Would be interested in seeing who people thought were the 10 most important people of all time.

In no particular order:

Jesus
Mohammed
Hitler
Churchill
Shakespeare
Martin Luther King
Alexander the great

my thoughts in bold below

Jesus - fictional character.  Might as well have put Scooby Do.
Mohammed - why is a boxer in your list of all time most important people?????
Hitler - Charlie Chaplin should be here instead as he had the mo idea first.
Churchill - the dog (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xv0SvfHgj4k&feature=related)????????  Ohhhhhhh yes
Shakespeare - I prefered his sister.
Martin Luther King - spent more time dreaming than actually doing.
Alexander the great - William the Conqueror invented a game.
Einstein - great hair.  Should be here for that alone.
William Wilberforce - not as good as Charlie from Groundforce.
Bell - clock.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

Well i'm ready to take this seriously if no-one else is. Now, quite clearly people with differing theological standpoints will think otherwise, but I would rather keep religion out of it.
I regard the great explorers to be amongst Planet Earth's most significant citizens. Sure, if they hadn't got there others would, but it takes a whole lot of guts and perseverance to set out in a boat not knowing where you are going, or indeed if there is actually anywhere to go to. Henceforth, forthwith, in no particular order...
Marco Polo
Christopher Columbus
Ferdinand Magellan
Vasco da Gama
Captain James Cook
David Livingstone
I'd round these explorers off with the following;
Nelson Mandela
William Shakespeare
John F Kennedy (a personal preference admittedly)
Neil Armstrong (ditto)

I know most of this list is horribly Eurocentric and that it could be argued that it is more a list of Great Colonisers than of Great Explorers but, as I mentioned, the determination and courage shown by this hardy troupe of souls I feel sets them apart from most.

Benjamin Franklin should be in any top 10 (except the religious/joke inclusive ones)

no order -

Yves Saint Laurent (for pin striped suits and women wearing trousers)
Elton John (he's the f**kin man)
William Shakespeare (for plays, poetry and many glorious words like "bubble")
My Mum (Grade A good c**t)
Alexander Fleming (for inventing penicillin)
Julie Andrews (my hero)
Homer the poet
Leonardo da Vinci (fabulous artwork and inventions)
Helen Clarke (as minister for health, gave midwives right to practise without doctor, yippee!)
Seth McFarlane (for Family Guy)

Lists like this are incredibly subjective...but here's my list, at least for the Western world:

Johannes Gutenberg
Bill Gates
Isaac Newton
Albert Einstein
Abraham Lincoln
Constantine
William Shakespeare
Ho Chi Minh
Christopher Columbus
John Lennon

Lincoln is a good call, as was Franklin (mentioned earlier) and Gutenberg. So would be people like Alexander Bell and Guglielmo Marconi.
But Bill Gates? Splutter.....cough....choke
Such a subjective list all right. How about Karl Marx, Robert Peel, even John Nash or Ernest Rutherford? If you are talking about people who have changed the world, then these four should probably be there too.

Imagine having Julie Andrews as your hero....
Which reminds me, a mate of mine's father regards Chevy Chase as the most important man in history.

Really you could have one list for inventors, one for explorers, one for leaders, one for entertainers that had a huge influence, you could have lists for all these kind of things and try to merge them into one list.
Would be very difficult, i cant really compare a Lincoln to a Ben Franklin or Guttenberg or or Karl Marx. Pretty difficult to do but fun none the less

Figured I may aswell explain my thoughts. I basically thought about people that (for lack of a better word) changed history.

Jesus - Even if you don't believe the Son of God/Prohpet stuff he still started one of the worlds major religions.
Mohammed - Ditto
Hitler - Basically changed Europe. Started WW2.
Churchill - Stopped Hitler.
Shakespeare - Created half our language.
Martin Luther King - Changed America. Gandi and Mandela amongst others could be on this list for similar things.
Alexander the great - Took the idea of Democracy to the world.
Einstein - He was a genius, nuff said.
William Wilberforce - Stopped slavery.
Bell - Invented stuff.

Think what you want, but the personal computer has revolutionised the world. I know Gates can't take the sole credit for it, but he's been able to bring it to the masses that not many thought was possible even only 30 years ago.
Don't want to argue about others, like I said lists like this are highly subjective, and it's also really easy to forget people. Just thought I'd point out why I included Gates.

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

I don't want to critcise anyone's list because of their highly subjective nature, but if you think that

a) Churchill stoppd Hitler
b) Alexander the Great brought democracy to the world
c) William Wilberforce stopped slavery

I suggest you brush up on your history a bit.

Also, why include Jesus and Mohamed in the list, and not Buddha for example?

Yea your right. Buddha amongst others could be on the list.

a) Churchill along with the yanks stopped Hitler, ok it wasn't him on his own but he was certainly apart of it.

b) I just wikied and I was wrong! (Wiki knows all)

c) He was the major reason the legal slave trade was stopped in the British Empire.

Unfortunately he didn't manage to stop it in place that weren't under british control thus most of the Americas practiced slavery for a long time afterwards
