The Nix

Dear Sunday News,

The Knicks are a New York basketball team.  The Wellington Soccer team is named the Phoenix.  Your inability to use the name is an accurate indictment on the half-arsed football reporting you feed us each week.

K ?

Ever heard of shortened nicknames? Ever heard of Tottenham Hotspur being referred to as 'spurs'?

Anyways, the nicks are, as stated, the Nicks, not the "Nix". Even if they were also called the "nix", it's not like two teams from toally different parts of the world can't share a nickname . . Spurs comes to mind, again.

Pedant.

I just don't like it...  I understand some do.

I wasn't aiming for pedantic, aiming to remember the name the club is actually christened with.

You might be thinking of "Nichts".

Just say no to "nix". Unless you`re talking about the half man half fish.  http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/nix

Brid that gets birthed out of fire, half man half fish. . . . Mythological theme seems to be running pretty consistently . . .

Agreed sir. Vigarous Viking FC would have been much better.

Hey, I didn't vote for it either, but that's what we've got so let's run with it.

Exactly, I don't actually like the name 'per se' but I'm going to support this team anyways.

I happen to like "Phoenix". Heck of a lot of better than "Jets" - sounds like an MSL (or NFL) team. Besides the obvious basketball (and state capital) collusions (that may be the wrong word, but I'm sticking with it), at least Phoenix sounds like a football team.

I think the word "Nix" actually appeared on this website as a suggested nickname before that issue of the Sunday News was printed. I'll try to look back and see if I can find a dated post. . . .

MORE: I uploaded my signature to Photobucket on April 11, it contained the word "Nix" then, which I sourced from a post on this website. Not sure if that pre-dates the Sunday News article, can anyone confirm?.

How about we call us  " The Team that has to preform this season or else it maybe the last team NZ to play in the A-league ever." ....To long?

And we should call ourselves the fans that is....Wait for it...Order Of the Phoenix.

That would get all the Harry Potter fans on board and maybe they can come to the games dressed in yellow robes.

P.S. I am joking. If i see people wearing harry potter robes..I am going to drown myself.

Why don't we just re-label them The Canaries? I mean the Phoenix is a sort of bird ain't it. And they even play in yellow on green. Makes perfect sense to me. The Nix is just another Americanism that I could do without in my good old Kiwi life. Why do we have to copy the Yanks all the time. Like Halloween for christsake. Good opportunity for me to give the kids that shi**ing chocolate or tins of baked beans. Knock on my door at your peril:-p
Go the Canaries.
