Why was Taylor's catch not a catch? Surely he held it long
enough?
I think the reason it wasn't a catch is because Taylor released the ball before completing his slide. To successfully complete a catch you have to 1) have full control of the ball in your hands and 2) be in full control of your bodily movement (this second part mainly to clarify catches near the boundary rope). In Taylor's case, he completed 1 successfully, but not 2. Therefore no catch.

I'd happily stab Tony Grieg to death with an HB pencil, but I guess
that's part of his value. Bill is so biased to Australia but he''s
a Victorian legend, and he's the ONLY one of the lot of them who
thinks the 12th man is hilarious, and happily takes the piss out of
himself. Gotta love him.
