Big Brother doesn't know what he's doing
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Police teams set up to identify terrorism threats and risks to national security are spying on protest and community groups, including Greenpeace, animal rights and climate change campaigners, and Iraq war protesters.

On the list are..

AUCKLAND ANIMAL ACTION. Small Auckland group that protests against battery-hen farming and other cruelty to animals.

BENEFICIARIES ACTION COLLECTIVE. 1990s' group opposed to the then National government's work-for-the-dole and other welfare policies.

GE-FREE NEW ZEALAND. Nationwide network of groups opposed to GE food and the release of GE plants and animals into the environment.

PEACE ACTION WELLINGTON. Wellington-based peace group which spearheaded Iraq War protests and opposes the arms industry.

GREENPEACE. The international environment and peace organisation.

PEOPLE'S MORATORIUM ENFORCEMENT AGENCY (GE FREE). A GE protest group opposed to release of GE crops.

SAVE ANIMALS FROM EXPLOITATION (SAFE). Animal welfare group that campaigns to prevent abuse of animals, including in circuses, battery-hen farming and factory farming of pigs.

SAVE HAPPY VALLEY. A climate change group campaigning to stop a new open-cast coal mine in the Happy Valley area of the West Coast.

WELLINGTON ANIMAL RIGHTS NETWORK. A small animal rights group campaigning against battery-hen farming and the use of animals in laboratory experiments.

LOL - I'm involved with two of them...

Greenpeace are probably on every terrorist watch list in the world.  Mentals.

And if another one of their "collectors" gets in my face on Lambton Quay I will be on a watchlist somewhere.

"Do you care about the environment?"

"I did, f**kface, until you and your legions of commission-paid mates tried to put your hands in my pocket every time I leave the office.  Now, I don't care at all.  f**k off."

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Granted. Chuggers are a "tad" annoying.

Hard to believe that our police force consider a handful of people and...wait for it... a BANNER... a threat.

They have nothing on Sea Shepherd though, that lot deserve to be considered terrorists. As do PETA.

Given the lack of out and out terrorist organisations, or likely threat terrorist activity in NZ, the next on the list of threats to the security of the nation is either subversive or disruptive organisations. Given the history of animal rights organisations around the world of sabotaging/hindering/disrupting the operation of legal animal research and testing facilities. I think validly, that if some animal research centre was burnt down, or a crop of GE corn was destroyed in protest, I would imagine people would likely, and fairly, be entitled to ask 'Why didn't the Police know/do anything about it'

IMHO factions of the loony left (and right - ie KKK, White Power, Anti Jewish protest groups etc) are fair game to the security services of any nation, and I'm from a family whose details are likely to be mouldering in some MI5 or Special Branch vault somewhere due to my parents strong involvement in the trades unions and miners strikes of the 80s (and both in the UK civil service).

To be fair to Key he was on the radio this morning making it fairly clear that unless there were specific individuals of concern involved with these groups then he couldn't see any reason for some of them to be on the list.

(It should be remembered that I'm a raging lefty so generally unlikely to give Key props unless it's warranted, which in this case I think it is).

I feel dirty now.

Mate, I'm a lifetime member of PETA and I resent being lumped in with those f**kwits...

(by "PETA" I mean "People for the Eating of Tasty Animals"...)

Which sounded positive until the announcement, this afternoon, that the Police Minister met with the Police Commissioner and is "happy with his response".

And.... Just going to put this out there- the police commissioner actually gave the minister justification for doing what they are doing? Or can there be absolutely no justification for this at all ever?

Broad did but I guess his reasoning may not be in the public domain. I'll try an OIA question and see what they say.
"at all ever?".  Yes there can be.

It's not that hard a call...are these activist groups a threat to NATIONAL SECURITY? Very hard to believe so.

There's more belligerent, disorderly conduct on Courtney Place if you ask me....

It's amazing how often that happens - a bit like when I joined the Labour Club at uni in Northern Ireland, first meeting I went to, topic of discussion was their next activity - fundraising for families of republican prisoners in the Maze prison.

Didn't go back again.

An Auckland activist is demanding an explanation for the way she says she was treated by Customs officials after returning from an overseas rally.

Annalucia Vermunt says she was strip-searched, harassed and interrogated for more than four hours in November without good reason.

I was reading a letter in the dom yesterday about how the police seemingly only go after or track groups on the left and never groups on the right like National Front. It got me thinking, I just presume the police do track National Front and I have absolutely no problem with that. National Front are not doing anything illegal (most of the time), as far as I am aware you can think racist thoughts and talk about them to other people as long as you dont discriminate or become violent. In the same way enviromental groups can believe what they like and try and convince people of it. However both groups would have fringes that don't mind undertaking illegal activities to further there cause.
So why in the case of the National Front do I think its fine that the police track all of them and am not so sure that they should be tracking the environmental group?

You are going to come back at me and say they are abhorrent, racism is disgusting and they are all c**ts. Yes, yes they are but we have freedom of association, speech and thought.

Both as bad as eachother

National Front is a joke in NZ anyway, hardly worth keeping tabs on.
