I have my full licence here in NZ but its only in automatic, when I move to England will I only be allowed to drive automatic in England, both, or will I have to do my learners all over again?

You'll only be allowed to drive auto.

You can drive on your NZ license for 12 months.
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/DrivingInGbOnAForeignLicence/DG_4022559

But after 12 months, and you have become a UK resident, you'll have to apply for a UK provisional license and sit a theory and practical test

  • you will not be able to exchange your driving licence for a British one, however, you will be able to drive in Great Britain (GB) on your full, valid driving licence for up to 12 months from the time you first become resident
  • you will need to stop driving once the 12 months are over
  • if you wish to continue driving in GB you will need to get a GB provisional driving licence and sit a theory and practical driving test

The theory test is a piece of piss (although much harder than New Zealand's one). The practical test is however VERY strict, example, I failed because I took a corner in the wrong gear. They are Nazis.

Or, perhaps, NZ drivers need to wake up...that the rest of the OECD countries do not offer their driver licence free in Christmas crackers

And then become one of the angriest and least courteous users of roads in the western world....

I completely agree. I think the British licensing system is how it should be done. Compared to New Zealand, they are very strict, which says a lot about the New Zealand licensing procedure.

Don't you find driving an auto in Welly to be very sucky?

I always did.

I failed my UK driving test twice when I was 17, then didn't bother about driving until I moved to Oz then passed my test first time in NSW 7 years ago.

Examples of techniques you can be tested on, a couple of which that they don't seem to ask you to do in Oz (or here for all I know).

Hill start. Basically, with the car ( a manual)  parked facing uphill, start the car and move off without stalling, or rolling backwards, another one on this theme is balancing the clutch at lights on a hill and moving off without stalling.

Reversing around a corner. Get the car from a parallel parked position 2m from a corner, to the same position on the road on the intersection behind and to your left, without hitting the kerb or veering further than a metre or so from the kerb. (The only thing I can this is useful for is for when you get blocked head-on on  single-track roads and you need to reverse into a drive-way behind you).

Changing the direction of the car using forward and reverse gears, examiners name for a three-point turn, without stalling or hitting the kerb.

Parallel park, without stalling, hitting the kerb, the other cars, or taking more than 2 or so forward and reverse movements to straighten up once in the space.

I did all of these here, but in an auto. I know they are extremely harsh in England and it really is an achievement to pass first time, most take 2, 3 or even 4 attempts.

I did my driving test in the UK in 2006, failed the 1st time, but passed without any minors the 2nd time.  But because I had only held my license for 1yr before coming back here for Uni, I had to sit the full NZ license (theory and practical), which I have to admit is a piece of p*ss. The theory is much easier over here, mostly due to there being no 'hazard perception' test like there is in the UK. While if you tell the driving instructor that your converting your license, he just makes you go round the block! I didn't have to do any turns, hills starts, or parking. Was quite shocked really.
