Mods could not find this else where if it is then just add my comment ... For the love of Mary this cannot surely not ... be  true....

Bungle ruins Moss' dream

28 September 2009 | 16:13 - SBS EXCLUSIVE: Philip Micallef

A bureaucratic bungle has robbed Melbourne Victorys New Zealand goalkeeper Glenn Moss of the chance to help his country reach the 2010 World Cup.

Moss, 26, was sent off in a World Cup qualifying dead rubber against Fiji in Lautoka last November for abusive language towards the referee and was given a maximum four-match suspension by FIFA.

The goalkeeper will miss New Zealands two playoff matches against Bahrain in October and November and should the Kiwis reach the finals in South Africa he would also be banned from the first two group matches.

Moss wanted to appeal against the harsh ban but New Zealand Football were late with the appeal and it was rejected by FIFA.

The red card was my fault and a silly thing to do but Im just very disappointed with the way New Zealand Football handled the whole thing, Moss said.

They received notification from FIFA that I was suspended for four games and did not even contact me for a start. I had to find out the outcome of my red card from the New Zealand Professional Footballers Association.

New Zealand Football had enough time to lodge their appeal but they missed the FIFA deadline and when they sent it over it even lacked some basic elements.

I then wanted to lodge my own appeal but unfortunately FIFA does not allow players to undertake such actions on their own. They have to come through their respective associations.

FIFA were on my side but they obviously have to stick with the rules. They said they were surprised by New Zealands lack of action and they could feel for me but there was nothing they could do to help me.

It was unbelievable. Now Im missing the two most important games in New Zealands recent history and perhaps two matches in the World Cup proper.

Imagine if something similar happening to Mark Schwarzer. And can you imagine the English or French FAs not lodging an appeal over, say, Beckham or Zidane in time!

NZF chief executive Michael Glading said the unfortunate mistake took place due to a combination of events.

We never received the original fax from FIFA and we eventually got it on December 23 just before we shut down for our Christmas holidays, Glading said.

Moss made a similar comment to this when interviewed on the Phoenix hour prior to the Melbourne-Nix game, without explaining. I wondered what he meant at the time.

Thanks for clearing that up.

As for the future of football in NZ- is there any point is the AWs getting to the World Cup, if this sort of foot-shooting administration is continuing, 27 years after the last missed opportunity?

This is very sad. When was the FIFA deadline? Did no one see the fax until the new year?

Next time players would have to badger their associations who then has to badger FIFA for the original fax so that they can get things done in time.

I wonder if it is wise not to have a game in November because of the processing delays in FIFA and the association.

But how tragic is all that. Seriously bad stuff.

There is certainty a need to streamline certain operating procedures at the NZF.

This was a good story back in January, its old hat now. Dont know why they are digging it back up.
Also there is no guarantee that Moss would have been the starting keeper anyway.

I had heard rumours, and this confirms it.
We never received the original fax from FIFA and we eventually got it on December 23 just before we shut down for our Christmas holidays, Glading said.

Thats just ridiculous.  - "Sorry Glen, I know you'd love to play in the World Cup, but i'm heading up to the beach tonight for Christmas and want to beat the traffic, so you're just going to have to shelve your dreams and not be so damn selfish about it.  Oh, Merry Christmas"

Yeah that really is a piss poor answer from Mr. Glading.  At least Setts would have made sure Glen had been taken care of.  I really don't like this current NZF administration, too much of an '82 old boys club for me.

Well even then, who in the FIFA administration care enough to be waiting for our reply during the Xmas and New Years holiday? The chances are that they would be boozing up as well.

Honestly, it is FIFA balls up as well.

Why does FIFA never sends the original fax to NZF on time anymore? And then on request sends a fax so late in the year before Xmas?? The communication between NZF and FIFA are alway crappy since old Charlie   retired and passed away (RIP).

It's still a mixed bag at the NZF administration, they starting to get the books right then this comes up.

FIFA or NZF?  I know whose word I'd take for it.

And Mossy got slapped with a $10k fine too, but NZF were so embarrassed that they paid it.  Good use of resources lads.

One thing we shouldn't forget here is that Mossy should probably have just STFU in the first place.  An Island ref is the last person you need to give an excuse to hit you with the banstick.

What amazes me is that NZFA did not know the procedure before the FAX.... I sit on my local park club committee .... each year we advise all coaches of what they have to do in the event of a player being sent off ... the appeal process should they wish to appeal... We also have it posted on our web site ... and we discuss each year to see if it has changed in any way....

We are a local park club with 400 players ..... if we make it our business to understand the rules .... how can a national association ... not understand what they have to do ... for heaven sake  ..... it makes NZF look like ....... ERRrrrrrrrrrrr FOOK ...... just plain dumb with no F****** idea how the world game works....

What about the player ... this is a once in a lifetime chance to play in the WC and be seen by the Worlds best clubs as well.... and a once in a generation chance for NZ as a whole and not to understand the FIFA player appeal process .....

