So I am once again avoiding study, but have updated my blog...I try and do it once a fortnight on a Thursday. I've even got my own email list!

This week i'm talking about mercenaries

So aside from a plug for my own stuff, anyone else out there keep one? What's it about and why do you do it?

Interesting topic, have you read Dogs of War? Although fiction Frederick Forsythe used a scenario that probably has happened in the past and may well happen in  the future.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Yeah I haven't, the reason I got into it was the Highway to Hell by Josh Geddes who's a current PMC in Afghanistan, and the day I decided to do my topic I got the chance to interview a kiwi PMC which was just amazing, gave me a really good background to it all...

And FM what more needs to be said about Ade aye? Douche...Bag...

Disagree somewhat on your view of evolution of warfare - I'd say that the evolution has been driven by techonlogical and tactical changes, while the underlying causes and general mayhem have been pretty much constant since the dawn of time.

But pretty interesting stuff regarding the soldiers for hire, I'll try to keep an eye out for your future blogs...el grapadura2009-09-25 18:21:24

Yes agreed, I think there are State- based conflicts prior to the 17th century. The Crusades could be argued as one supreme Christian state against an Islam State.

Post WWII "people's wars" were down to the battle between Capitalism and Communism if anything although I agree that the French didn't help themselves by being arsy and should have followed the British model of handing over sovereignty.

I'd also disagree that "Traditionally mercenaries operated as individuals". Possibly in the 20th century were you have the "dogs of war" image of the mercenary but prior to this mercenaries were often large and well organised bodies of men.

It is widely thought that the decline of Egypt and Rome was it's over- reliance on large groups/armies of mercenaries, (although the reliance on mercenaries causing the fall of Roman empire has been disputed by one scholar who's name escapes me because I can't find his bloody book in my bookcase).

The Byzantium Empire had its Varangian Guard, William the Conqueror had a fair few Flemish mercenaries, the middle ages saw the rise of the "Free Companies", the French prior to the Revolution had major numbers of Swiss mercenaries in their army. I would imagine there are numerous other examples of mercenary regiments.

Even the 20th Century saw significant bodies of mercenaries being used, the Flying Tigers is one example.

Are mercenaries expensive? Not really because in a lot of conflicts you would send them in first as those that never came back from a battle would not have to be paid. (Poor old Richard Harris in the Wild Geese )

Is it morally right to use mercenaries? I think having large well trained and well equipped bands of killers roaming around is probably not the right way forward, even if they have a new tag of  "corporatisation". Think RoboCop.

There are many business companies out there that have no scruples in doing away with people or damaging places to make a profit. Just because a mercenary group sets up a office with a secretary and has a website does not mean that it suddenly makes them some purveyor of beneficence. A dog is still a dog even if you call it a cat after all.

Still an interesting article. Can you reference your quotes next time?

Thanks, yeah I studied a year or two of marketing at Uni, but quit to do Graphic Design, suppose there is quite a lot of overlap. Blog is mainly from a design point of view.

If you like that then the blog I basically copied was Brand New, which is much better than mine. Armin Vit (Guy who runs it) does much more research and heaps of people visit so good comments.

This was a Blog fail, what i've taken to doing is using Word 2007 to write the blogs in and it uploads it directly for me. In this case I copied and pasted but it didn't transfer them all .
If you or anyone else is interested in them please PM me your email address and i'll send you the full copy with citiations etc because there were some really interesting readings.

Hopefully over summer i'll get the chance to look at the UN, Mercenaries & NZ's military strategy, moving from a defence force to a rebuilding force...

Read this on branding the other day, which I quite liked:

"Rebranding". It's an awful, depressing term. A marketer's admission of failure, it basically says "you didn't buy enough of this product before - I'll put it in a different box and see if you buy it now." Depressingly, it often seems to work.

I don't think you can consider re-branding as failure. Most of the time brands 'style' becomes dated so they need a change. Or in countdown's case they are changing their brands to fit into one uniform one, so that their company is more streamlined. Or the function or the positioning of the company has changed.

What I don't get is countdown changing the logo to a 'W' for countdown though. It is the Australian Woolworths logo.

Totally agree Linds. Sometimes its because of failure, but I definately think that there are frequent needs to "update" your image. Case and point AirNZ recently. A friend of mine was involved and I love what they've done, but they wern't exactly "failing"...

Fair points. Annoys me that people (me included) are so influenced on what we spend our money on because of 'branding'. We're all retards. A product with a new image shouldn't be any more deserving for our dosh.

Read 'No Logo'? That's interesting...

We're all muppets, but hey when you spend the money on research how are brain works and what colours and types of symetry do to get us going then I guess they deserve it

Read parts of 'No Logo', occasionally flick through Adbusters, Looked through Bruce Mau's lifestyle and I generally agree with the 'First things first' manifesto.

I don't think you can say people are easily influenced, just that people think about how they 'position' themselves in everything they do. What decisions we make are now almost all to do with buying. Best summed up by Barbara Kruger's piece:
