bam!
Not as bad as the TV1 guy who was hosting the coverage on Saturday. He asked the expert if there was any indication this earthquake was coming.

NZ's worse disaster - hope you saw Campbell Live tonigt which gave a good indication of the extent of damage.
I don't want to get in to a pissing competition but I would suggest the number of deaths in other events would make them worse in my book. Property can be repaired.

Pretty amazing really - one heart attack victim and a lemur (drowned).
Would have expected more lemurs tbh.

The Napier quake takes the cake. Then maybe Erebus (although not in New Zealand), Tangiwai, and that boat one (lay off, I'm tired) in no particular order. Then probably the Christchurch quake just because of the widespread destruction. Might be something worse I'm forgetting. But yeah, it ain't a pissing competition.

I didn't see the question in ah, question, but often you ask questions with the aim of getting a particular answer, just for the sake of getting a source to say a particular piece of information. I'm sure the reporter was aware that quakes cannot be predicted and wanted the interviewee to say as much. There may have been a better way of phrasing the question though.
The same likely applies for the John Campbell question, as the faultine through Darfield is one that was previously not known of.
There was one over on the west coast of the south island in the 70s can't remember where exactly. Lots of people died.
Inangahua in 1968. Six people died as a result of the earthquake (although not all directly). Westport and Inangahua were evacuated. Also 7.1 on the Richter scale.
Might be something worse I'm forgetting.
Birko not getting promoted.
whats the damage to footy fields like? Sposed to be in a tournie at CS's Bexley Pk in late Oct
Should be OK.
Karori Park has undergone liquifaction at the start of the season and games were played.
Maybe a bit too soon, but anyone heard any earthquake jokes?

an earthquake might help the drainage at KP
Still shaking like a wet dog apparently. Also heard there are no lights at the airport, which is going to make my 6.30 flight somewhat interesting.
Funny timing that Jim Anderton said in an interview on Friday that it "It'd take an earthquake" to lose the election to Bob Parker.
So turns out this was a hoax. Mentalcase blogger Cameron Slater from Whaleoil faked up the video of the quote:

John Campbell asks an expert "Is it a new faultline?"
Moral of the story, don't build out of brick,
Also, the media shows the worst of it. Went into town today to do some business.. Some areas are bad yes, but alot of areas are untouched. You wouldn't think anything has happened. Town is a stand still. Took an hour to get to the court. Checkpoints left right and centre.
Good thing we don't live in Kaiapoi. Scottishbhoy2010-09-06 19:06:01

I wonder if the buildings that look untouched have been structurally weakened? That would give me a whole lot of angst when the aftershocks hit and for any future events.
My house is made of brick, and thankfully I only had the chimney come through the roof.
the garage os coozed though.
Kaiapoi is rooted.

I wonder if all the chimney's falling down will help Christchurch's smog problems...
the older buildings in town made of brick are gone, some of the newer buildings have cracks in basement so could be dodgy.
Kaipoi & Dallington - many houses are goneski - owners cannot go in and get any of their belongings - to dangerous. Still have to boil water.
NZ's worse disaster - hope you saw Campbell Live tonigt which gave a good indication of the extent of damage.
And a Lemur at Orana Park drowned in it's moat during the quake.

Haha, yes I saw that. As if he was going to answer: "yes we totally saw it coming, but we thought it best not to tell anyone".

This is the first time I've had the PC on since the quake. We live within a few k's of the epicenter. As I was typing this we got yet another after shock. Still getting them every 30 mins or so, just enough to make the ground and walls shake a bit. Power and water came back on yesterday about 3pm. The farm is f**ked to put it mildly. Had to walk cows to the closest dairy shed that hadn't fallen on it's arse about 12km away. We were one of the lucky farms who found a close neighbor and have cows on the move the same day as the quake. No houses have sustained any damage around here except one with some broken framing which is surprising considering where we are.

They're evacing chunks of Bexley. Can't imagine it's good.

Two big ones in the past few hours.
Interesting that on the Moment Magnitude Scale the Canterbury quake was bigger than the one in Haiti. In Haiti 92 000-230 000 died. We certainly got off lightly comparatively. Have to be thankful for high building standards, the fact the quake struck so early in the morning, and the fact that on a world scale Christchurch isn't actually a very big city.

I'm over these after shocks, must've been woken up about 4 or 5 times with the house shaking. The sooner they stop the better.
yeah ..me too.
They now say we might be in for a 6 sometime soon.
...and all because someone had sex with a monkey *shakes head*
Hawkes Bay was feeling left out.
