good as an initial means of finding a trade but still need to do usual checks. The best source of finding a trade is a recommendation from a mate.

Used it a few times and happy with it, though expect the same deal as usual (lengthy wait for a home visit etc), but overall good service.

Highjacking this thread: does anyone know the minimum ground clearance to install under house insulation or have you used a company before which completed a tricky install for you?

Our house is very low to the ground but still sits on a timber frame and I'd like to boost insulation...

Thanks!

Current regs say clearance from underside of bearer to ground should be 300mm or  150mm if you have a damp proof membrane (polythene) installed.

Thanks Jeff, will measure tonight. Booked a home assessment for later in the month but wanted to do some groundwork first...

If the ground clearance is less than those minimums, it will be all but impossible to get in to do it. It will also do more harm than good to the house overall as ventilation is critical in a subfloor space for the durability of the timber.

Hmmm that's not great news (hadn't thought about ventilation). Sucks cause it's a lovely 1920s villa with lots of character but man does it get cold (and expensive to run with two heatpumps and a heater) in the winter!
To top it all off, the fireplace is pretty useless as it's a coal burner and doesn't work well with logs so we never use it as you have to constantly stoke it (yes, had the chimney cleaned regularly...).

If you can physically crawl under there and imagine installing insulation (pushing sheets of polystyrene between the joists), then it's doable.

Subfloor insulation probably won't help that much - ceiling (140mm of decent batts) and wall insulation (and more expensive windows) are more effective. BRANZ has this site which shows where heat is lost and how insulation works. Subfloor insulation is just the easiest to install (assuming a timber-floored house with enough clearance), which is why it's a big deal.

Another question. .. Does anyone have any recommendation for a waterblaster (petrol). Ideally something that has a power setting so I can use it on the house and car as well. Never owned or even used one before but live on a large section with lots of moss/weeds etc and will definitely make good use of it.. Budget up to $1k but ideally a bit less.

No idea but I'd try neighbourly or builderscrack if you don't get any recommendations

You realise this isn't actually Builderscrack (that's just the thread title).
