Didn't feel a thing in Upper Hutt.

 Just off Seddon top of S/Island 8km deep - 5.7.  Good old groan from the old concrete building.

My boss moved to Wellington to get away from Christchurch...she ran out the door straight away.

The newest building in Wellington swayed gently but seemed to hold up well.

asleep as on nights. felt the bed shake and thought he we go again but it was the cat having a scratch at the end of the bed :)

Was in the middle of the stadium and didn't feel anything until I heard then saw the roof and light towers waving. Quite a strange experience but felt safe out there with no structure near me

Was in the High Court when it hit. Was fun. Shake rattle & Roll.

just looked at geonet. There have been quite a few aftershocks since Friday including the last strong one.

5.8 this morning just after 7 and the after shocks continue around the country. Who dropped the quick Ezze

only damage here is to my wife, who is freaking out and wants to move back to London tonight.

Was sitting in my car in the underground carpark at pack and save kilbirnie. Gave me the shits.

Phone and power outage in K-Town for a while.  All back on now.  Had our candles and warm clothes at the ready.  Got the BBQ moved outside.

Back to normal for now.

In a retractable grandstand at ASB Sport Centre.  Not ideal.  If I wasn't in public I would prob have cried.

Am on the second story of a buildingsince 2pm today, felt each and everyone. Talk about surfing on the office chair. Like watching the Geonet drum, very impressive.

Doesn't look like we will be getting that new stadium soon.

Can confirm it was not pleasant on 7th floor of an apartment building. A few things flew off shelves but nothing too bad fortunately.

The most likely period for this to occur is the next 24 hours, when the probability is approximately 20% (a 1 in 5 chance).

Better not happen before our season passes arrive.

Best wishes for your bumpy ride from Christchurch - big quakes freak you out at first and though aftershocks can keep you on edge, you do get used to them.

Wellington's probably had an unrealistically long stretch without major quakes since the mid-nineteenth century when you had some huge ones. Are inevitable I'm afraid and they are a major drawback to living in many parts of this country.

Interesting to read your local writer Rodney Grapes' books on the history of Wellington quakes - destruction of major buildings, liquefaction, 11 metre tsunamies hitting Paekakariki and Paraparam and large cracks opening in the ground all experienced in mid-nineteenth century quakes.

Any damage to Westpac Stadium?

Probably built on reclaimed land, hence more vulnerable as in this report?

"Victoria University geophysics professor Euan Smith said much of Wellington's city centre was reclaimed land which meant it was not as stable as other areas.

"Where rubble has come down in Featherston St, there was no land there before the 1855 earthquake in Wellington.

"Reclaimed land shakes more easily and is not as strong as hard ground. From Lambton Quay and towards the harbour is also reclaimed land, and these areas will shake much more strongly than other areas."

The Hutt Valley was similarly on softer ground.

600 additional emergency calls between 5 and 7pm last night - what did people ring to tell them?  There has been an earthquake?  Did they not think that the emergency services were aware of that?