For the love of Mary ... they even had the perfect example when Danny V hit Shield after the grand final ... The Mariners showed the whole FIFA appeal process  to get Danny in the U 23 squad....

Someone's head should roll... or more than one.... how the heavens can a national body not understand something as simple as the appeal process ... as I said our local park club understands it .....

Geeze, that's terrible.....

Though, what were the grounds of the appeal? How likely would it have been to work? Doesn't justify the stuff up at all, but interested if it actually would have been successful anyway? (of course Moss is going to make it seem that way...).

I think whether or not the appeal would have been successful is not the question... that you pull out all stops in a WCQ for a place in the WC is beyond question... given NZF appear not to have known the policy on send offs and appeals is beyond belief ... That a FIFA letter about a player arrives by fax on your last day before the break and the person who reads it does not understand the importance of it ... beggers disbelief ....

IMO for the good of the game in NZ some of the NIX adm staff should take over the running of NZF untill football wise folk can be put in place ... This is not a minnor adm error ... this is a major stuff up ....

It sucks they didn't appeal.

But

the penalty handed out was complete bullsh*t in the first place.
secondly this is Aussies beating up on Kiwis now Moss is their man. They didn't give a flying f* about the banana republic competition and environment we play in.

and was Moss on the phone about it? Making sure?

but. VERY VERY poor from NZFA.

I find it appaling that NZF aren't giving this serious attention -  I know that there isn't a lot that can be done now but this is amatuer hour, and someone should be in front of the media paying penance for what is an enormous mistake.

What is just as galling is the appalling decision of the OFC in the first place.  It's just an absolutely atrocious decision that again shows the absolute amateur goings on in the OFC - firstly that he got the red card in the first place (referees in these games need to understand what players in professional leagues expect and referee to those standards and not act like children) and then the disgraceful decision to ban him for 4 matches for what is clearly a one match offence.

In fact, in my mind that makes the NZF inaction worse - this is clearly such a bad decision and one that would always be overturned on appeal that they should have been knocking on the door to get it sorted and not waiting for them to contact us.

All in all an absolute cock up that CANNOT BE REPEATED!  Worst part is that Glenn Moss could miss the WC, a genuine once in a lifetime opp, because of administrative error.

Don't forget this is the same NZF administration that took Roddy Brown (an attacking midfielder) to the U20 World Cup as our third goalkeeper thinking they could use him in the outfield before discovering when they got there that the rules specifically prohibited that.  So poor Roddy sat on the bench for the entire campaign, missing the opportunity to kick start a career in the game by playing on that stage.

Dont like or agree with the suspension but come on JD are you seriously suggesting that just because he is a professional its okay for him to give a gobful to an offical.Thats part of the problem here that its become an accepted part of the game. When really it shouldnt be allowed at all and it dosnt matter if its a supposed proffesional competion or the lower divs in Wellington.

Yes NZ football dropped the ball big time, what i dont get is why neither the coach or Mossy were eager to find out what his penalty was and put the appeal processes in place or make sure it was being handled properly. You would have thought they would both have been anxious to know what further penalty had been imposed.

Umm, think you've missed two key points here ballane:

1. The whole issue about the suspension is that it was manifestly in excess of what you would expect elsewhere in the world.  Nobody is suggesting there should be no penalty, but when is the last time you heard of any professional anywhere in the universe getting 4 matches for some sharp language?  Never.  So its ridiculous.

2. This is neither Mossy's or Ricki's fault.  Both have full time jobs of their own.  Neither is able to mount an appeal under FIFA rules.  Why should they have to chase NZF and make sure they do their part of the job?

This is cut and dried, unless there is information not provided, and NZF have bollocksed it big time.

Michael Glading, who are ya?

Havnt missed them at all Smithy which is why i opened with" Dont like or agree with the suspension".The comment about Ricki and Mossy was simply from the perspective that if it was me i would want to know what other sanctions had been placed on my player or myself.

Just maybe thats the problem Smithy they can gob off and know they wont cop anything, but hey thats a whole new discussion. As i said dont think i missed the key points just we look at it from different views.

And what good would that have done?

Moss: So what's the suspension gonna be?

NZF: Erm, we're not sure. Looks like 4 games maybe...

Moss: What? Can you do something about this?

NZF: We'd love to, but it's almost Christmas and we're in the wind down mode...will check it out later...

The worst thing is that this issue will just be forgotten about and yet again, no one will be held accountable.

Just reinforces my view that there is no future for the development of the game in this country.

Bitterly disappointing.

I tend to assume the worst with New Zealand Football.

So far, they haven't given me (or many others) reason to think otherwise.

Edit: After posting this, I went to the NZ Football website and have seen they are advertising for a New Zealand Futsal Development Manager. A step in the right direction, in my eyes anyway.
