with all the other sh*t that is voiced/written on here that kind of comment is hardly offensive....spme of you need to get over yourselves.

I'm not saying it's offensive, it's just a stupid thing to say. Why would you want an earthquake to happen? We had one that killed 181 people not too long ago. That is still fresh on peoples minds so it's a sensitive subject.

Stefan I know you weren't trying to offend anyone and I don't want to make a bigger deal of the comment than we have to but I really don't think people who have been effected by the chch eq would understand why you'd wish for an earthquake

Just move. Seriously. Every time I go back there (my parents live there) it is even more soulless than the last.

I would like an Earthquake to hit Robert Mugabe's house. So there is one reason.

Three for me, and two for them.

We were just about to leave home for christmas shopping when the first one struck and thought the malls would be closed so we ventured for a look. When the 6.0 hit we were in the car on Blemheim Rd, all the cars stopped and we couldn't go anywhere for about 30 seconds or so. We knew now the malls were definitely going to be shut and tried to head home. What a nightmare.

Just had a couple that weren't big enough to cause any great panic but just large enough to make you take notice incase they get bigger.

I've only been here since the 22nd, but I'm already sick of these.

Juniorette a bit scared, but otherwise fine.  Went on for quite a while - I was waiting for a violent shake which fortunately never happened.

Nightline say it was scale 7 (initially reported as 6.5), 65 km SW of Opunake, lasted for 53 s.  Need a Cantabrian to calibrate it properly.

Yeah it went on for so long, I kind of started to wonder if it was about to get violent. Wasn't bad at all in the end though. But definetly the longest one I've felt by a mile!

Allegedly

What you feel depends on the depth & the distance away from the epicentre.  Had last nights quake been only 5 - 8 km deep like the Chch one, the effect would've been more severe.  Lucky it was 230 km deep which is considered very deep.  Also, what you feel depends on what the structure is sitting on - less shaking on rock, more shaking on silts & sands.  So, you can't just say after feeling a quake & say "oh, that's about a 5.5 on the Richter Scale".

There is another scale called the Modified Mercalli Scale (MM).  The scale goes from MM I to MM X depending on what is felt.  It is very much like the Beaufort Scale for wind.  Personally, I think the Modifeid Mercalli Scale is more appropriate for the lay person.  Using the scale, last night's quake would be about IV which is classified as a Moderate quake.

I know some people in Christchurch that are very, very accurate with their predictions for magnitude AND depth of earthquakes.

So what did people think about this morning's effort(s)?

I thought there were two - the first one seemed to go on for ages.  After a short pause the second one was a bit weaker and not for so long.

Still stayed in bed.

Same here as well. Was listening to Mark Richardson on Radiosport and he commented halfway through that he just felt an earthquake in napier. He didn't even pause. Was quite funny.

I can concur that it was a doozie in Napier! I did the smart thing and ran straight towards my TV because it was looking like it could fall over!

I saved it!
