Whats the point in calling the team to play LA the Oceania Team if all the best Aussi players aren't going to play.    eliot1232008-07-31 07:42:41

......Cos Australia aren't Oceania any more, maybe?

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

i think this game will be a flop now if the phoenix were to play LA in Auckland that might be a different story

I disagree. An Oceania team might appeal to the sizeable Pacific Island population to support their countrymen, ie Fijians coming along to support Roy Krishna. Whereas if it were Wellington vs the Galaxy...well, Aucklanders wouldn't support their own football team, why would they support ours?

I dunno. I think this game is probably quite a big risk (of course depending how much they have to foot to get the galaxy to play). Maybe they can attract a good crowd, but they will certainly not have the benefit of the enormous media hype and buzz that followed Beckham last year. Been there done that i suspect will be the media attitude. Also, a team assembled for a one off game is hard for a popuation or football fanbase to identify wih and will also mean the game is seen even more as a "friendly exhibition game" than was the PHoenix v Galaxy match. Absolutely nobody will care about he result. But, we'll see. Maybe they can pull it off.

It surely won't be as big as the game last year:

Novelty effecet of Beckham will have worn off slightly, might be perceived as an annual event where "it doesn't matter if we miss it, we'll just go next year".

If the New Zealand public, even within the fever capital, hardly identifies with the All Whites "remeber the Vanuatu attendance last year?), then they will identify and care even less about an Oceania team chucked together at the last minute.

I disagree with the Pacific Island comment, in an ideal world yes, that would be fantastic, and maybe in a few years young poly boys will have some local role models to look up to,, but 99% os kiwis won't know that name

Something ood that could come out of it would be giving Costa the opportunity to show him up again!

A bit doom and gloom, but have to be realistic, not blindly optimistic.
Oh Wellington is wonderful. We got the wind, the rain and the phoenix. Oh Wellington is wonderful.

I'm gonna try to head up to AK for the game, it won't have nearly as much buzz and atmosphere as the nix game, but seeing what an Oceania XI can do against becks, donnavan and co would be interesting.

You know we belong together...

anyone remember how much the tickets were to the Phoenix-Galaxy game?

tickets are now available (Visa cardholders today and tomorrow), with the cheapest tickets at $85 for the 'Bronze Uncovered' - seating plan not currently available, so no idea what that means...

general public sale from 9am on Wednesday

and on another note, how is the Oceania side going to include 3 players from major teams outside Oceania given that it's not an international window nor a competitive fixture nor during the offseason?

I'm pretty sure I read/heard somewhere that they needed 22k to break even.

Sorry Robbo, but if you asked a thousand Aucklanders (Fijian or otherwise) who Roy Krishna was, they'd point you to the nearest dairy (or the next nearest). (no offence intended, just stating facts.)

Great concept but.... actually no, crap concept. It's little more than a doughnut for the corporates. Little Jimmy and his old man who played a bit too couldn't care less... there's no 'public' buy in.

And even if LJ does convince Dad because he wants to see Becks... where's the flow-on effect for the local game???

cheapest $85??? surely not. They're not exactly going to get a lot of maybes to become probablys with those numbers, and some probables would become possibles only.

Pretty sure I paid $85 last year for the Galaxy game and remember that also got you into Friday nights A League game against Adelaide.
The cheapest are $85 and then go $120, $140 and $160 depending on where you want to sit and if they're covered. A bit rich for me and I suspect will be out of reach for the average punter which is who you'd think they were trying to target.

What, because the Phoenix are playing such crowd pleasing football at the moment?

I am starting to warm to the idea a bit more now about an Allstars team playing...but it's probably still going to flop, especially if their ticket price are not right as some of the other discussion suggests.

You should stick to commenting on what you know. There were masses of Fijians a year or 2 back when Waitak played Ba. Definetly about 70% Ba supporters

Won't Roy Krishna be in Japan with Waitakere for the CWC?

You're right, I hadn't taken that into account.

However there'll still hopefully be other Island players in the team. Krishna was just an example I used.

It's supposed to be a Wynton testimonial, but not even a gaurantee he'll be there

What exactly does Brian Laudrup have to do with Oceania football? French players born in New Caledonia yes, Australians maybe at a pinch, but if you're going to start having former Danish internationals who have never played in Oceania, why not just call it an international invitational team?

Exactly! This is becoming a bit of a joke now. A decent Auckland side of current players V The Galaxy has some merit.

To watch the wheel chair brigade take to the feild pretty much insults the paying public. A Rufer testimonial match now?? And he might not even make it??

Someone told me today that it's highly possible Beckham doesn't make it and the contract is with the Galaxy but lacks the 45 minutes appearance clause the Nix had in theirs.

I have a large gut feeling that this could really turn to custard which in fairness, is NOT what the Auckland paying public deserve.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

The Ruf, The Ruf, The Ruf is on Fire!!
