Dave Meniketti  (that should get you all googling furiously )

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

btw did you know that Brian May is Vim Fuego (I know adrian edmonson plays the character but Brian May plays the guitar on the albums). I had the Badnews tapes when i was young and he produced both albums, and did most of the serious guitar work.

Johnny Marr >The Smiths<  (hope he is still alive!)
Mind you the boy White from the White Stripes is a promising young player!

JOhnny MArr is still alive and kicking mate - plays a lot of guest appearances at last check!

My vote goes to Steve Vai, the man who once played 21 notes in a second

Went to see Dinosaur Jnr in Auckland, great show but an awful unanimated and lethargic crowd rather spoilt it. I recently watched a doco on Rainbow and you forget how good Ritchie Blackmore is/was. I remember when Sounds music magazine was at its hight, (early-mid 80's), people would vote for Blackmore as best guitarist pretty much every year in the readers poll in those days. I always liked Alex Lifeson, (Rush), until I got into other types of music, could'nt say nowadays....(grabs slippers and a cup of cocoa). Live Jack White was pretty good.

Can't say best - is impossible. Different styles of music and all that. Favourite, though, is a different story.

Probably Teppei Teranishi from Thrice in the Identity Crisis/Illusion of Safety/Artist in the Ambulance days

Oh, and Josh Homme from QOTSA

Eddie Van Halen, an absoulte pioneer in the world of rock guitaring.....but its hard becoz of the different styles around these days.

Way Back When: Jimmy Page (Led Zep)
80's/90's or NWOBHM: Dave Murray (Iron Maiden)
For old school rock and innovation: Eddie Van Halen/Steve Vai/Yngwie Malmsteen
The "Grunge" Days: Tom Morrello (RATM)
Thrash/Hardcore Metal: James Root (Slipknot/Stone Sour)

As a non-musical instrument playing gimp I'm in awe of anyone who can play guitar. I was once seduced into giving physical love to a plain looking waif-like girl simply because she could play "Where is my mind?' by The Pixies...

Buddy Guy - blues legend - think Stevie Ray Vaughan but more edgy (no, not a U2 reference)

now if Stevie were still alive ....

Do you reckon budding young tennis stars used their guitars to practice their volleys and backstrokes in their bedrooms when they were teenagers?

Joe Satriani would be my pick.
Lots of great guitarists but not many can stand up and play the whole thing without sounding repetitive. Only downside is someof his live stuff isn't that great. Taught Steve Vai and lots of others at GIT (the guitar institute). If you're asking about best guitarist as part of a band that's a different story...
I fink Alex Skolnick out of Testament is pretty well wicked. Gary Moore sounds good too esp the older rock stuff but there are others more technicalyl skillful like Satriani and Vai.
