I remember saying on here after the finals that the Aussies would find a way around the ban so he could go to the Olympics and I've been proved correct. Same old Aussies, always cheating.

You suspend someone for 15 months, thats it! A little harsh for the actual offence once seen, but still, thats it. Now, you suspend him, fine him for the length of the Olympics but remove the suspension, then after the Olympics, you suspend him again.

In laymans terms, it's called "Cooking the books" - aka "Cheating"

Not quite as simple as your post indicates IMO.

Its hard being a Socceroos and Mariner to defend this .. but will give as best I can why and how it happened.

How is easy the Mariners for their owe reasons decided to put a massive effort into challenging the original panels findings . Why .. as a statement to all present and future players the club will back you in difficult times and second driven by sheer greed and commercialism over on selling Danny given they hold a three year contract.

Why .. did the original decision change IMO because the Mariners hired one of the best QCs in the country to challenge the original ruling and said they would take it past their to the world sports governing body  for a new hearing, if they failed .. playing very very hard and tough.

The argument put by the QC was based on Equity meaning that the QC argued the original decision was to harsh, given what the player would miss out on. Equity simply says does the punishment reflect the crime and has justice been done for all parties

No argument about the length but was if fair for a player to effectively have a life time band from going to the Olympics (football under 23 age limit) and second given that at the Olympics there are many European club talent scouts is it fair or justice not to be allowed to play in front of those said same talent scouts, for very lucrative playing contracts.

The arguments were put to a retired judge, another QC and a former Socceroo (with some legal background as I understand it).

So what has been Danny punishment, Danny was given the captaincy of the U / 23 side going to the last US tour . He was taken off the tour .. he will miss 9 international from the suspension until the Olympics he will also miss a number of Olyroo training camps, plus his A-League match ban. Phus the over hanging if he blink sideways he is in deep trouble next time.  Further he has to convince the coach he is match fit and two other keepers one already playing in Europe have a change to push for their inclusion in the Olympic side.

Having said all of the above .. my second son aside from playing is a state referee so I can see the argument that a ban is a ban. I guess the argument is when the ban affects such key things as a lifetime ban in getting to the Olympics and possible future contracts . Worth potentially millions to the player did the original punishment allow for this impact on the players career.

So not so much an Aussie ruse to get him in the Olympic .. but more a club determined to support a player to the end .. and protect their own commercial interest.

sorry for the essay

When they first said he struck the ref, I thought he'd punched him. and they said immediately there'd be a lengthy ban. When I saw the actual incident, I thought they made a mountain of a mole hill. However touching an official in any form should be frowned upon, even putting your arm around their shoulders as players do. To be honest the "high five" warrented a 3 month ban from the day it happened and a $10,000 fine and finished. but this latest manouver just takes the p.iss out of FFA and how they handle, especially after the "Nutcracker" on the linesman and Joel Griffith getting away with that one. two incidences that should have been dealt with properly and the FFA have shot themselves in the foot.

I could not agree more .......... and as a mate said to me about a month ago. Its not only the players, coaches and clubs that need to learn how to be professional ............ the FFA is also on a steep learning curve and so far the jury is still out on day to day management of issues like you raised in your post.

The FFA have cocked this up.
Splitting the ban just makes them a laughing stock. Sure the original ban was a bit too extreme but they should have stuck with it once they had made their decision.

I still think there is a lack of professionalism with players attitudes to referees. It annoys the hell out of me when players charge up to a ref and start mouthing off!!!  It never changes their decision....why do it?

If you touch an official...should be an instant 6 month ban, no appeals. Maybe players would think twice about it if they new it was an instant ban. Players like nutcracker should have beeen cited  for touching an official even if it was actioned during the game. Ban the bastard!!!!

I assume YF knows the Mariners formed a relationship with Sheffield United ........... a bloke from United posted this on our Danny thread .......... no idea if its true or not. But if it is talk about loop holes in international rules.

Remember this is nothing offical ............ and coming from Sheffield ........ so no Aussie input inti the post.

Hi guys, Sheffield United fan here, just joined your board to add a message (see my thread under general Mariner discussion board) for all Mariners fans regarding our link-up with your club (thanks for your replies!).

Heard about Vukovic in the press over hear but not realised he played for the Mariners! Was it a proper punch he gave the ref then? or just a cheeky slap?

