Another death caused by a boy racer

Yet another tragic death in Christchurch, caused by a boy racer.

A woman and her two children were walking on the footpath with
her two sons aged four and six.

According to witnesses, a boy race started to do drifts in
peak hour traffic and in wet conditions, he lost control
of his modified car, went up on the footpath and struck
both boys. The four year old died at the scene and the
six year old is in a serious condition in hospital.

What can one say? Its heart wrenching and thoughts have to
go out to the family.

I just hope people in chch, start to take this issue seriously.

I tried to imagine how I'd feel if that happened to me, but it was too much. Horrible.

I propose that the police, ambos and fire brigade should be able to reserve the right not to assist boy racers who f**k themselves up due to speed and booze. Just leave them to sort themselves out.

A truely disgusting thing to have happened. I hope the boy racer gets what he deserves.

I feel terrible for the family and know there is a boy racer problem but I also think the govt and councils shd realise its about time they start contributing facilities to guys into cars the same way they provide sports fields etc. You guys are all busy critiscing but imagine if there was no where for you to indulge the thing you love to do

Boy racers get a bad rep and sure in some cases they deserve it but the great majority of guys into performance cars work really hard and pay taxes just like the rest of us. I met a guy who was 23 and had already spent $20000 on his car just in mods and had worked 60 hr weeks for 4-5 years to fuel his passion

In the states esp in places like LA they except that some people like to drive fast and slowly they have come to the party and they put on street drags in a structured environment

and yes I might be a chick but I totally own up to never sticking to the speed limit

Which is what? I had a friend from high school killed crossing the road after a party on a 50kmh road, and was hit by a boy racer, racing, doing 100kmh. The guy only got 2 years manslaughter.

Although that happened in CHCH it is an issue for the whole country to take up and have some conversations about how we deal with this.

yeah well ffs to this too and to you KP - why shd ambos paid for by everyone's tax dollars fix up sporting injuries where people choose to take the risk of getting hurt. not every drunk driver is a boy racer so should they too be left to die on the side of the road - well personally I have something against anyone who willingly drink drives or is stoned behind the wheel so yes

and what about those who speed who aren't drunk or on drugs. i'm sure you've never driven a km over the limit in your life with your holier than tho attitude

Holier than thou? Because I don't speed and don't appreciate drivers that do? Sorry, just call me St KP then, because I'm sick to death of drink drivers, speedsters, whatever. It's a f**king road, not a playground.

Why do you speed? Why? You've seen the same stories I have, heard ALL the overwhelming evidence that links speed to road trauma, so why ignore it? I'm really interested in why you'd hear all that and still go "y'know what? I think I'll still go over the speed limit, and f**k all the do-gooders and holier than thou nay sayers who want to stop me".

And comparing sports injuries on a plying field to out of control hotted up cars on a public road? Are you serious?

why do diff countries have diff speed limits. why is it 110 in oz and 100 in nz & 130 in Germany? which country is right? I have a high performance car that is serviced more up to date than many peoples and I know how to drive it. I've had exactly one camera ticket and one cop ticket in my entire driving career. & never had an accident caused by me

I'm a safe driver. I always leave a big gap simply because I know my cars acceleration leaves most for dead and takes a bit more to haul back if someone stops suddenly in front of me. Why are we all penalized because some people are crap drivers and drive stupid cars with no power. why is Ngauranga gorge only 80km when my car cruises up it at 120 in fifth without even noticing there is a hill

I like to drive fast. I like to open my car up but like I said there isn't exactly many places you can do that in NZ on a straight - legally

And like I've already said I have zero sympathy for anyone who drink/drug drives but I'm not the one saying deny medical attention to one group who has willingly put themselves in a position to need it

Not one person involved in a speed related accident ever thought they were a sh*t driver. Not one.

And I said they should be able to reserve the right, meaning they would have a choice. I'm sure none of them would ever execute that right.

I had a car totalled and myself injured about 3 years ago and also been rear ended 3 other times all by people going under the speed limit but not paying attention. so 4 accidents all caused by others and not one of them involved speed only f**kwits

No argument from me on the fact that there are f**kheads out there. However, if those particular f**kheads had your attitude to speeding, you'd be dead.

