I used to ref youth rugby. You know how it is, one teams coach ref's the first half, the other ref's the next :P Did NZRFU training though, Bull Allen helped run it, which made it more awesome for a longtime Hurricanes fan and former Central Vikings supporter!

Central Vikings...I was at the second division final in 1997 when Northland beat them 63-10, it was a brilliant game...well for me anyway!! They were a good rugby team, with some good players like Christian Cullen, Mark Ranby, Bull Allen etc. As far as officiating goes, the odd crack at Umpiring at cricket if there is no one else willing to do it, don't like it at all though. I also think having played a fair amount of the sport involved is crucial, as it allows you to know about the intricacies of the sport and helps when communicating with players especially in sports such as football. Most referees I came across that did not have much of a playing background were useless and just in it for the power trip it gave them...Not all though before I get harassed!!
