DP getting it wrong again:

http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/hutt-valley/10034997/Reservoir-lake-drained-to-banish-organism

More than 2000 million litres of water is being drained from a reservoir as Greater Wellington Regional Council tries to get rid of a harmless organism

and

The council begun draining one of the two storage lakes, north of Upper Hutt, in an effort to remove the organic compound geosmin.

I'm the first to boot Worthlesston and the Doom-onion but that's a good piece. It gives the view according to Ernie (and I'll grant you its all quotes) without any spin from the writer.

I do hope Ifill gets citizenship and I guess Timmins too. That helps add some 'bulk' to the squad that perhaps is not available from domestic players and would not blow the budget out. Both would do the job and can play mins if needed (ok Ifill may be subject to fitness) Bet Hogg is wondering why he is turning down chances. Based salary is $45k which would probably still allow him to do some study while he is playing...

Just seen this. Shocking bit of journalism, basic schoolboy error, they took their eye off the ball writing this. I mean are they removing the Geosmin or the Actinobacteria, (unnamed I might add), that is supposedly causing the production of the water effecting earthy smelling compound?

It's no wonder kids don't know anything these days.

Still couldn't resist kicking it off with this though, could they!

I tweeted the Doom Post yesterday asking why there was no preview of the upcoming Phoenix home game. They replied that their sports editor says they will do it later in the week closer to the game.

I replied and said with it being a long weekend, if I had kids I'd be planning what to do now, and that later might be too late.

I also linked them to the RMHouse family ticket appeal and said "How cool is it that Yellow Fever fans have raised this money to send a family from Ronald McDonald House to the Phoenix game? Great community interest story"... nothing.

Today I tweeted again saying why is there STILL no coverage of the upcoming Phoenix game. I asked if it was because they have already written their poor crowds continue story for Tuesday and don't want to risk stuffing it up.

I find their lack of coverage offensive and obscene.

Especially when they have NFL and Baseball on the FRONT page of their sports section - not that I have anything against either of those, but where is the coverage of the local team contributing to their community with school and sports club initiatives?

And their football coverage today is just a small sidebar about Ricki applying for the Indian National team role, and two regurgitated copy stories about European football. Nothing at all about the A League. NOTHING about the David Villa scandal/story. Nothing about the weekend's games.

Sympathise BW...

The daily newspaper was once an essential medium for football fans.

But these days they are becoming more and more irrelevant, both through the emergence of more focused new media, and through their own tired practices (such as not taking cogniscance of a publishing schedule which would better serve the interests of readers).

And I say that as a former sports journalist.

Welcome to MSM and exactly why places like this exist. Because Herald/Dom Post/Stuff dropped the ball years ago and people don't go there for their news anymore.

If it ain't negative, especially about the Phoenix or anyone associated with them, then the Dompost don't want to know. They have almost always had a negative stance. Perhaps, they forsaw the threat towards thugby - who knows?

What you should have done Brandon is said that a certain ex owner was very vaguely, interested in your idea - even though we all know there is not one ounce of truth in it and you would have made the front page.

If the Doompost can get absolutely anything to take a cheapshot at him, they will use it to maximum effect and front page it. I thought the Fleet Street toilet papers were the lowest of the low, but since the merger of the Evening Post and the Dominion, their journalistic ability and intregrity has dropped down almost as low. Hence the large numbers of people no longer subscribing.

They have an article in the Doom Post this morning previewing the A League.

It's just copied and pasted from AAP, and so it is exclusively focused on the Melbourne Derby. Not a single sentence about how the Phoenix are playing in Wellington this weekend.

No wonder people are unaware the games are on.

FFS!

And, as pointed out to me by JonoNewton, they use the old Brisbane Roar logo too. Muppets!

That's a pretty dire effort by the Dim Post and they deserve every bit of fan bollocking they get.

But it's a long way from being the worst-ever football match preview on the NZ landscape. Check out the link below, which chronicles the Sunday News effort in 1997 in previewing the Central United v Nelson Suburbs national league match.

Sunday News' Dylan Cleaver - now Herald Sports Editor - ran an article "Central confident of win".

Problem was, the match had actually been played the day BEFORE - and Central lost 2-1.

Hard to beat

I would have thought that the bit on the right of that photo that says "Phoenix v Jets, Venue: Westpac Stadium" would have made it pretty clear, although I am probably just overestimating the intelligence of people in Wellington.

so bit disappointed we didn't make the Dom Post today with article about Ronald McDonald House, I know they were on a deadline but it would have been nice to have it in today's paper instead of possible being in Monday's one after the fact.

Most people would only read the weekly paper at work anyway, more people will see the story on a Monday

Normally that would be fine but Monday is public holiday so pretty much not going to be read either. Oh well, at least we tried.

I don't believe it.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/10665231/Nathan-Burns-the-key-man-in-fine-Phoenix-win

Unbelievable. Only Stuff could open a story after that performance with a downer of a sentence. How they managed to focus on pouring cold water on it, I'll never know.

AND Hamish Bidwell is wrong.

The game against Victory is ABSOLUTELY NOT the only game that matters. According to the soothsayers of doom at Stuff, like Danny Hay, who inist on regurgitating Mike Cockerill's bullshit, crowd numbers are a critical factor for the Phoenix.

Well, if that is the case the game against the Jets is bloody important too. It is the one people will be talking about at work on Tuesday. It is the performance that will have a MAJOR influence on whether we get 7,000, 10,000 or more against WSW on Friday 7th of November.

Also, going into the Victory game, the players confidence is sky high. It's sky high because of the last two results, AND the way the team played in those two wins. Reviewing what worked, and what they can do better is CRITICAL to how the team will play against the Victory, so next Monday's game is demonstrably NOT the only game that matters.

Hyperobole = journalism.

We still have 24 games to go and we are one point behind the leaders (including the Tards). It's not the most important game.

It will show if we are a contender or not though - a good early indication.

I think based on our trajectory we are probably hitting them a couple of games early and are still slightly underdone.
