If the FFA do get there hopeful deal which I think they will, I still cant see tight-arse SKY paying more for it which puts a doubt in meeting the metrics for another 3+3.

Does Gallop hold his nerve and wait to see if Optus is a player or take the Fox offer that seems to  be in place.

Key summary points.

From 442 seems SBS will not be bidding for the next Socceroo rights and we will be with Fox , a FTA commercial and other things and a bumper deal is hoped.

>Foxtel has offered to renegotiate the A-League deal with immediate effect with FFA

>Foxtel has offered a 'significant increase' on the $40 million per annum currently offered, and will onsell selected games to its preferred FTA partner Channel 10

>FFA can't entertain rival bids until October 1st - make a decision to accept Foxtel's offer now or wait and see what others can offer (7, 9, Optus etc)

>Foxtel owns all Socceroos rights for the final stage of WCQ as they have purchased them from Lagardere Sports - will potentially use this as carrot to entice FFA

FFA confident of bumper deal despite lack of 'roo rights

Even though the next stage of the Socceroos Asian World Cup qualifiers will not be included in the next television broadcast deal, FFA CEO David Gallop is hopeful that the A-League will have a free-to-air presence.

Currently, FFA does not own or control the media rights for the next phase of the World Cup qualifiers. The AFC retained those rights and assigned them to its commercial partner Lagadere - previously known as World Sports group.

At the moment FFA are in an exclusive negotiating period with Fox Sports but that expires at the end of September. And looking ahead Gallop said the governing body was looking for the new TV rights deal to be a combination that includes the existing rights holder as well as a terrestrial component as well.

“We have made it clear we are looking for a mix of the existing arrangement with Fox Sports,” he said. “But we are looking for a free to air partner as well.”

Even though the inclusion of the pivotal third phase of the Socceroos Asian World Cup games will not be included with the A-League TV rights, Gallop said that the Socceroos friendly games will be part of the bundle.

“There are aspects of the Socceroos that are held by Lagadere,” he said. “That’s always been the case and we are continuing to work through how that will impact on the upcoming negotiation. It is the last round of qualifiers but there are other games that are held by us to sell that is part of the interesting mix that we are going through at the moment.”

However, SBS, who broadcast the 2014 Socceroos World Cup Qualifiers says it will not show the Australian national team’s attempt to qualify for the 2018 version.

“At this point in time the next stage of the Asian World Cup Qualifiers does not form part of SBS’s football offering,” said a spokesperson for the network.

I have  been thinking this is one of those line in the sand moments ... One and maybe two games on a commercial FTA broadcast parnter and Socceroos live FTA ... or wait and see if Optus 7 / 9 will pay more.

Fox also indicating they could do it for this season ... meaning its live on a commercial FTA station...

Nothing on NZ in the article but I guess no change for this year and a change for the following year...

Good news IMO ...

Optus interest has changed everything. We're in a period of unprecedented change and disruption for the networks. SVOD, VOD and the internet have obviously made a huge impact on how and also importantly 'when' people are consuming media, and this is impacting on the Advertising dollar – which is how the networks have always made their money.

This is making for a lot of uncertainty. People are tuning in to Netflix or Stan or Presto or what have you for serials and movies, and also consuming media at times that suit them, making the placement of premium advertising spots harder to gauge/sell as well.

Sports programming has continued to grow and deliver, and creates premium spots etc, and so are being viewed as one of the only real certainties to underpin the networks and guarantee advertising dollars moving forward.

So this is not just about the A leagues worth, it's about the value of sports programming in general. Which is why we are seeing new players coming out of the woodwork and also the TV networks coming out swinging even for SOKKAH.

Amazing how your FTA TV networks actually show sport and National Sport at that I must say and the public support for it is there. In NZ our FTA funding and advertising goes to sharkty reality shows like Bachelor, House Wives, Block and leaves SKY TV as the sole sports content provider though there is some minor stuff showing on Duke thats less relevant to kiwis (AFL). Our general public couldn't care less about sports being on FTA. Now with online stuff theres a huge shift and FTA are still relying on Reality TV shows to grab the audiences.

thought there was some kind of legislation in Aussie that some national sport had to be FTA? or something?

This is going to sound callous but increasing the salary cap substantially is going to increase the price of Australian players, but because we have a captive market in NZ there is no competition and our players won't increase as much. Of course senior players and players which are good enough to be imports in Australia will be on the same wage as senior Australian players just to keep the harmony going, but on average our youngsters should be cheaper. So it could be an advantage to us.

It doesnt make much sense to almost double the salary when most clubs are losing money. The clubs are probably asking for 6 million as their pay outs from the FFA but for the cap to remain as similar levels. Getting 1-2 mil above covering the salary cap payments would make a world of difference to the viability of some clubs.

This is to allow them (FFA or the clubs) to encourage former decent players one last big pay day before retiring.

