Few questions about NZ

Hi people, I'm an Argentinian student but looking forward to move to NZ in a couple of years so I want to know some things:

I was told is pretty easy to get a job, is that true? Inmigrants can find well-paid jobs?

I'm looking for a city not too populated (Auckland) with a not so cold weather (Dunedin), was thinking of Whangarei, Hamilton or Wellington, any recommendations??

I've seen SKY TV is paid, this happens with lots of channels? I mean do you have to pay for cable and also for certain channels?

Are apartments expensive? Do you think living in NZ in general is expensive?

If you're wondering why I'm in this forum, is not just to ask these questions, I've been following Oceanian football since 2011

Don't be scared by Auckland, it's a big city by NZ standards but not by world standards. Of of the most beautiful cities in the world.

As an Aussie, you should explain what that means.

what's  Tinder? Is that like Redtube?

Argentina, move to Hawkes Bay, has a great climate, lot a fruit growing there for peaches and apples etc and a fantastic choice of winerys to visit. And is only a 3-4 hour drive to watch the Phoenix. Auckland is a big sprawled out city with severe traffic problems.

Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

I was told is pretty easy to get a job, is that true? Inmigrants can find well-paid jobs?

Not sure about well paying jobs, but I've lived with a number of immigrants who have found jobs here in Wellington reasonably easily. Ranging from receptions, sales to engineer. You're English seems very good so I suspect you should be sweet.

I'm looking for a city not too populated (Auckland) with a not so cold weather (Dunedin), was thinking of Whangarei, Hamilton or Wellington, any recommendations??

Hamilton has a pretty average reputation for having nothing to do there. Whangarei is in a beautiful part of the country, but a bit smaller so jobs may be an issue. Wellington is a pretty compact city so getting around is pretty easy. Weather can be crap.

I've seen SKY TV is paid, this happens with lots of channels? I mean do you have to pay for cable and also for certain channels?

There are a half dozen channels that are free to air. But all the sports are on Sky TV.

Are apartments expensive? Do you think living in NZ in general is expensive?

Prices vary. In Wellington, you are probably looking at $200-250pw for an apartment. Or you can get a house near the CBD for closer to $175.

Wellington

Pros: Compact, easy to get around; diverse ethnic population (only Akld is more diverse); only professional football team in the country; nice waterfront

Cons: Weather is a bit sh!t; a bit quiet compared to Akld

Rest of NZ

Pros: Very quiet (if you like that sort of thing); lots of grass and trees (if you like that sort of thing)

Cons: As an immigrant you will probably have your car keys taken off you.

When you say move to NZ you mean to live, so you mean a job as in part of a career path, with whatever as a stepping stone, rather than a working holiday thing?

I guess the question is what are your skills and qualifications? I know people who have got jobs here easily, but they are also people in in-demand areas. The more you bring to the table, the easier it is to get a job. Who knows what the job market will be like in a couple of years though.

Housing is crazy in most large cities and in Auckland it's no different. Depends on how you are prepared to adapt. Check out www.trademe.co.nz to give you an idea about renting and prices. Otherwise there are all the real estate agent websites also.

Hey Argie,

As others said job-wise it depends on what you bring to the table. But if you either offer something that is in demand or alternatively are willing to do anything, you should be alright.

In terms of the cities you mention:
Whangarei: Weather = good, but you would find it a lot harder jobs wise, particularly if you're looking for something decent. Also not as much on offer there in terms of things to do unless you're willing to travel down to Auckland for it (2 hours drive-ish).
Hamilton: No, just no. Unless of course you like drinking some bourbon, jumping into a Holden and cruising around looking for fights?
Wellington: Would be my choice, but I am biased. Quite a few reasonably paid jobs on offer, housing affordability not too bad at moment (compared to Akl/Chch), and lots to do (including watching the only pro football team in NZ). Weather is pretty shark at times though.
Your next best option in terms of the criteria you've given is realistically Auckland as Christchurch gets pretty cold as well, and everywhere else you could struggle to set yourself up if you don't have something to walk into (assuming you're looking for a decent job).

I find it hilarious that paying for TV is one of your big questions in considering coming here. Ha. As someone else said there is free TV available though it's pretty hopeless. I stream everything online anyway so never watch it.

Living in NZ is a bit more expensive than other places, but not too bad. Got to http://www.trademe.co.nz/property to have a look at prices. You can switch between "to rent" and "to buy".

Hope that helps.
