Kia ora boys and girls, it's Brumby's assignment time, & for once in my life I haven't decided on the answer before I begin it!

The question is "what is the most pressing challenge for human rights; poverty or despotism? A bloody interesting question, and almost philisophical in terms of it being like the chicken and the egg...

Feel free to post some thoughts, and if I use any of your material i'll ask your permission first and cite you!

Also please note i'm not doing this so you guys can do my work for me, more to get a much wider perspective because you lot are rather smart

Well, a Despot may be benevolent and therefore could allow lots of human rights except possibly
  • Article 21.1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: "Everyone has the right to take part in the government of their country, directly or through freely chosen representatives,"
  • Article 21.3: "The will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government; this will shall be expressed in periodic and genuine elections which shall be by universal and equal suffrage and shall be held by secret vote or by equivalent free voting procedures,"
  • and article 7:"All are equal before the law..."
Basically stopping people being represented in the running of the state, and the Despot would be above the law.

All fine and dandy in theory

You can get lots of info from Dev-Zone on poverty and Human Rights issues

It boils down to one question: would you rather live in poverty in a free society, or in relative affluence in a dictatorship?

Feel like a Chelski joke needed somewhere here. (Toon would qualify for poverty).

The irony is that there actually is a homelss world cup

what is the world coming too.

just for my 5cents worth - i don't donate money to people like Worldvision etc.. because i don't believe the money (all of it) gets to those in need. i always see people who work in Worldvision driving brand new Mercs,BMW's etc...

i also believe the USA government was involved in 9/11.

(there is strong evidence in doco's I've watched)

anyway - carry on........................

WorldVision is very open about the fact that either 20 or 25% of donations go straight to admin costs...which sucks! BUT at least they're open about it.

This reminds me of a Larry David joke on one of the Curb Your Enthusiasm DVD extras:

"Who do you think has more freedom, a single guy in China or a married guy in America? I'm going with the single guy in China"

Good thread. Lots of thoughtful stuff.
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.