The new A-League head has just had an interview published…. full transcript here http://www.a-league.com.au/article/head-of-hyundai-a-league-tackles-the-big-questions/o0j91su89w2q1ke7ylfz554ay#comments

This stood out for me it was a question and answer … I through FMD is this a sign we are leaving Fox for Optus…

Quwestion
That’s a fascinating point. How will the game be consumed in the future, do you think?

Answer
If you think about subscription TV and how it’s consumed and where it can be rolled out, it brings a natural restriction.

But if this game is going to be consumed through a Telco, it actually opens up a much broader application of consumption and therefore commercial ability.

The reasons now are very different to the reasons four years ago about where [to expand] because if you grab your phone or a device and watch a game, you could be anywhere.\

Question
So a consumer in Asia having a Telco with rights to the A-League could watch on their device?

Answer
We are more and more getting asked that question.

I have already asked our media guys to give me an answer in two areas of Asia in respect to inquiries people have who want to tap into our game from Hong Kong, Indonesia…

I think that’s the future.

Meh FFA are going to bring out an app next season that combines every other app around and put them in one place. Nothing about TV except for some strange 7plus+ app, Out of all the TV channels they only had Foxtel app and 7 plus to be combined - no SBS or any other TV station.

Very interesting article from the Fin Review....

The battle for soccer broadcasting rights could be wrapped up by Christmas, with broadcasters this week receiving tender documents from Football Federation Australia requiring bids to be lodged by December 9.

In a surprise move, FFA has given the broadcasters a little over two weeks to bid for a new deal covering at least four years from mid-2017 onwards

From 442... http://forum.insidesport.com.au/2456480/In-a-worl...

Twitter is priming itself to play a central role on the upcoming battle for the rights to broadcast soccer in Australia, but has vowed it does not want to be a “disruptor”

Jonno Simpson, head of partnerships and food at Twitter Australia, told Mumbrella that the FFA broadcast rights hunt would be the first time Twitter had joined in the negotiation process for sporting rights locally.

The tender for the broadcast rights to the Hyundai A-League closes on Friday, with the FFA hoping to realise as much as $80m per season amid increased interest from free-to-air broadcasters.

The social media network has worked closely with the Seven Network in Australia, with its first major sports streaming event the Melbourne Cup, while in the US it has a $10m deal to broadcast the NFL’s Thursday Night Football.

Many media reports coming out that the following has been signed off on and future negotiation.

Optus have pulled out of the bidding leaving only Fox to bid.... remember the current A-League deal is about 25 million.

A four year Fox deal to broadcast 5 five games ... 50 mil per year.

Leaving FFA still to sell the following.

1] Saturday night plus finals to a commercial FTA station ... estimates between 10 and 15 million, will happen after BB deal is signed.

2] Overseas sales ??????

3] The sixth game when we have two extra teams ....

What are 2 & 3 worth ?????

So a short four year deal somewhere between 70 to 85 million is my guess.. essentially a threefold increase in cash, plus a better match and by far better channel on FTA ...  screaming out is the need to build ratings...

Whether this is good or bad is subjective I guess ...

Had some time to think in the car had to drive to Sydney and back..

If 80 million was the goal, they may actually get it or more, we are way to early to determine what the final figure will be. I think they will get the 80 million or go very close to it.

The deal as I understand it is Fox for the 10 team A-League will pay 57 million per year for 6 years including broadcast cost. Plus add on products to sell.

So Fox 57 million
Plus sale of Digital rights
Sale of Saturday night game to either 7, 9 or 10,
Sale of international rights to the A-League

Plus provision to grow to 12 or more teams with Fox to pick up broadcasting’s costs and the match can be sold to either Fox, a commercial FTA, or both.

Lets put some numbers behind wants known.
Fox 57 Million
Digital low 2 million high 7 million
FTA TV low 5 million high 15 million
Overseas sales ????

This is a low of 64 million plus international sales and a high of 79 million plus international sales

On top of this we can paid for Socceroo and Matilda matches by AFC and I have read 16 million per year.

Re the FTA TV, I think it will get a reasonable figure consider this.
SFC V WSW 3 games == cul to date 3 games
SFC V MV 3 games === cul to date 6 games
SFC V MH 3 games === cul to date 9 games
WSW V MV 3 games === cul to date 12 games
WSW V MH 3 games === cul to date 15 games
MV V MH 3 games === cul to date 18 games
MV V AU 3 games === cul to date 21 games
Roar games SFC, MV-
– MH, WSW 6 games === cul to date 27 games
Plus finals 5 games === cul to date 32 games
Plus Socceroo friendlies 3 games == cul to date 35 games..

That is 35 quality games that should get decent crowds and rate. Also the FTA has no broadcast costs other than its panel.

Gallop can’t change the ratings..

Plus the sale of their new match, when they add another two teams.
