Hey all, i'm taking 3 weeks off over Christmas and New Years to travel around the top of the North Island to see family and friends and re-discover how beautiful our country is.
I'll be spending a few nights in each of the following spots:
Hamilton*
Auckland
Whangarei**
Taurange
Te Puke*
Corromandel
Any recomendations of key things to do? I'm a big fan of all things sport and recreational, and any chance to get my camera out
*stopping here does not make me a yocal, it only shows I know yocals.
**stopping here is a necessity to get ready for some Bay of Islands kayaking!brumbys2010-10-11 13:51:36

Just off the top of my head make sure you go to Tree Adventures at Woodhill Forest. Went there about a month ago and thought it was awesome. Theres also a good mountain bike track across the road and you can hire a bike from them.
Oh and another cool thing to do if you've never surfed before or you want to have another go is the muriwau surf school at muriwai beach.

P.S. You might want to buy a map at the start of your trip.
Its quite a paddle from Whakatane to Paihia

Coming out with statements like that, proves you have spent far too much time with C-Diddy.

Needs more Rotovegas.
I don't know why Rotorua is nicknamed "RotoVegas". I guess it's the similarities with Las Vegas? Well, having spent a total of a week & a half in Rotorua in the last 2 yrs, I haven't seen any bright lights lighting up the place.

Get to the Kauri Museum at Metakohe - best in NZ.
You'll be the top dog! (Not often you get a chance to offer a sawmilling gag )

Rotorua definitely especially Waimangu Valley steaming thermals. On the way to akld, Paeroa and the bottle, then Miranda hot springs. Stone me for saying this, but give Coromandel a miss, it's just a rock. If you go the other way, try Rotorua to Hamilton direct, and note the earthquake ridden scenery.

Once passed Ak central, One Tree Hill views and the best chicken and chips around at the Noodle Box on Manakau Road at Greenwoods Corner etc; stop for fish and chips on the Shore and turn right head to one of the North Shore beaches; try the "Autobahn" caf just before Silverdale. Again take a right for Whangaparaoa Pennisula and try to find Manly Beach, lots of units for hire, it's just passed the Warehouse and shopping centre.
Definitely use the toll road to Puhoi, as the scenery is spectacular.
Turn left and stop at Puhoi, for the German pub, or drive on for the cheese shop, or if in a slow mood, the "tea rooms" on the right which does great home made pies, and looks out over the valley. The owner might play a Clapton tune for you. If you are heading West, SH16, turn off at Waimauku and head out the to Murawai Beach, but just tbefore you hit the coast turn left and find Maori Bay, with the giant waves, the very obvious remnants of an erupting volcano on the side of the hill, and a bit of fun with the hole in the rock. Drive back over the hill to the gannet colony, and take pictures of the white surf going straight up the coast. Pop down the hill for great fish and chips coffee etc. If you are really into wine, stop and buy some on the way from local producers. Wine tasting. Some make a night of it with open fire, lamb roast and wine and stagger back to the room.
You might notice a food and scenery thing going on here.
If you are heading towards Dargarville, the Matakohe Musuem with giant tree trunks, kauri etc, go a bit further and find Baylys Beach , then the Kai Iwi Lakes for camping/cabins.
Book for the night walk at Trounson Park Kauri Coast Holiday Park, you will almost definitely see a live kiwi or two and lots of possums and even a fresh water crayfish way in land.
Whangarei, the Musuem is good for exhibits but the food is decent and over looks, the Harbour.
Try the lively Whangarei waterfront and then head out to the Whangarei Heads, or Ocean Beach, with white water surf.
Broken hillsides and lots of food. That's the north island.
Let us know how you get on.

Forgot, you can pay homage to North Harbour Stadium in Albany, you can't miss it. Stop for a drink in the mall and experience true retail therapy and a half decent food court.
There, got it out....

Every time I return to Tauranga I go to the top of Mauao (Mount Maunganui). Decent hike with a great view at the top. Nearby Mclaren Falls is quite nice too. Good for mountain biking, sailing and sea kayaking. Whitianga is also a great place for sea kayaking. Best thing to do in Te Puke is head over to Tauranga, unless you want to check out Kiwifruit Country (they call it kiwi360 now IIRC) or the vintage car museum.
Rotovegas got that nickname because, IIRC, it has the highest amount of slot machines per capita.
