qualifying for the final 32, but in rugby it's like...'oh you guys have a rugby team? you should enter the world cup Mozambique,it'll be great fun losing by 100 points!"

Cutting it down is the worst thing that can be done for the sport. The prelim matches provide practice runs for the top teams, and valuable experience and exposure for the smaller unions. Portugal will get their asses handed to them, but they'll still gain experience from playing the ABs. It helps grow the game. Sure, some prelim matches are uncompetitive, but look at pool D. Every single game played there will influence who gets to the finals, with the only exception being Georgia-Namibia. If you only car about the top 8 teams, ignore the preliminaries and only watch the finals. Cutting back the teams is throwing the baby out with the bathwater. 20 is a perfect size, and I hope the IRB doesn't cut back to 16 for 2011.

Cut it down makes sense I think - maybe two pools of six. five pool matches, semis, final. Far fewer one sided mismatches that nobody is interested in.

Portugal will not be any better as a side for playing the All Blacks once every decade.

But, they seem to have extended the world cup under the belief they can grow the game internationally and to create ther perception of a global sport. But, the reality is that no teams have really come on in 20 years of rugby world cups. it is still the same old faces. Maybe Italy - but only bc they have a bunch of expats and regular competition in 6 nations.

Well i've been watching the phoenix, the cricket 2020, the formula 1 , and the rugby world cup.The sport at the moment has been massive and most welcome (though lack of sleep may become a factor...). I'm planning to head up to Taupo to watch the A1 at some stage too.

I think it's a shame that we can't support each other's codes but to be honest, the reality is that we are competing for the same dollars (at least with football and rugby).  The perception is that we've got a better chance of going further with the rugby than we ever will with the footy, and that's the bit that has to change before we get more of the traditional (NZ) sponsors on side.
