"Rich people should do time too"
no, that is why we have fines. Money brings privilege and the 'Justice' system is in no way immune from that.

I am really not sure what any of this is about.

He means, Steve-O, that some are above the law and I'd say he's right.  They shouldn't but they are.

I've talked with friends about capital punishment before and one raised the point "If somebody killed your sister you'd want him dead, wouldn't you?"  To be fair, that would probably be the case.  But fact of the matter is I would not be thinking straight if something like that happened and actually wanting to see them get executed would not be a rational, thought-through decision.

I've always thought it be fair to execute mass-murders who kills hundreds and what not.

But then I've always considered living in prison knowing you're not going to go anywhere and do anything for the rest of your time as a worse punishment.

Sort of related.
I read that during the Iranian Revolution 1979 a guy turned up at the courts, in Teheran,  to talk to an official. He managed to get arrested tried and hung on the same day.  He hadn't done anything he'd just sat in the wrong place, while waiting, and beem mistakne for someone else...

Such as?

Discussing punishment with the relatives of victims is not ever going to elicit a rational response (well, maybe sometimes, but rarely).

We can't have a sensible justice system if victims and their families are allowed to influence punishment.

I'm not sure who is 'above the law' except maybe for Nico, but that's not important right now.

pertinent is that charges or convictions seem relative to the economic opportunites of the arrested.
if 'low level' criminality is influenced in this way why should you or I be confident in handing the 'system' the right of life or death?

there is a number of reasons why I believe or justice system is neither just , rational, inclusive or even transparent.  but this requires more longwindedness on my behalf so I'll refrain from a boring sermon.

"get tough on crime"
why? why those crimes and not these ones? why get tough on crime whilst simultaneously advocating or en-acting the very same economic polices Guaranteed to increase crime?

The David Garrett instance is both instructive and sadly appropriate. That he is defended by those seemingly with 'victims interest at heart' shows that our take on blind justice is seldom that.

It takes a special sort of country to execute the mentally handicapped. USA! USA! USA!

I agree with most the comments here. In short: It serves as no deterrent, life imprisonment is arguably a far worse punishment, it serves as revenge rather than justice, and innocent people have been executed/pardoned just prior to execution.

It has no place in a civilised coutry - just look at the map of countries which continue to apply it. Oh, the company you keep, America!

why shouldn't revenge be part of the justice system? is it possible any system that wants to be just addresses the rights/wants/ideals of those victimized? In a democratic and inclusive state citizens should be active in the Justice System. It's not some far off land of white rich men in wigs.

Justice for me is not some sadistic bloodlust. Otherwise bring back torture. Bring back public hangings and rotten fruit to be pelted at petty thieves. Bring back the dark ages. A ideal justice system for me is one which analyses the crime (and the criminal) objectively and addresses punishment with a mind open to rehabilitation, rather than solely serving to appease the victim(s) who want their pound of flesh.

Couldn't give you individual names, sorry, but one would be naive to think that the rich and powerful aren't able, in some cases, to get round the law.  I suppose I said "some are above the law" which isn't entirely true, they can't just do anything, but it seems people can get away with more.  Look at white-collar crime which can be far more devastating than many other forms of crime.  How often is that ignored.

Also the fact that minorities and the poor, in the States at least, tend to fall victim to capital punishment to a greater degree points toward advantage and disadvantage before the law.

I could look for sources and studies to back up my point but I can't be bothered and would rather you thought me wrong than go to the effort.

Lets start with the last meal
She (Teresa Lewis) requested a final meal of two breasts of fried chicken, sweet peas with butter, a slice of either German cake or apple pie, and a Dr Pepper soft drink, prison spokesman Larry Traylor said.
Definitly a need for crayfish and bluff oysters and Pav to finish. Diet Coke to drink.
What's worse, Death Sentence or Life
Life. Cant speak from experience, but I am pretty sure that most who have gone this far have probably given up on a good quality of life and death would be just another way that they have been able to cheat the system. (Added bonus. If the decision was wrong then the system hasnt burnt their bridges.
A Way of reducing prison numbers
A death sentence wouldnt be my way of reducing numbers. Try a massive downgrade in quality of prison life and a reduction in people who insist on being part of the PC brigade. Infactdo away with the whole PC Army. They are creating more trouble and problems than they prevent.

Rather simplifyed theory, but I am sure it would put anyone in parliement who could gurantee this happeneing.

People who use the term PC brigade should put it at the start of their posts, so I can stop reading earlier.

THIS!

Whenever someone uses the term politically correct, I stop reading as it almost allways means they can't articulate a real reason as to why they disagree with something. Seriously, what the hell does that term even mean?

The state should never be able to take anyone's life. So no, not even in 'extreme' circumstances.

+1

Can we get that rule for people who say "nanny state" too?

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight
