Not being a Kiwi I'm not really sure which shops are the best / cheapest for buying a laptop?

Anyone recommend both shops and laptops themselves?

I don't really want to spend more than about $1200.

It's more important to decide on the right laptop than the right shop.

Cheapest is not necessarily the best.

Well I meant more if the same laptop was in various shops, which would be likely to be the cheapest shop?

Yeah I don't want any cheap rubbish, but I don't want to spend an absolute fortune either.

Advice, buy a laptop that does what you intended it for. EG if you are going to use it for the Internet  or studies then you dont need one with all the bells and whistles. Whatever one you choose, get one with at least 3 GIG of Ram. Lonegunmen2009-10-26 19:52:50

Cheers.

This is the type of advice I require.

It will be mainly for internet use, and I want to play Football Manager

Other than that, my gf uses photoshop and stuff for Uni work but generally it'll just be for bog standard stuff.

Sorry I edited my first thread to explain it better.

So you want a laptop then that has a reasonable video card - 256 meg of ram for it. Be aware some laptops have "shared ram" what this means is that your laptop hads say 2 gig of ram and you have a video card that draws off that ram to use for itself, say 512 meg. Another words you have a 512 meg video card and only 1.5 gig of ram.

So be wary of laptops that have shared ram.

I myself have an acer and an HP laptop, the HP is the better of the two IMHO.  It cost me $1800 when I bought it and it does have the bells and whistles, however I believe it is now a lot cheaper.

Lastly, remember what you buy now will be superceded within 6 weeks and also be cheaper. Do not be disheartened by this. My HP is a year old and still running well. I bought an extra gig of ram for it though.

Cheers. I saw an HP one on Dick Smith website for $1199 that looked not bad.

Good / bad?

I would want Windows 7 though, that one has Vista on it.

edit - I see this only has 2GB of RAM, going against your advice already, oops!

Not at all so you say to them you'll buy it if they tposs in an extra gig (negotiation can happen in this buyers market. Also tell them you'll buy it if the include a windows 7 upgrade free.

Vista needs a minimum of 1 gig for itself.

AMD Athlon X2 Dual-Core 2.1GHz Processor, 2GB RAM, 250GB Hard Drive, 15.6" Widescreen, DVD Writer, 512MB Dedicated Graphics, Wireless Networking, Webcamera, Windows Vista Home Premium & much more....

Notice it has 512 meg dedicated Video Ram. That means 512 meg for the video card and you still have 2 gig of ram for Vista dn your programs. That's good. But still ask for an extra gig and the windows 7, you might be in for a pleasant surprise as they might go there for you.

Ps, that lightscribe DVD is brilliant. I have that and on their website I downloaded FREE software which allows me to etch photos onto the DVD as a cover. Something that is not advertised. They recommend other software yet Lightscribe have a non advertised brilliant piece of software for free.

Hmm, I shall think about it.

How much would 1GB of RAM cost if they didn't chuck it in for free?

I had a quick nosey on a site that offered ram at $48 per gig. So at a rough guess anywhere between $50-$100 depending on the shop. I noticed your ram was only 1 dimm which mean one slot. The laptop should have 3 slots so you have 2 spare. Best way is to let the shop to put in a matching gig ram stick in for you. DSE did it on the spot for me.

Well, it's the first one I've looked at so maybe I will have a look about a bit more.

Heck yes, have a look and take your time. There's always a better and improved deal going on somewhere. The most important question you have already answered so the rest is dead easy - What do I want my laptop for?? Lonegunmen2009-10-27 17:07:15

This one I am using is basically knackered (seems to be some sort of problem with the screen) so I could do with one fairly quickly.

I just don't want to be conned by some guy in a shop who doesn't really know what he is talking about! Such a cynic I am

Yomcat, that is so true by these guys too keen to make a sale. It's not hard for them to do a little homework on their items surely??

Was that you in Aisle 12 last Sunday? I'm sure I saw that Fluro hat of yours. great place to view the goals from!! We were going mental after the 3rd one went in.

More people are interested in the screen size and whether their porn will look good on it or not. Doesn't matter that it's as slow as Clive Palmer and Vista or whatever will choke it.

On the other hand, a good sales rep should be able to have a decent conversation with me (or someone like minded) on the relative speeds of different types of RAM and processor combos.

I still like to buy all my hardware off the Internet. Being an Apple guy helps as well. There's not that much choice :)

We sit in Daniel (11). So probably.
