You mean a VW Golf?

But yeh pretty crazy. Part of me really hopes the driver was f**ked so I don't have to believe someone in their right mind would do it.

Here it is truly Horrific http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-12604639

I just cannot understand the hatred some people have for cyclists, a bike is a tool to get from a to b ffs. You don't try and run someone over for using a drill or a can opener.

I know nothing about cars (although I did get excited that my 22 year old heap of junk made it around the clock for the first time today!)HarryHotspur2011-03-02 20:45:28

I'm fairly confident that Dolores has as little interest in what you have in your pants as I do lol

but seriously... how can you not lust over a McLarens road bike. it's all about the lycra baby... or at least all about the slimline hard pumped tyres

Depends on if I wear my Vuko shirt or not.

Road bikes just don't do it for me. Never have.

I dabbled in duathalons as a way to keep fit in winter for summer MTB racing. Different set of people - sort of like skiers and snowboarders.

I'm too un-co to be any good at mtn biking. have the great ability to foresee myself canning off and therefore freezing up at jst the right time fulfilling my own prophesy lol. I do like to piddle around the flats on my mtn bike tho or do easy tracks round taupo/rotorua etc.

But I love to go head down on the road bike tho find Wgtn's roads/traffic intimidating so mostly jst get my fix at rpm where i can be in the techno zone without worrying about cars

but like all girls i so do admire a good chassis

Also... I ski over boarding; blade over skateboarding but I do love surfing which I always wonder about since normally surfers like boarding on snow and wheels

I dunno I get more of a kick out of a bike like this:

Mind you I don't own a road bike as such. well one that is in fully working order I just have a Xbike a Salsa La Cruz and a Surly LHT touring bike. I found an early 70's Carlton road bike but I can't ride that at the mo.

It was pretty cool doing the Hospi last week on the touring bike up against all the roadies.

You should try more mtbiking it improves your handling skills no end.

I have an expensive Giant road bike that rarely gets used & a cheap as mtn bike that I muck around on. Roaring dwn steep bumpy hills jst doesnt interest me. Don't know how you guys protect your important bits but lol I find boobs and jarring are no fun plus my pain selectors are really picky - barely notice a good shot in the ring and take a zillion hard smacks playing inline hockey but I scream like a bay if get my eyebrows waxed or get a little bike graze

The great thing about MTBing is that you don't get gravel rash.

Shingle roads are another issue.

Shingle and baby heads make lovely wounds. I spent 3 nights in hospital and still have a scar from the 14 stitches I needed to have my elbow sown up. The worst thing was cleaning out the sheep sh*t and smaller stones with surgical sponges. Because the area hanging off my arm was no longer connected to veins and stuff the local anaesthetic the surgeon injected in would just p*ss out again so no pain relief at all.

He was like "this is really really going to hurt" - he was not wrong.

You crazy young thing you!

I have also spent time in Blenheim Hospital after coming off in Nelson (rather infected by the time we got to Blenheim).

However don't let these things put you off MTBing SK. The scenery is great (as long as you don't have too many close ups of it), there is as much adrenalin as you want to make of it, and generally it is a good excuse to eat lots afterwards.

Of course this stops when you become all mature like and grown up (or when your partner tells you to).

Back from Europe. We checked out Copenhagen and as ever Vickmeist does her bit in promoting the Nix.

It's a weird place to go for a cyclist as there are so few cyclists there just people who ride bikes and everyone does. Most bikes are rusty 3 speed internal hub jobs that seem to last for ever.No lycra, no carbon famed bikes they don't even bother locking them up half the time.

Over 3 days we only saw about  3 OBESE PEOPLE. I wonder why that is?

The car drivers are amazing though they just take care of the people on bikes it was scary all these polite drivers giving you the right of way and not hooking you or cutting you up it messed with my mindset.

England seems to have more people cycling and we managed to get some truley awesome mountain biking in around Dartmoor. The car drivers again seem to be somewhat better than over here.

If you go to Dartmoor and need a bike then these guys do some beautifully maintained bikes:http://www.devoncyclehire.co.uk/

I have known (professionally) Swedes, Danes and Norwegians - all very nice people but there is a bit of rivalry between them. After one comment one time (Swede about the Danish) I trawled the net and found this.

The joke is quite funny:

A Swede, a Dane and a Norwegian are shipwrecked on the proverbial desert island. A genie appears out of thin air, informing them that they can each have a wish granted. The Swede immediately says, "I want to go home to my large and comfortable bungalow with the Volvo, video and slick IKEA furniture." So he vanishes. The Dane then says, "I want to go back to my cozy little flat in Copenhagen, to sit in my soft sofa, feet on the table, next to my sexy girlfriend and with a sixpack of lagers." Off he flies. The Norwegian, after giving the problem a bit of thought, then tells the genie, "Cor, I suddenly feel so terribly lonely here, so I guess I wish for my two friends to come back."

Sounds like the Scandinavian version of "There was this Englishmin, Scotsmin, & Maorimin...."

What  the bit about husbands trying not to stare at the "stunning local women"?  Yeah that was me alright. Thanks for the link it was a great read, particularly about lovely Nyhaven.

On different note I notice my friend Patrick Morgan from Cycling Advocates Network stated the reason people don't wear high vis clothing is the perception that it looks "dorky" and he's got some flak for it.

Both of us were at a cycling conference a few years ago with guest speaker Philip Darnton who spoke about how alienating the lycra look is. Philip, myself and Patrick are about normalising cycling. However a recent study from NZ suggested that wearing high vis clothing does reduce the chance of being hit significantly.

The biggest factor in reducing collisions between vehicles and bikes is a change in the mindset of drivers though not changing the cyclist clothing. That is changing the whole way NZ drives, such as speed, patience, self-righteousness and reducing distractability within cars. I cannot see it happening.

This is the worst time of year for near misses, I'm getting at least one a day of close calls, being "buzzed". It happens every year at this time and I reckon people just lack the energy needed to drive carefully.

Still spring is around the corner and then my belly is off on holiday.

If it is regularly this time of year then could visibility play a part? Either that or more people are on the roads compared with warmer weather (i.e. driving when wet/dark as opposed to cycling or cramming into buses with everyone else's germs)?

They've taken six inches of top soil off the skyline ridge all the way from Karori to Crofton Downs! MAkes the winter commute home far more appealing with th eprospect of a) not riding in pugged cow sh*t and piss b) being able to avoid cars zipping past me on the Bowen hospital hill.

Agreed. I went out for my first cycle in a while on Saturday, and couldn't believe how impatient some drivers are. Not all, but there are some that are just ridiculous. The thought of waiting for 10 seconds until you get round the corner to pass is too much, instead they overtake on a blind corner, whilst also beeping at you and giving you an earful for being so rude as to invade their road.
Vent over.
