I think I broke my finger but I'm not so sure . anyone know if you can still bend it when broken ? if you can bend it then I guess it's just badly bruised as it was black for about 3 days.

I broke my left arm 5 times (in  4 places the 1st time) but that was more obvious as the bone was almost through the skin after coming off my bike

It's probably a virus.  There's a lot going around at the moment.

Drink plenty of water, take some panadol and have plenty of rest.

If pain persists come back in a couple of days.

That'll be $50 please.  Credit card is fine.  Thanks.

Fractured my cheekbone playing cricket. It went all kinds of colours. Went out as an opening batsman without a helmet (I was 17 and invincible), opening bowler went short, I tried to pull it, missed completely and it hit me flush on the cheek.

The worst thing was I couldn't really play cricket again. Whenever I batted, I had a subconscious tendency to move (or jump earlier on) to the leg side, which meant I always either got bowled or knicked it. It was frustrating as hell. Average went from 40 to about 2.

Currently I have a very bruised shin from twilight football. Girl came in studs up and collected me right on the shin, and I wasn't wearing shinnys. It's still purple, red and yellow 2 weeks later.

Also a mate of mine broke his middle finger in college, it is bent at the joint. He didn't get anything done about it, so it stayed like that. He loved it because it gave his bowling a natural swing.

So Tegal my young Padawan, what have these two incidents taught you?

You can still have a fracture - swelling, abnormal shape, etc can deffo mean a fracture. What's it like now?

Could be broken - I did mine several years ago, similar stuff but didn't think it was broken cos it wasn't that painful... eventually went to quack and got x-rays just over a week later and it turns out I was wrong... and yeah, I could bend it a bit.

Last year in the Chatham Cup was watching Caversham v Manukau City. The City keeper came out of his box for a 50/50 challenge against the Cavy striker but only hung his leg out. The keepers tibia and fibula were both broken and the worst part was seeing him rolling on the ground but his ankle not moving.

I have done the same thing in cricket as to what happened to Tegal. Batter came in without a helmet so I bowled a few yorkers and then decided to throw in the short one which the batter was not expecting. He tried to move out the way but hit him flush on the side of his mouth. Quite a bit of blood started to pour out of his mouth. During the following week one of our team members saw him around town and found out that he had lost 3 teeth and ended up with 6 or 7 stitches in his mouth.

As for the original post from chefmivec, all I can say is go and get your finger checked out as took a cricket ball to the knuckle of my index finger and only thought it was bruised but have now later found out that it possibly was broken at the time. I now can't make a proper fist as there is less movement in the knuckle!

Yep fingers and ribs can be buggers to find out if they are cracked. I got hit by a car on my bike and the doc didn't even bother to order Xrays cuse she thought I'd just bruised them. Two months later whilst still in pain I got xrayed and had two broken ribs.

Basically it's your choice if you wanna get it checked out and pay $60 for A&E or risk permanently screwing up your hand, (see above post)

My hands are important for cooking, drinking and other stuff. I'd go for an xray unless your finger is a lot better.

Agree with getting checked out. I am not in Wellington anymore but Wellington hospital is free under ACC from what I can remember (could be wrong). Down here in Dunedin it is free with ACC but I wonder if it is worth it when you have to wait 3 hours to be seen.

It really does feel better . good advice but i think i'll flag the x-ray for one little finger tho last time I got an x-ray for my ankle it turned out to be fine just severe swelling. seriously it is my little finger  does it really matter

although at the start of the footy season ( pre season ) I landed on my ribs ,went to the doctor  and the doc reckoned I might have cracked one or two ribs but without an x-ray wont be 100% sure .Then went on to say even if you have broken a rib there is nothing he could do except offer pain management . turns out it probably was broken as I was in pain for about 6 weeks.

Fingers can take ages to heal and they could put a splint or something. Completely different from a rib..putting my father hat on here...go to the Dr!

I actually agree, it might need dressing and a splint. You could whack some ice on it in the meantime.

Could be a hairline crack mate. Get it Xrayed on ACC of course. I think I've cracked a bone in my ankle but there's not swelling however when you poked a specific point it hurts like fuck! Thinking of doing the same but can't remember how I did it. It was before the recent Napier tour!

So nearly 3 weeks later, most of the bruising is gone but I still have a rather big lump on my shin. Bit of a worry, might have to find time to go visit a doctor at some point?

I am no expert, but it must have been pretty bad if you still have bruising and a big lump. You are young and bruising itself should have started to fade fairly quickly, certainly within a fortnight.

My rule of thumb is if something is still there after a few weeks, I don't know what it is, it's still painful/looks different, then I usually bite the bullet and go and see a doc. Everyone has something going on anyway so a visit to the docs is never a waste of time.

I usually bruise quite easily.

But yeah I have that rule of thumb as well, will go to a doc after exams I guess. It's just always weird when they ask when it happened and you say "3-4 weeks ago" - they give the biggest glare.

Was the injury picked up by falling over when o defence or booting the ball up into row z?
If so it was probably a variation: elephantitus bramble.

My best and I've done many many damaging things over the years, but the most I'm proud of going back around 6 years or longer.

Mountain Biking at Belmont park not been there for a few months due to lambing season. I take the Takapu road entrance set off far to fast down that first steep decent only to realize far too late that the track has been partially washed out due to recent heavy rains. I try to jump the trench, I didn't get enough "air" crashed into the side of the trench and ended up in a pile of rocks. On standing up I realised I had a massive hole in right arm just below the elbow - muscle and all sorts of shit hanging down that should be inside my body spraying blood everywhere.

I'm buggered if I'm going to get helicoptered out as I'm British and I had to pull myself together. I pick up my taco'd bike and carry it up the hill. Vickmeist sees me and has kittens. Some chick on a horse calls an ambulance. I get to Wellington - 3 nights in hospital. The scrubbing of my wound was particularly memorable as they couldn't anesthetize it due to the drug just pissing out the wound so I felt every fragment of rubble and sheep sh*t removed. The Reg said "sorry this is really going to hurt" - he was right.

13 stiches and a couple of days on IV Anti biotics and it's 6 weeks off on ACC huzzah!

The look of horror when I took my blood spattered bike into the bike shop was priceless!

Don't know about awesome but kind of funny now... july fell off my roof cleaning out my gutter hedgehog bristle things... smashed up both legs than that night went to a hard house dance party and the next day cd barely walk & had a major bruise collection for ten days..... aug did the 14hr flight akld to vancouver and the next day walked for hours and had major calf cramps for two days... two weeks later ended up unconscious in Wgtn ER with bilateral pulmonary embolisms & the docs reckoned I got deep vein thrombosis on my flight to canada and both lungs were full of blood clots - come off blood thinners next week. doctors reckoned i was lucky not to die and must have been bloody fit to fight it so well so moral of the story is drum & bass can save your life & hard house can take it

and last year i broke an ankle tripping over my bunny at 2am in the morning then broke two knuckles the week before xmas falling over drunk after my work do
