A Kiwi Song For The Rugby World Cup

OK so I agree that the choice of an "anthem" for the Rugby World Cup is a great opportunity to showcase Kiwi music overseas. So why is it that all the options I've heard mentioned so far completely f**king suck and the only thing they have to say to the world is that we have no good ideas of our own and basically we just want to sound like everybody else?

So...

F*ck The Feelers (Matchbox 20 wannabes)

F*ck Shihad (Nickleback wannabes)

and

F*ck Fat Freddy's Drop (Spinal Tap doing Jazz Odyssey over hip hop beats).

If you want an anthem that presents an honest picture of New Zealand and how we make our way in the world then look no further than this - The Skeptics - AFFCO. "We pack meat" indeed!

Feel free to post your own suggestions...

Haven't Shihad have been around longer than Nickleback, over 20 years. They are one of the best acts to come out of Wellington.

Don McGlashan should write one

Shihad's career

At least they used to be Killing Joke wannabes. Now they are Nickelback wannabes.

Shihad's "Run" would have been awesome.

Terminator, you're being too hard on them.
And you've forgotten the era when they sounded like Bailter Space - the 'Churn' album.

No, he hasn't.  Stations is a Faith No More rip-off and most of the album was tinged with a Killing Joke sound due to Jaz Coleman twiddling knobs.

Weird how No Idea were actually from Levin.

Shihad are derivative rubbish, and the feelers sound like a Pub covers band playing songs you've never heard of.  In fact this soft rock rubbish as a genre is absolutely appalling.

"This was a private show, other bands on the bill included The Clean, Tall Dwarfs, Nocturnal Projections and This Sporting Life."

Sounds like fun.

Shihad to do a cover of The Muppet Show theme. Very appropriate song for rugby and The All Blacks.

probably 20 years on now but "Deb's Night Out" is class.
easily a high water mark for Shihad.

if we are in the business of hiring a song-writer I vote Shayne Carter
more class than ass and any cat that cites Miles-Monk-Coltrane and then releases "You got to hear the Music" is bang to rights way the f*** cool

If you want to talk about good NZ bands, you really have to talk about Mandarin Speakeasy.  They were a band that was so alternative they never played a gig.  I have all the notes they made about songlists that they would play if they ever sold out enough to have any songs.

My music knowledge > all of youse music knowldege put together.

PS I also like the Exponents, Miley Cyrus and "For today, I remember your smile..."

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

Whatever the song is, and whoever plays it, it's still going to be some patriotic wankfest dreamt up in a boardroom by someone with no greater goal than to inspire unity, world peace, siezing the moment and living the dream in the most insipid, vomit-inducing fashion possible.

Theme songs for sporting events are pants, and always will be.

Fact.

F**k yeah!

People like you need people like me to sort you out.

And yes, I could go for some Flying Nun on this. At least that was a distinctly New Zealand sound (at the time) on an independent New Zealand label (as it was).

Or how about this? Upper Hutt Posse - Tangata Whenua. Is that Kiwi enough for ya?

I'm still really feeling AFFCO though...
