Mine's always been the tiger, but black jaguars are rad, as are panthers.

Discuss.

Defo tiger.

Aren't panthers simply melanistic variants of several species of big cats?

They are indeed, but it's like having a black 1968 Dodge Charger as opposed to an orange spotted one.

Not that keen on Black Cats or even Sundaland Clouded Leopards for that matter.

But when I see Shere Khan I do think of Chakka Khan.

Which is nice.

Cougars.

In all seriousness I'd have to say the Black Panthers.  Those things are freaking awesome.  Way better than lions.  And lets not forget leopards, they just sit around like jerks.

I'm aware that Black Panthers are a type of leopard but they are cooler than their more clearly spotted counterparts.loyalgunner2010-05-06 12:15:07

Lions for mine. The males are so lazy it really is something to aim for. Plus they got sweet manes.

In real life I've touched a cheetah and a tiger cub - was surprised at how rough the tigers fur was - more like a sheep than a domestic cats. Jaguars are cool cause they are sleek and sexy

Point of order M'lady!

How do you reach this conclusion?  I've only stated that I like a laff and have corrected you on spelling avant-garde.

I've recently starting sketching tigers for some strange reason - I can't draw at all, but they've come out really awesome because i've laboriously copied photos and used grids and measurements etc. I could never do it without copying a picture.

It's time consuming but fun.

I have no probs with opinions - its being lectured that irks me and Junior is one who has done it a few times. I've seen others tell him to get back on topic as well. He asked above why I think he has dibs on himself and I'm just responding as to why I came to that conclusion.

Anyway I hate my own threads being hijacked so not going to do that here...

Cosimo do you sketch in pencil? charcol?

Both actually - I use charcoal on the stripes, which makes them look really striking. It's really soft so it's hard to get it sharp enough for detail.

But you're actually tracing? sorry not sure how you mean re using grids and pics... have you actually tried drawring one freehand at the zoo?

I've been to Dreamworld in Surfers a few times and love watching the lazy tigers there. I went to this weird place in Vancouver which was kind of like a ranch with big cages where the old vancouver zoo animals had been relocated and they had tons of big cats in these cages that were kind of like rooved big deer paddocks and you just wandered along the farm tracks next to them. I havent been to Zion up north yet tho

No not tracing, but using grids to get sizing and stuff - like how you draw centre lines down faces etc. I measure stuff like the distance from the nose to the top of the head, and plot points, sometimes using relative ratios if I want a smaller or bigger picture.

That sounds cool, I'd love to see big cats in the wild.

A few years ago I looked into doing a National Geographic volunteer holiday but they're are fairly pricey. You pay up front then go and work for them for a few weeks and the one I was interested in was following jaguars in the amazon and helping the scientist measure their scat and chk its makeup and various other research to help plot their numbers and what they were currently feeding on. That wd have been cool apart frm the fact I hate snakes and dont really want to sleep in the amazon unless its a luxury 5 star hotel

I'm sure some of the YF boys will get up close to big cats in between games

Went to Orana Park in Christchurch when down in the village of the damned for the Phoenix game.  Did the jaunt where you go in a cage on the back of a truck for Lion feeding and the Lion's climb on top of the cage and all over it to be fed.

Quite impressive.

Lions don't watch TV, and would lick their balls if they so happened to be itchy.

Just imagine what the cats peering through your window at dinner time think of you?

Our big ginger tom.  His name was Puss (we never got round to naming him).  We got him as a kitten, stayed with us until we had to put him down when he was about 15 y/o (elderly in cat years), that was back in 1996.  He had character & quite chatty.
