Yo,

We're looking at a new computer and may go through http://www.computerlounge.co.nz/systems/systembuilder.asp

Can someone tell me what they'd put in theres from the drop downs they have? Around 2500 is the budget.. used for pretty much everything

Cheers

Buy as much RAM as you can afford and your system can take. I heard Windows 7 will allow more than 4 gig and if so, then buy 8 gig. It future proofs you for a couple of extra years. XP will handle 4 Gig only but thats cool. I appreciater you are trying to keep the costs down. XP service pack three is still better than Vista. It's taken me a good month to have beaten Vista into submission and do what I want, not what it wants.

Get a 1 T hard drive, a tetrabyte will give you heaps of room for any music or videos.

Get a 1 Gig of RAM Video card. That G Force is good though. Any Nvidia G Force is decent. ATI are not too bad either.

Sounds good, just look into things like the fans on your cpu, power supply and gfx cards, aslo case fans. the more power you have the more heat and noise you get. nothing worse than a kick arse computer that shuts down playing Crysis because it over heats or thae rattle fans drive you crazy.
I would recommend the cooler master cm 690 case to start. bigger, more room for components and airflow. and allows heaps of fans to keep your system cool. Also i would recomend a cooler master power supply. They are worth the extra 20 or 30 dollars to upgrade to a 600 watt.
    Everything else seems fine.

BTW the trick with the CM 690 case is the power supply is at the bottom, and you need to install it upside down. the foot of the case is raised so there is airflow from under neath but if you put the power supply in the normal way round it vents into the inside of your computer instead of out the bottom.

PCU in Christchurch is building it. its one of there custom machines and theyve added in extra core cabling or something free to really reduce the chance of over heating. cost 2.5k and will be here on tues. will let you know how it roles but it seems sawweet..

Regarding the powersupply i think it should be fine. They wouldn't be selling it if it couldn't handle the power..

2 year warrenty is its covered too.

Coolermaster cm690, CM real power pro 520w
    Q6600 @2.4ghz
    4x 1gb Kingston 667mhz DDR2
    Gigabyte 8800gt 512mb (zalman fan)
    32mb cache 500gb Seagate Barracuda
My machine is now over 2 years old and wasnt top of the line when i got it. It cost just over 2k and still can run any game on max settings at reasonable resolution including Crysis (currently playing Borderlands on max settings)
I have blown the power supply once, as it was understrength @500w, so i got a 520w for the added safety. Your machine does sound overpowerd for a budget 500w power supply.
Tidy cabling can help reduce heat but airflow and power supply are the two biggest killers.

hehe this thread has made me want to start mucking around with my pc again and do some case mods. Also does anyone know of any decent lans that happen in wellington?
