If you are just starting out try the Wainui river a few ks down stream from the town, its small enough to be manageable if you are an inexperienced caster and you are less likely to have three guys fishing up and down stream from you who can cast a line about a mile and a half and land the fly on a sixpence  ,it gets a bit weedy and low later in the summer but early in the season its a great stream and strictly fly only  ,you're best to contact the local farmers whose land it runs through ,the fish are not huge but its a great wee river and near Welly !tight lines old son!!

The answer to life's problems are rarely found at the bottom of a beer glass - but it's always worth a look.

instead of having bait or a lure you use immitation flys.
 
 
Dif rods, line and technique plus alot more fun.

I have never tried that Ned, maybe I will give it ago this afternoon depending on the weather,

You may have gotten confused. You meant to say "America's Cup Yacht Racing is like watching paint dry."
 
Fly fishing allows man to relax and get in touch with one's inner self and solve the problems of the universe. It's almost like meditation but better fun.

Only thing more boring than that would be watching someone fish off an america's cup yaught.

I like fishing, mind you I've only done it twice (three times if you count jumping into the sea with a stick and unsucessfully trying to spear some fish).

Watching the America's Cup is awful though, and watching somebody fishing on TV isn't a lot better.

That's a beauty of a fish from out of the Cam. I learned to fly fish in the Hurunui and up at lakes Taylor, Sheppard & co. I learned from a painter and he swears black and blue that fishing is more exciting than watching paint dry!
