So I've played football in NZ my whole life, but I've recently moved to Brisbane, Australia. I play my first match and last only 30 mins before cramping up. I've never had cramp before in my life.

Whats with that? I have a whole new respect for A-League players. It's like playing on the moon... totally foreign. Damn it's humid over here!

Do you have enough salt in your diet? cramp can because of lack of salt and in Oz you'd be swetting a fair bit out.

You might be right. Might have to have to load up the Powerade's before the next match too.

Magnesium Phosphate from your local homeopath...swear by it! (From someone so unfit that -20C may still be hot enough for cramp to set in!)HarryHotspur2008-03-01 19:26:01

Why play soccer in Brisbane summer??? are you mad? a walk to the shop is tough enough...and the ground must be harder than concrete?

though those queenslanders play afl, league and rugby on it...though not all in summer....

replace the powered sports drink is brilliant for that!

my dad drinks it and use to suffer from cramp frequently but not so often now he drinks that

Oh HN? How much does a season cost these days? And how many games? I played a year over at Whitby for the seagulls bit would prefer something closer to Upper Hutt. Our own Master team was more of a who knows who selection.

Mate, shove a packed of chips down you half an hour before you go on, that solved it for me.

While salt loss may be a factor it is unlikely you will have sweated out enough salt in that short a time to be a problem.

Most electrolyte replacement drinks will help because of the secret ingredient they contain - water!

It is most likely that your cramp is caused by dehydration so make sure you keep your fluid intake up before, during and after the game.

If you still have problems try reducing your caffeine intake because even though it speeds up your metabolism and may improve your performance, it also increases the rate at which urine is produced and you dehydrate faster.

Reduce caffeine?

A can of Redbull at half time is just the ticket! Or is it the other active active ingredients that used to help me?

Some quality advice on here. I played a match on Saturday avo (after cramping up on the Friday evening match). It was about 30 degrees, pretty humid, but I got through the whole thing without buckling over in pain. A couple of teaspoons of salt and a couple of Powerades did the job. All I need now is a glass of raw eggs for breakfast and I'll be taking on Rocky.

Cheers

To be fair, I may have cramped up after 30 mins on the soccer field over here in Bris, but I have cycled from Picton to Queenstown on a crappy old Warehouse mountainbike before. Took me over a week though!
