Puzzled why the corinor is insisting on autopses. I thought the cause was pretty obvious. It seems like another delay the families don't need.

Not just hundreds AJ13, thousands. 1500 farmers from all over Canterbury (and possibly further afield?) have travelled into the city in tractors or with a shovel and barrow to help remove the silt, and what's even better is they're working together with god knows how many students which is just moving things along so quickly. None of these guys are getting paid for what they're doing, they just do it in their time off, I'll be joining the farmy army tomorrow on my first day off since the quake. Get in!

That's great to hear.

Last year, when there were floods in Nth-East Thailand, dozens of farmers came out with tractors to help tow cars through flooded sections of highway, charging around at least 200 baht (about NZ$8-10) a time.

Anyway, time for me to focus on the positives to come out of this event. My family are all alive, football season is close at hand (hopefully) and I'm off into town tomorrow to help those less fortunate.

Mainland Football has an update on their site where they state the CCC have said checking and where necessary repairing sports grounds is of low priority.

Mainland Football say they are looking to start the season on April 16th, which i think is two weeks later than had planned.

Full article here

Key paragraph here (incl my grade Pressies B!)

Mainland Football has set a tentative date of 16 April to commence all Senior, Masters and Presidents grades and 30 April to commence junior football.  These dates are not confirmed at all.  We have another meeting with CCC on 21 March which should be more useful with regard to setting a season start date.   We would like to think these dates are still realistic but we wont know until at least after this meeting on 21 March.

Some of us have been discussing this in the MPL thread. That update was done before a meeting with various sporting codes in which the CCC said sport was a low priority. I'm also in Pressies B with Halswell.

A big earthquake in Yunnan (inland) and also a big one near Japan earlier as well.

The footage on Campbell Live of the 8 magnitude earthquake inside the TV station was interesting - it seemed to go on for quite a long time and people remained at their seats/desks for the most part.

This is not good at all. That Tsunami is tearing the sh*t out of the coast on Japan.

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

First confirmed death was in Ibaraki Prefecture, which is where I stayed on student exchange years ago. Really shocking stuff. Thoughts with Japan right now.

The Japan game was scheduled to be played in Tokyo, which looks like where there has been a lot of damage.

I'd say all sporting fixtures in Japan will be off for some time. I imagine it will be a last priority.

*On a side note, there is no freaking way Chch is going to be ready to host a RWC game now, so at least we wont have to people arguing about that anymore.

TV3 just reported that the earthquake was felt in Tokyo, but there are no reports of damage. Tokyo has not been affected by the tsunami, so the game might still be able to be played.

I've heard otherwise - nothing compared to the sweeping waves on the news but some damage. Bit of buzz about Tokyo Disneyland in particular not doing too well. Doesn't really matter though - football is less of a priority here.

To be honest, suggesting this game will be played is like suggesting Chch should host it's 7 RWC games. Except the quake in Japan was MUCH bigger and Japan v AW is a nothing match. 99.9% sure it wont happen.

We're expecting a 30 foot wave here in Hawaii at about 3am (2am NZT). Currently lying on my bed on the second floor of our dorms, about 500 metres inland. we'll get told whether to evacuate at 1am.

Wow, I just got back last night from 6 days in Chch, knocking on hundreds doors in some of the worst hit suburbs (Aranui, Bexley, Dallington). So this all seems a bit surreal.
I've been struggling to get my head around Chch, so can't even imagine the carnage that this is going to cause in Japan and everywhere else.
Unbelievable.

I might have mis-heard but I think they just said on the news that 7 of the aftershocks so far have been bigger than the Christchurch quake.
