I heard that Clint Eastwood was making a film about Mandela, but recently found out that it will be looking at it the Rugby World Cup uniting the country. Film will be called Invictus

Things that made me go huh

Matt Damon as Francois Pienaar
Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela
Zak Feau'nati as Jonah Lomu

My understanding is that the film is more about Mandela as a transformation agent and the 95 World Cup Final is just one of the big events that illustrate this.

Based on book "Playing The Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game that Changed a Nation" by John Carlin

From what I've read (not the book, secondary info), because Rugby being the game for the 'whites' and football was for the 'blacks', Mandela getting South Africa to host the World Cup, having the Post Apartheid Anthem sung to all in audience and around the world and him appearing in the Springboks shirt was significant in trying to unite the country.

My only real problem with that is Matt Damon being in it.  Can't stand him as an actor.  Before I heard about this movie a few weeks ago I'd said that Morgan Freeman looks a bit like Mandela so I think he can pull it off.

Freeman has already played a Black Man in Jail so maybe they should let someone else have a go...like Will Smith!!!

Depends on how Eastwood feels about adding fictional characters to films based on true stories

Now Lonegunman, if you are reading this thread, Mandela is the perfect argument for rehabilitation through prison- he hasn't reoffended has again has he?

I think you'll find that Hancock was a black man who spent time in jail too

Does that mean it was good or bad?

I thought it was a brilliant movie.

On Clint Eastwood's recent films;

I thought Gran Torino was good. Acting was a bit poor, story was predictable, but nonetheless a good film. Liked Changeling, Million Dollar Baby was over rated (and not a Hilary Swank fan either), Flags was ok, Iwo Jima was good. But my favourite one would be Mystic River.

Unfortunately he was unable to attend his 94 (?) birthday bash recently. Shame he isn't only about 50 as he seemed to be the only guy that could keep it altogether in SA. (When his ex wife wasn't screwing it up for him)

Matt Damon just seems a bit of the small side to be playing Francois Pienaar. Looks more like a ref
