are you kidding?

here are some stats:
As of 2005, according to The Guinness Book of World Records, Queen albums have spent a total of 1,322 weeks or twenty-seven years on the United Kingdom album charts; more time than any other musical act including The Beatles and Elvis Presley
In 2006, the Greatest Hits album was found to be the United Kingdom's all-time best selling album, with sales upwards of 5,407,587 copies, over 604,295 more copies than its nearest competitor, The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Their Greatest Hits II album came in seventh with sales upwards of 3,631,321 copies.[
The band is also the only group in which every member has composed more than one chart-topping single.

  • 2005 - The band's performance at Live Aid is voted two times by a large selection of musicians and critics to be the greatest live show of all time.[
  • 2007 - The band was voted the 'Best British Band Of All Time.
  • 2008 - The band was voted the best rockband ever on the Internet site www.votenumber1.com. Millions of fans from over 40 countries voted.
  • um ah yes, they are.

Proving that a band is amazing is pretty pointless. Obviousy there are several million people that will agree with you, arguing with the several million that don't will get you nowhere. It's personal opinion, you wont make HN think they're amazing by spouting off statistics; the Spice girls have sold more records than the bands I think are amazing, doesn't keep me from thinking the Spice Girls are sh*t.

Exactly, if we just base it on commercial success or votes on an online poll, right now they are less popular than Soulja Boy and the cast of High School Musical... (to be honest I'm not sure I wouldn't rather listen to High School Musical).

so you'd both rather listen to artificially computer created 'music' than actual music written by four of the best musicians ever?

next you'll be telling me you prefer hairspray to AC/DC i guess?

Bon Scott AC/DC vs Hairspray, no competition... Brian Johnson ?  Closer, much closer.

    Preferred the original CL...

Bon Scott >>>> Hairspray... Brian Johnson... unclear.  Incidentally, there is no way in the world I would have managed to spell Efron's name correctly.  I suspect deep down Franc you also know the real truth...

Serious answer, I preffer most Queen over High School Musical, but not by too much (We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions however, are pretty damn poor, make me want to smash my face in). I just looked it up and the single with those two songs reached number one in NZ, my already thread-like respect for this country has weakened.

The Enemy appeared in 1977 as well, so it wasn't all bad.

Oh, and "It Doesn't Matter Anymore" by Mark Williams = altogether now "Do you remember baby, last september..."  lyrical genius. Hard News2008-06-29 22:47:27

interesting fact about bon scott v brian johnson. apparently bon scott chose brian to be his successor should he leave the band after seeing him perform..i much prefer bon but brian wasnt a horrible replacement.

see thats what i like about queen, they have so many different kinds of songs  its like 4 or 5 completely different bands all in one. it means their stuff doesnt get old to me. and since there is so much variation generally everyone likes at least a couple of their songs..

Been mentioned I think. A bit too one-track and unvaried for me to listen to a lot but they're one of those bands whose one track is excellent and keeps working. Huge cultral impact though. Blur anyone?

Oh fer god's sake put him out of his misery.
Granville features on DKP22's avatar, being David Jason playing Granville on Open all Hours alongside Ronnie Barker.
Anyway, back to Queen. Yuk. The ugliest front man ever (quiet, Motorhead fans), more camp than several hundred boy scouts, a poodle on guitar and two non-events backing them. Their "music" is a pile of schizophrenic tripe. I mean, Radio Ga Ga, yeah, that took talent. Goddamned awful band. I spit upon their albums. Pttooeeeeweee.
Just about the only worse act are The Eagles. Horrible, horrible MOR/AOR soft-rock/soft-cock bollocks. A bunch of guys too wimpy to get into biker gangs so they swapped their leather for denim and flannel and formed the worst band to ever stalk our ears. And schizophrenic, way worse than Queen. One minute they are writing Take It Easy, the next they are singing Take It To The Limit. Make up your friggin' minds you gonads.
Nix, Leyton Orient and Alloa Athletic supporting schmuck.

oh classifying be sexuality are we?
i really dont thing the fact that freddie was ugly or excessively gay really matters when it comes to their music, but whatever.
obviously queen is an acquired taste, and whether you like them or not no one can argue with what theyve achieved as i showed on the last page, so there are obviosuly millions and millions of people who do appreciate their music.
the queer, poodle, and two non events also sold out wembley faster than any other band ever, and they sold it out twice in the time it took other bands to sell it out once. those other bands include led zepp, dire straits etc.

Arctic Monkeys are alright, I certainly wouldn't waste a rant on them.

I'm waiting for somebody to mention those redneck posers Kings of Leon - then you'll get a f**king rant!

Queen completely deserve the skewering they've been getting. Horrible, just horrible. Their popularity really only illustrates that the majority of people are completely clueless when it comes to music. And yes, I am being an outrageous snob. It's the only way to be when it comes to music. Otherwise you will never break free of the mainstream and discover the good stuff.

Thank god for cassettes of SLF and the Buzzcocks, bought during the mid-eighties out of simple curiousity (and because the names sounded cool!), but which saved me from the death-grip of Lindsay Yeo and the 2ZB playlist.

I was sorely tempted, just for impact.

My thanks go to a neighbour in Hamilton who in 1980 (ish) lent me his copy of Sound Affects on Cassette and it grew from there...

There's good poser and bad poser though. Just like there's good Dandy Warhols and bad Dandy Warhols. They've made some good singles but I had the misfortune of seeing them at the Big Day Out a few years ago and they were horrible. They were so stoned they couldn't be f**ked playing anything but a 40 minute set of drone.

All Big Day Outs tend to blur into one so I can't remember if that was the same year I thought I'd give the Kings of Leon a chance. What a bunch of w**kers! I've never seen a band treat the audience with such disdain. Hopefully they'll take the Lynyrd Skynyrd impression to the next logical step and die in a plane crash.

Maybe that's a little harsh. Only half of Lynyrd Skynyrd died in a plane crash, after all.

so what you're saying is that music cant possibly be good if other people like it or the band is successful?  thats just putting an outrageous prejudice on so much music..

and the people that like music that has been successful 'completely clueless'?  is there a chance, that maybe queens music is just fine and you just want to be different because it makes you seem like you know music better.
if your 'good stuff' suddenly became huge, as big as queen and millions of people started liking those bands and they sold billions of albums would that make you not like the 'good stuff'  as well? and would that make the majority of people completely clueless for liking that music?