I don't think its a game and I'm not a boy/girl racer. i'm just saying why are there boy racers speeding on our roads. why arent there places for them to indulge their passion for speed. the problem has been around for ages and no one offers any solutions because people like you guys bite our heads off if we suggest maybe the answer is a lateral one

and many of the speeding/alcohol incidences in the last cpl of years esp involving high school students havent been by boy racers. a lot of boy racers put so much money into their car they are kind of careful about what they do with it. but narrow minded people tend to stereotype anyone who is young and speeds or does something stupid as being part of the boy racer milieu

no because my attitude to speeding doesn't involve 50 - 80km zones and like i said I leave big gaps

anyway I'm over this discussion. at least i was being honest - the great majority of drivers under 60 speed at some time or another

Friend who is into cars, she does a bit of racing, made the point that some car clubs have offered these guys weekends at places like Manfeild to no avail. For some, not all,  of the "boy racers" the buzz is being seen out and about...
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

From what I've been told its more that Manfield is a track and most racers want to prove their cars rather than their skills so they more need straights
Permalink Permalink

Part of the problem is that a lot of the "boy racers" are not interested in racing on specially prepared race tracks, they do what they do for the thrill of intimidating the police & general public - the thrill of the chase.  So they will stay on the streets.  They don't give a toss about others, only about themselves & now.

I agree there are many dickheads in the racer boy fraternity but again there are also many who are proud of their cars but who feel like they are hated by much of society esp the public and the police. and by a cpl of people's aggressive reactions on here you can understand (or I can) why they feel like society has dismissed them as scum so they might as well do what they want

and to KP I wasn't implying you were dishonest. just stating that I'm honest in admitting yes I speed. many will side against people who do but still drive over the limit themselves. i'm just being upfront

The term "boy racer" is being used pretty liberally here, which isn't very helpful.

I prefer to use the terms "f**kwits" and "not f**kwits".

There are young men (and women) who spend a lot of time and money on their cars who are f**kwits.

There are young men (and women) who spend a lot of time and money on their cars who are not f**kwits.

If it is true that this driver was actually attempting to drift on a public road then he is a major f**kwit.

The problem with a lot of f**kwits is that a performance car is really only an extension of their overall f**kwittedness. If you take their car away or even offer them safe options to use it they will still find other ways to be generally anti-social and put the rest of us at risk. Because they are f**kwits.

I really don't know what the answer is and I feel desperately sorry for this family because losing a young kid like that is just awful.

I agree completly Terminator. As I said in my very first post my heart goes out to the family. In the first report I read it didn't say he was a boy racer just that the drivers car drifted around the corner. Some people esp younger drivers are just not that great behind the wheel either through inexperience, over confidence or just lack of skills or the before mention cause they are a f**kwit. If he is a boy racer then hopefully this accident will make them all sit up and take notice and drive more carefully in future. even if it was just pure driver error I'm sure he will live with this the rest of his life

Number 1. What she said did not warrant that reply.

And Number 2. I know you are still hurting because of what happened to your friend. And I offer my deep condolences. But you aren't the only person in the world to know what its like to lose someone. Sorry, And no offense Nino. But grief should not be in the form of anger.

There is place for them, and they are called car clubs. They sponsor many events at tracks a around the country. But sadly many of these dick heads wouldnt join as that means doing something that has been organised and their cars have to meet certain safety requirements. Half these cars wouldnt be on the road anyway if they took then off them once their fines reached a couple grand.

Think some of you need to distinguish between the true car buff and the dickhead boy racer as there is a FKN big difference.

I wasn't being a dickhead -merely stating there is a bigger picture that needs to be looked at and that we didn't even know if it was a boy racer or just an idiot who can't drive or even if it was just purely an accident. there was no need for EN to attack me that way but since you're on his side make sure you don't ever say hello in person at any YF events or you'll discover what articulate anger is as opposed to both of your immature rantings

and that goes for EN too as I don't believe he is sorry for being abusive at all just sorry that Stefan pulled him up on it

I know a few guys who are real car buffs. They spend hours working on their cars, making them louder, faster and better looking. But only to show them.
One of my mates has spent over 40k doing up his car but only shows it.

But he is branded as a boy racer.

instead of instantly branding anyone who likes cars a dangerous hoodlum/boy racer NZ should be at least providing more things like this

and maybe if there wasn't so much irrational hate aimed at them then car enthusiasts wd be more willing to keep everything legal rather than feel they are being rail roaded

Your argument is flawed SK due to the blatant stupidity and ignorance of most participants in racing on public roads. every raceway in NZ has open days? do they need to be open 24/7 and sell alcohol as these seem common factors in most "boy-racer" accidents

By your logic should the government & councils also provide free brothels to give rapists somewhere to do what it is the feel the need to do?.
Give them somewhere to commit their crimes away from the public?
the problem is as much what they are doing as where.
another problem is cars have a steering wheel and peddles not two thumb-sticks and some shoulder buttons.

My 2 cents.