Heard rumour that he may be heading to Sheffield to keep fit until his ban has finished - like that idea as we could do with some good competition for Paddy Kenny!  Also seen rumours on here about a swap between PK and DV - sorry don't see that happening im afraid - Paddy is a legend at the Lane (Bramall Lane), and our No.1 Goalkeeper, but i'm liking the idea of exchange of players where its beneficial for both parties!! Maybe Carney will head back to AUS in the summer to find some form? I could possibly imagine our young GK, Jamie Annerson heading to you - meant to be a really good youngster who just needs experience (but plays for England U20's i think!).

Looking forward to our partnership bringing some good results in the next few years, don't be surprised to see some of our young talent heading your way soon!!

UP THE BLADES & GOOD LUCK MARINERS

Danny has been called to the Olyroo training camp.

http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,23599968-23215,00.html

Vukovic named in Olyroos squad

April 26, 2008 REPRIEVED Central Coast Mariners goalkeeper Danny Vukovic has been selected in Graham Arnold's 17-man Olyroos squad for a pre-Beijing training camp in Townsville next week.

While he won't be eligible to play until after July 28, Vukovic will rejoin the Australian under-23 squad for the eight-day camp from Thursday after having his nine-month ban for striking a referee amended so he can take part in the Beijing Olympics.

Arnold has also named Perth Glory custodian Tando Velaphi, who impressed in the Olyroos' 1-1 draw with Mexico last month, so Vukovic is no certainty to line up for Australia, despite having played in all 14 Olympic qualifiers.

Shortly after the eight-day camp in North Queensland, the Olyroos will travel to Malaysia to compete at the intercontinental under-23 football championship against fellow Olympic participants Argentina and Nigeria, along with Croatia, Ghana, Iraq, Ireland and Malaysia.

Vukovic will be unavailable for the warm-up tournament as well as several other friendlies and will not be able to play until Australia's first Olympic match against Serbia in Shanghai on August 7, if selected.

The 23-year-old's extended on-field absence could provide an opportunity for Velaphi to impress coach Arnold, who said the Townsville camp would be the last chance for some squad members to shine.

For some players, it will be the last opportunity to make a claim for a place in the final squad that will be selected to compete at the Olympics, Arnold said.

The Townsville training venue was selected by Arnold because of the similarity in climate to Malaysia and also to simulate the conditions the team will experience in Beijing in August.

We are expecting the conditions in Malaysia and China to be around 30 degrees with 80 per cent humidity, said Arnold.

Currently the Townsville climate is very similar to those conditions and it will give the players an opportunity to acclimatise and prepare themselves for the next three months leading into the Olympic Games.

With the exception of the Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United players, most of the players are just returning from their post A-League season break and a camp like this is important for them to re-establish match fitness and focus.

it should have absolutely diddly squat to do with equity. the punishment should be purely about the crime, in my opinion it should have nothing to do with what hell miss out on. equity, really! ahhhhhhhh australians

Interesting post below on Danny from the SBS blogg

I am a big fan of Danny as well. However, he stuffed up. So did the FFA. So did the original displinary board. The appeal board was handed something that shouldn't have eventuated.

Danny hit the ref. Red Card.

FFA set punishment different to FIFA.
FFA set punishment without allowing Vukovic the chance to be represented. (This meant case would be thrown out if it went to CAS).
FFA gave 15 month ban when their minimum was 12 and FIFAs was 6.

Disciplinary board made no real difference on appeal.

Appeals committee got creative when they realised that if it went to CAS and would be thrown out.

Only one with any credit is Lyall Gorman and the Mariners board. They supported the player and copped the final result for the good of the game when the advice was it would be thrown out by CAS. The advice was recieved from Bob Ellicott - Danny's lawyer and himself a CAS Arbitrator

Is there a link on youtube or somewhere to the incident? Not allowing someone to be represented and throwing a 15 month ban at them is rediculous.

Cheers guys. Pretty childish but that's about it. Feel sorry for Vukovic, 15 months for that is unbelievable. Yes Grifiths was just a little bit worse.

LOL Definitely 6 month ban with a one month reduction on an equity appeal for olympic consideration. The FFA does look a bit to inflexible. Mind you they are still a bit fresh as football adminstration compare to others.

In comparison to the Nutcracker.

I love the way the linesman doesn't even bat an eyelid except to raise his flag when JG gives him the nudge in his sacks.

Imagine if that was a certain Brazilian keeper! He'd be down and out for the count..

Maybe he has none?

I thought that was a pre-requisite of the job. Thats why they were trialling female assistant refs last season, to save on surgery costs.

If Griffths has done that to Miss Ho, his hand might have got stuck! That clip comparing the two is the perfect example of how bad a decision they made on each case!
