I don't know the actual stats but I'd be surprised if he's beaten the league winners in the season they've won the competition.
Thanks Piney. I suspected that was the case but I'm WAY too lazy too check.

Weren't we still a chance at the top 4 until the end last season,or am I thinking of the season before?
We were just scraping into the top 6 last season, so you are thinking of the season before
I guess the question really is if you assume that we finish outside the 6, or in 6th, what would ricky have to do next year to earn his plus 2? At some point you really want to see us back in the top 4. We were a long way off the pace last year, and same again this year. Need to know that he can keep us moving forward and keeping pace with the top sides
Well if we are to keep pace with top sides we should be keeping pace with their investment into their squads and football operations.
The DomPost are scaring me now because they've proved to me that they can be diabolical as well as informative and accurate...
I see that the Doom Post have said they are "100% behind the Nix". As some wit has already posted " yeah! with a knife"
But in all honesty..we really need to have a good relationship with our local rag. They are our conduit to the public.
Its not at all surprising they have made this statement. The club is now owned by a group of the richest businessmen in wellington. The DP knows which side its bread is buttered on. We can expect better and more comprehensive coverage....which can only be good for the club.

Anyone able to tell me the Dompost free kids code b4 I go to book online?

"The failure to identify and then retain the exciting New Zealand talents of Kosta Barbarouses and Marco Rojas is a huge black mark"
I just don't get people spitting this out all the time. He signed both teenagers out of nowhere. If that isn't identifying talent then what is? Marco was injured for about a season ffs.
I liked this:
Brisbane coach Ange Postecoglu has shown what can be done with a clear vision, belief in young talent and an adherence to modern, possession-based football.
Young talent? Makes it sound like they had a bunch of home-developed 19 year-olds out there rather than the Albanian, German, Canadian-Japanese and Brazilian imported frontline they actually had.
Ange cant hold on to young talent either
My favourite was:
Maybe because Melbourne Victory famously (and arrogantly) already did that and came up with... wait for it... wait for it... their own assistant coach!
why did Morrison and the new cashed-up owners not conduct a worldwide search for alternatives to Herbert?
Maybe because Melbourne Victory famously (and arrogantly) already did that and came up with... wait for it... wait for it... their own assistant coach!
...and exactly who was going to conduct the search seeing as the owners admit they have little to no football knowledge, have yet to appoint a board that has football knowledge and had every chance they would have pissed Ricki enough that he would have walked leaving us with no manager at all seeing as he was contractless.
Why is he allowed to write about football?
He's just trolling, at least it's actually marked as opinion for once.
But yeah, there's pretty obvious answers to most of his points.
But yeah, there's pretty obvious answers to most of his points.
from his copy of Hay, when he writes
"Of course Herbert is also the All Whites coach and wants to lead the Oly-Whites at next year's Olympics"
when did Ricki actually tell him this? I'm pretty sure never
Is that Sam on the right behind the portable urinal?
I'm guessing he had to have a scathing review of drawing away with the team he rates so highly due to the fact he had already written his opinion piece
Yep! More positivity from the Doom Post today.
Headline..." Phoenix drag themself off the bottom of the table"
FFS have they got some sort of agenda. Why always the negative slant. Why not a headline?
"brillant defensive effort gets Nix a vital away point against rampant Brisbane"
These people should be happy now they have gunned down the Nix owner.....are they after the club now?
I have to ask this question - if Ange Postecoglu was available would you prefe him to ricki? If the answer is yes, then isn't the premise of Worthington's article (which is fairly rubbishy) actually correct? i.e. is there not at least an argument that they should have looked around before rushing to give him a contract? It's not as if he is in such demand that he's going to run off elsewhere, his stock clearly has fallen since the world cup.
For all of the good he had done, he's never had the phoenix playing football good enough to win the competition. I don't know the actual stats but I'd be surprised if he's beaten the league winners in the season they've won the competition.

Having succeeded in sacking Terry, JD goes after Ricki.
That's a little harsh Doloras. He's wrong but he's allowed his opinion.
Would we want Postecoglu instead of Ricki now? Possibly. Despite the propaganda we play good quality football often. Newcastle, Perth, Melbourne, first half Gold Coast. Against Brisbane we played to suit the circumstance. No it wasn't 'Waikato FC' football but unlike Adelaide we got a point.
Would we have wanted him at the time he started in Brisbane? Not a chance.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
I withdraw and apologise, or at least add a winky smiley to the above.
Phoenix beat Newcastle in 2007/08 and Melbourne Victory in 2008/09.
Thanks Piney. I suspected that was the case but I'm WAY too lazy too check.
What? You didn't just remember Michael Ferrante's only Phoenix goal and Smeltzy's scorcher (the best ever goal by a Phoenix player)?
Shame on you.
I remember the events but not which season they were in.
Phoenix beat Newcastle in 2007/08 and Melbourne Victory in 2008/09.
So that's 2 out of 4 seasons. Pretty good.
the Herald does better (and shows more 'loyalty') with their headline

Really? I think we'd all be a little bit keener than that to get him here...which to me does at least vindicate some of what worthington expressed so ineloquently.

Never the point I was trying to make. But in the end that's more fool us really isn't it??
A lot of people on here seem to treat even the slightest of criticisms of Ricky as the ultimate betrayal - I'm not sure why. He has his strengths, and he is a decent coach but I do fear that his limitations are eventually going to be exposed as the level of the league raises.

^ Agree with JDeenis. And would take Ange in an arrhythmic heartbeat.

This. Ricki has a budget given by Welnix sufficient to keep the team ticking over while they figure out what to do next, not to create an Invincible Nixcelona. Why does anything think that Welnix would spring for a better coach who isn't subsidized by NZF when they won't spring for a striker?
I have heard no sensible suggestions about how Ricki could do better with the resources he has. (Unless you count "sign Clapham because he'll be cheaper".) The tools bleating about "Ricki doesn't trust young talent" ignore the fact that he signed Kosta and Marco; and ignore the question of exactly where the next Kosta or Marco are coming from. Dakota Lucas doesn't quite cut it.Doloras2011-11-16 11:04:44

Surely everyone has the expectation of this season as a write off?
