Now, Let me start of with this. And understand that I lost my mother to Cervical cancer when I was you. I am not just being insensitive.
I wish that people collected for other types of cancer more often. The two big ones seem to be for Breast Cancer and the Cancer Society. The death rate of people diagnosed with Prostate cancer is about the same as breast cancer. Yet Prostate cancer research collections seem to be done on a much smaller rate.
I always give money to these causes, But I always feel like there should be easier ways to donate to a specific cause, like there is for breast cancer.
Looking at the statistics from 2007 (The most recent I could find)

Most common cancers, 2007
The most commonly registered cancer in 2007 was prostate cancer, accounting for 15.1 percent of registrations. Colorectal and breast cancer were the next most commonly registered sites.
For males, prostate cancer accounted for 28.6 percent of all registrations, with the next most common registrations being colorectal cancer and malignant melanoma of the skin.
For females, breast cancer was the most frequently registered cancer accounting for 27.9 percent of female registrations. Colorectal cancer and malignant melanoma of the skin were the next most commonly registered cancers for females.
Leading causes of death from cancer, 2007
Lung cancer accounted for the most deaths from cancer in 2007 (17.9 percent of all deaths from cancer). Colorectal and breast cancer were the next most common.
For men, the most common cause of death from cancer was lung cancer (19.0 percent), followed by colorectal cancer and then prostate cancer.
For women, lung cancer caused the highest number of deaths (16.7 percent), followed by breast cancer and then colorectal cancer.

Now, without doing that research, I would never have know that Lung cancer was our highest killer. Maybe ive heard it and just wasn't paying attention. But I always thought that Breast cancer had the highest rate of deaths.
I know that breast cancer is the most common diagnosed cancer. But I feel that our attention should be drawn to other cancers.
Also, where does the money we donate go?
Sorry if this doesn't make sense. I'll add more when I can remember more.Stefan2010-10-08 17:18:29

Good points you raise. I wonder if lung cancer does not get as much attention as so often it is caused by smoking, whereas breast and prostate the victims are less "responsible", so to speak.
Also, as far as I'm aware, the money goes to research and support for the most part. If you like I could do more research on it myself next week and get back to you.

I would just like to know where it actually goes. Because I doubt that most of the people who donate know where it goes.
Here is another thought.. As for some of the money going to support, Do you mean financial support families affected by it?
I know for a fact that my family didn't recieve any financial support when my mum was going through all her treatments.
Could that mean that, because there is no.. charity (or whatever) for cervical cancer, that there was no money there available to help us through bills or any other costs that came with it.
It all seems unfair to me really.
I also wonder what percentage from donations to the cancer society goes to different types of cancer research. I would guess that more funding is put into the most common type of diagnosed cancer.Stefan2010-10-08 17:41:03

Bowel Cancer is another bad one.
I hate any cancer with a passion. My mother has had it and I've lost a few friends to various forms of cancer.
I truely wish that the day they find cures for the various types, happens soon.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!
