CT mentioned John Lydon, right on geezer.
I was recently aurally molested by some phone surveyer. One of his questions was who were three people I looked up to. I said JFK, John Lydon and Robert Wadlow.

In no particular order:

Jesus - Even if you don't believe the Son of God/Prohpet stuff he still started one of the worlds major religions.
Mohammed - Ditto
Hitler - Basically changed Europe. Started WW2.
Churchill - Stopped Hitler.
Shakespeare - Created half our language.
Martin Luther King - Changed America. Gandi and Mandela amongst others could be on this list for similar things.
Alexander the great - Took the idea of Democracy to the world.
Einstein - He was a genius, nuff said.
William Wilberforce - Stopped slavery.
Bell - Invented stuff.

I don't want to critcise anyone's list because of their highly subjective nature, but if you think that

a) Churchill stoppd Hitler
b) Alexander the Great brought democracy to the world
c) William Wilberforce stopped slavery

I suggest you brush up on your history a bit.

Also, why include Jesus and Mohamed in the list, and not Buddha for example?

Yea your right. Buddha amongst others could be on the list.

a) Churchill along with the yanks stopped Hitler, ok it wasn't him on his own but he was certainly apart of it.

b) I just wikied and I was wrong! (Wiki knows all)

c) He was the major reason the legal slave trade was stopped in the British Empire.

As for stopping Hitler, the really crucial role in that was played by the Ruskies. In the West we get fed the D-Day line and Churchill's version of WW 2, partly because for a long time it was difficult to access Russian sources and analyse their role in stopping Hitler's war machine, and partly because it wasn't popular to recognise the Ruskies' role because of the Cold War. We get told about D-day, but how many hear of Operation Bagration? Began on 22 June 1944, and lasted about 7 weeks. German lossess were about 670,000 (including 300,000 dead) in just under two months. 9 German generals were killed, and this was the worst defeat the Germans suffered in WW2. Not to mention the 20 divisions they had lost at Stalingrad the previous year. Yes, the Yanks and Brits helped the Ruskies materially and quickened the end of war in Europe with D-day, but it was the Ruskies who broke Hitler's back, and who would have defeated him anyway, with or without Allied help.

As for Wilberforce, you're right - he led the crusade to stop the slave trade, but slavery continued in the Americas (most notably US and Brazil) until the 1860s, well after Wilberforce was dead and buried. Denmark was in fact the first country to outlaw the slave trade, but obviously they had little means on doing much about it. Ultimately, it's difficult to credit one person with 'stopping the slavery', but I guess for me the most symbolic figure in that respect is Lincoln. But obviously Wilberforce deserves credit too.

so of all time, throughout the history of mankind you have that many from the 19th century? no roman emperors? i'd argue they had a larger impact on the world than martin luther king did. hitler started a war that changed the world but so have many more before him.

As said eariler it's subjective.
In my list I included the guy who invented the clock. Splitting the day into measurable chunks hugely changed the way we function. I'd guess most of us never consider what a difference that's made.
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

you can always question someones subjectivity though. see i think your list is a bit more thought out and has some hugely influential figures, (to name hitler and churchill and leave out hippocrates is ridiculous really) and also some i've never heard of (wikipedia'd the lot of them, all interesting characters!).

your boy didnt invent the clock though. sundials have been around since ancient times, followed by water clocks and the rest of it. henlien (arguably) invented the watch which is pretty decent of him, but not as influential as changing the way we function i wouldnt think.

Right on HH. I really feel dirty now for writing that. Won't edit it, so it can shame me for all time (or at least until this forum is around). Slavery is indeed alive and well in many parts of the world, and is an evil that we all should be more alert to and denounce it at every opprtunity we get. Particularly nasty is trade in young women and children for sex trafficking. Abhorrent.

I do stand by my comments about Ruskies in WW2 though.

They did in a way, but given Hitler's ideology, that was always going to happen.
War between Nazi Germany and USSR was inevitable. The Germans made a mistake of invading too early, but everyone underestimated the Ruskies military capability and willingness to fight. So Germans screwed up, but Ruskies deserve an enormous amount of credit for surviving the initial onslaught, and then brutally counter-attacking.

I love this thread, I'm learning a pile from reading it.
Yes, a list of Ten Most Important Women would be interesting. I'm thinking the likes of Joan of Arc, Rosa Parks, Queen Victoria, Mary Magdalene (whoops, no religion, sorry) Mother Theresa, Catherine the Great, Cleopatra, Ameila Earhart, Maria Montessori, Eleanor Roosevelt?

Oh, and Karen Olsen, who changes my world whenever she forecasts a warm front coming my way...

I've been in parts of the Sahara where chattel slavery still exists. I know of one village where there is still a regular(ish) slave market. The oddest moment though was turning up at a friend's camp. There was a guy there who I assumed was part of the family/camp. But no he's their slave. Weird/unsettling setup. Slavery was outlawed but that's only where the rule of law reaches. Clearly hundreds of kilometres from anywhere that reach isn't so strong.

Bang on there News. The only person that stopped Hitler was Hitler. The list of his mistakes is long and notable (this isn't exhaustive, just what I can think of in a couple of minutes and I'll just skip over invading Russia since it's already mentioned):
- The postponement (and eventual cancellation) of operation Sealion until the Luftwaffe achieved air superiority when the British were on their knees
- the change of focus from bombing British airfields to bombing cities
- his refusal to take the most direct route to Moscow because that was the route that Napolean had taken - resulted in the failure to take Moscow before winter '41 (especially after the invasion began at least a month late)
- His shift in focus in '42 from taking Moscow to heading East for Stalingrad
- His obsession with Stalingrad because it bore his enemies name. It had no real strategic value
- Letting Mussolini suck him into sending troops to Nth Africa
- His steadfast belief that the Allied landings would come at the Pas de Calais so even a week after D-Day refused to send reinforcements to Normandy
- and the big one for me that really spelled the end: after the Japs bombed Pearl Harbour, despite the fact that they were supposed to invade Russia from the East, he declared war on America which brought them into the war in Europe
