Very silly behaviour:

BUT, on Morning Report this morning they interviewed some kids from Auckland Grammar (Not the ones involved) asking there opinion. Most of the kids had not heard about the Holocaust and two of the more stoopid kids said:
"we are living in the 20th Century now and should let by gones be by gones" and then the
stoopedest kid said "Everyones taking the micky out of Hitler"

Yeah i bet Hitler's family are outraged at this latest sleight on his good name!

I thought Ak Grammar was meant to be a top school but then Mrs Salmon pointed out that its for idiots who are good at rugby. If i was an old boy of Grmmar i'd be face palming right about now

Not a good move by those students. What do they learn in history these days anyway other than about the treaty of Waitangi?? Do they not learn about the wars, the cruisades, notable world events such as the Apollo Moon Landings etc??

On the lunchtime news, they saw the cameras and tried to hide, but their teacher marched them through the media scrum, albeit with their jerseys over their faces.

During my 3 years of history we never studied WW2, we studied the origins of it but never did we talk about the holocaust. Can't think of any time at school where we talked specifically about the holocaust I guess it is just something they thought we should know.

+1 We studied it this year in History (Level 1) but we had been taught about the holocaust in years 9 and 10 in Social Studies.

Those guys are ignorant f**kers.

Teachers can choose what they want their students to learn. (At least)One New Zealand topic is compulsory, but there are 2 others that can be chosen out of a list of 10. We did Black Civil Rights, Causes of WWII and NZ defensive arrangements this year but other things could include Womens welfare in NZ, or the problems in Ireland. Russian and Chinese revolutions also available.

So really it is up to the school to decide what they want their students to learn. Nothing outside of NZ is compulsory I don't think.

It is something everybody should already know about and if they don't (with a couple of exceptions) then they fail at life.

We never specifically studied the holocaust either but everybody in the class knew about it.

Well, I've a son in the 6th form at AGS and have only good things to say about it.  Have met some outstanding teachers and parents over the past few years.

Thing to remember is that it is a huge school, 3000 boys.  So your experience kinda depends on who you happen to meet.

Oh and our favourite teacher, who is something of a legend, is near retirement having spent the first half of his career at Wgtn Coll (where he was also a legend I hear).  Reckons the cultures are fairly similar.

As for the goons who did the nazi thing, hope they get whats comin' to them.

Amazing. Yoof of today... it was called WORLD War II (the sequel) for a reason, and the holocaust was one of the reasons why the conflict was justified.

Admittedly it is now part of the last century, but it's probably one of the major events that has laid the foundations for the development of the word as it is these days.

Maybe they should transfer to Auckland History School?? Their grammar must be pretty good by now.

I feel sorry for these boys though. Big bloomin' national uproar for some teenage kids having a laugh like teenage kids do. I remember from school people doing stupid things / having a laugh when serious things were going on. I've heard many bad taste jokes around the office about people who have just died. People do this sort of thing. We are getting to a time now where the Jewish Holocaust a while ago and people forget the social norm that this is one you aren't supposed to touch. If you did a similar mockery of Stalin or Mao (better not say Bush here) then nobody would give a stuff(.co.nz). Oh well, I suppose those kids (and many others watching) will learn that there's some things you can laugh at and some things you can't - even if you can't really see the difference.

Disagree Colv.

When you consider that some of the 6 million people who died in the Holocaust would still be alive today (admittedly in old age) it's not really that long ago.

...and as long as there are revisionists trying to pretend it never happened it is HUGELY important for the intelligent world to make sure it isn't forgotten.

As soon as you choose to forget something like that you leave yourself open to it recurring.

The 6 million that were murdered not only included Jewish people but Polish, Russians, handicapped, homosexuals and pretty much anyone who didn't fit into the profile of being one of the master race. we can never forget.

Wow, studying the black civil rights would be interesting. Malcolm X, Dr Martin Luther King and even Jessie Jackson, The Black Panther movement, Interracial mixing in schools. I know I am showing my age but some of that was happening around me in my youth. The infamous "I have a Dream" speach. Awesome words from and awesome man. he was no angel but he was years ahead of his time. I guess America just wasn't ready for him. Well Redneck America anyway.

Point is that someone like Mao may be responsible for the deaths of 50 million people (in various ways). Now if someone tries to mock him nobody would care. Look, I don't want to get into any debate of who was worse than who. The holocaust was obviously a bit more relevant for NZ than Mao or Pol Pot, but I just think it's all a bit overboard for these kids to be getting hung out to dry nationwide. Dragged out in front of the media like criminals, crying and all that. I bet you it's been more distressful for them than it has for any that they offended.

You're right - it's not that long ago, but these are teenagers. I just meant that, we are at a point now where them or their mates probably don't have any family members who were directly involved, so they probably didn't realise the seriousness of their actions. I don't need told how serious it is/was. Like I knew people involved when I was young so knew it was one thing I shouldn't laugh at. I stuggle to attribute any large amout of guilt to these kids because from what I've read they were pretty much ignorant. Ok, so teach them. Don't punish them.

Well, yes they are just kids and hopefully they do have some awareness of how the "only a bit of fun" approach is only their perspective.

I've always been fascinated by this claim of 50 million for Mao. Never really understood if this was based on failed idealogical policies (Great Leap Forward) or political expediency and power struggle (Cultural Revolution).

Gulags aside I don't think that those 50 mill are in the same vein as systematic extermination of a group of people (and btw Mao and founding of PRC is very relevant to me - but I'm probably an unNZer)

This whole saga might be the reality check these kids needed. I think now, maybe they just might take history a little more seriously and learn from it. It could be the making of them rather than the humiliation.

Then again, when has man ever learned from mistakes from the past?

Lets not forget the Holocaust that happen in the East just prior & during WWII.  Very little is heard about The Rape of Nanking - 1937.  In a 3 month period at the end of 1937, when the old capital of China fell to the Japanese, an estimated 370,000 civilians (children included) were systematically massecred & tortured by various means which made shooting & gasing seem humane.  Also, 10's of 1000's of female some young as 6 & old as 60 were raped then killed.  If you want to read up about it, read the book "The Rape of Nanking - The Forgotten Holocaust"  by Iris Chang.  I've read parts of it in the public library but I found it too upsetting to read the entire book.

I saw a doco which interviewed old Jap soldiers on what happened in China (and indeed other parts of Asia), and some of them went back to the old sites to apologise.  The grunts were conditioned to not think of the local populace as human and that allowed them to commit attorcities without any sense of remorse or morality.

Probably the same that allowed Germans to round up "non-Aryans" and tell them that "work makes free" - Arbeit machts frei or some such (yeah right).

The key difference between these two countries is that post-war the German government acknowledged the attrocities and put in structural and cultural changes to redress them.  The Japs have never fully admitted that their occupation of Asia consisted of a serious of crimes against humanity and indeed have even revised their history books to tone down events.

So today young Japanese are completely surprised at the animosity that other Asian countries feel towards theirs and when they see war museums they are quite blown away by what their great-grandparents were responsible for.
