Mustn't want to be shown up by the football crowd on Sunday again.
Noticed an advert in the Dom that Wellington Rugby are offering 2
for 1 tickets for the game this weekend (certain section of the

Fantastic. Didn't read the the ad myself. I guess you will always have your hard rugby fans that will go to game. Maybe the fence-sitters who just go to sporting events for entertainment and shifting to football matches. Yeah!!!
The anti rugby sentiment is rather sad, i'm a season ticket holder
to both the lions and the nix
andenjoy both, rugby is
the number one game in this country, the sooner followers of
league, football and othe sports accept that and get over it the
better, support your game by all
means,it doesn't mean
yousl*g off rival
codes. can't we all just get along?...ha ha ha...
Thank you, rugby supporters dont bitch and moan about football all the time, so why should you guys keep making pointless threads saying that Wellington Rugby "is running scared", when in all honesty they are the more sucsessfull of the two, simply because they have been around longer. The Phoenix can't go saying they are better than the lions after one home game.
The ugby-driven media sure as hell have digs at soccer though...
I 'm a Phoenix supporter currently in France(not for the rugby)
Don't believe that crap about the French switching support from
football to rugby. They have done a number of street polls in the
national papers here and the majority of respondents either don't
know or care about the rugby world cup. There is almost no world
cup buzz here.

If they're making the offer through Ticketek then they'll be lucky to get them.

Lucky for them I think I saw Ticketmaster. Last week they gave free tickets to College rugby players so they are really trying to get bigger crowds.

several of them have already stated in the media they'll be asking for autographs etc...poor ol Zidane will be thinking "Why do my sponsors have me meet these randoms from a little island?...ahwell, i get paid..."

I wasn't rugby bashing, I just found it strange that in a rugby obsessed town they felt the need to offer 2-4-1 tickets for a game, and thought there might be a coincidence that the last weekend the Lions and Phoenix were at home, Phoenix had twice the crowd Lions had.
To tell the truth I think the biggest obstacle to getting people through the gates for rugby in the next month is certainly not the Phoenix, but the RWC. It'll be hard to motivate yourself to go and watch a Wellington game when there's a AB's game on the telly that night.
I've played rugby in my time, and I'm a half arsed rugby fan (although I've really been all rugby'd out since the Lions tour), so I certainly have time for both codes.
You have to understand New Zealand is a rugby nation, you cant just think after two Phoenix games that the whole nation is going to be football crazy, since the Phoenix is based in Wellington not NZ wide.
Though even Fabian Barthez wanted to be a rugby player* (maybe not but his father played test ). I like French football highlights. However if 98 had been a Rugby Cup the football should never take off in France. Even the final was viewed by spectators Not Supporters ! than came the hype...
I am afraid Frogs will win this Cup too, on our expense, given only SA needs to be beaten at semi...somehow just all fits (first ever nz-fra final here) as the form does not matter in finals imo.

...or why did the Lions forward pack turn up to train on Waitangi
Park the other week next to the Fever vs Tards game ? Not a
publically announced appearance, for only about 15 minutes, 3 hours
before a match...

Not many people [yet] know that to re-educate this
mighty sporting nation, a watershed is occurring in the
Capital. Wellington is now adding this new, but well loved GLOBAL
game of football to its portfolio of well attended patrons. The
quieter that this revolution gets underway, the better. For too
long, the sporting public [particularly in Wellington] have been
deprived of a REAL code, which could explain why the NZRFU
[contemptuously!] set up its operational HQ [albeit at a very
cheap rental!!] right next door to the finest stadium in the
country. It is now incumbent upon us to seize this brilliant
opportunity, particualrly whilst the cat is away [on
yet another boring world cup duty], and bury any more myths
about this beautiful game of FOOTBALL.
Let me tell you this, my dad Greg Peters is CEO of Wellington
Rugby, and he is not worried about the Phoenix at all and thinks
its all good competition.
Shame did u enjoy accounting test harry?
No, lol straight failed.
haha guttard 4 u then u should have copied stew
Hi Harry,
Could you be considering converting to some real action, and
getting into the home party atmosphere actively
What? I'm not Wellington supporter, but I do like rugby. Wellington
play sh*t rugby and thats why the atmosphere is sh*t at their
games, I support Waikato and they have great atmosphere at their
games, with the cow bells and everything.
Wellington Phoenix > Wellington Lions anyday.

in saying that the way the lions pack is playing at the moment
a hard man like aloisi wouldn't go astray

The ugby-driven media sure as hell have digs at soccer though...
How about 3 news just now with their sports headlines...1st
headline: How ABs preparing for the world cup. 2nd Headline: "And
how French locals have put aside soccer and adopted rugby".
But yeah, at the sametime, I'm against any sort of
rugby-bashing, because it wont go down well, and isnt really
neccesary..
They've spent an awful lot of money to get the rights. It's
hardly surprising they hype it like that though is it ?
The French locals spin as well...

I heard the other day that Zidane is going to meet the All

photos?

Ok 3000 turned up to see the AB's in Marseille, but that same
day 55,000 were at the local stadium watching Olympic Marseille
play. There are over 2 million registered football players in
France wich is more than the total number of rugby players on the
planet. TV3 is just trying to hype it up in NZ. Believe me football
is still totally dominant in France

TV3 paid a massive ransom for the Cup TV rights - so they are
going certainly going to hype it up as much as they can.
Apparently, France play Italy in a world cup qualifier the
same day the All Blacks play Italy in first RWC cup game. I dont
think TV3 will send anyone to interview the Romans about the All
Blacks that day.

i think this may be due to the sell out at the league and not
because the phoenix had 15k last home game, maybe when the nix get
22-25 k they will worry

Yeah apparently theyve been giving out tickets to all the junior
players, and no one has wanted them
Anyways, enough rugby bashing, as fun as it is.
their low crowds will be due to no all blacks playing, also the
game has become ridiculously "soft" and too many whistles. trust me
when we loose to south africa in the rugWC rugby will die here,
slowly but surly
If we win, the country will go rugby mad though.
This is a crucial world cup as far as its popularity in this
country goes.

I'm lost

if i ever meet zidane i will get a photo of him headbuting me,
he'll probably do it out of anger.
its so annoying how the news wanks over the ABS, they will
choke.
i think the lions/rugby in general will get smaller crowds due
to the rwc

with the media angle about a new game in town, bigger crowd than
npc, i think it is a response to the football more than the league,
not too many 'Lie-ins' fans will be drawn to attending
warriors games next season, the Nix though that's a different story
altogether imo

I agree with Tegal, if the All Blacks lose rugby will die! (crack
out in an evil laugh)
Seeing that Helen Clark had to tell the country not to go in to recession after the last world cup shows that it takes rugby faaaaar to seriously. Other footy loving countries, such as Italy, Spain, England etc, all get upset at being knocked out but NOT TO THAT EXTENT!
I hope the All Blacks lose so I don't have to have rugby players lauding it over me and that rugby can finally die in this country....well, for a while at least.

Rugby will NEVER die in NZ. 100 years of history is impossible to
ignore. Football for all its current resurgence has a well
ingrained stigma (re: pooftah comments et al) attached. 1982 was a
peek in popularity nationally and then a steady decline. The
opportunity is for the Phoenix and its supporters to take the
current peak and maintain it. A solid fan base is easier to build
on, than a brief moment in the spotlight.
