I'm looking forward to Wagamama restaurant opening on the waterfront.  It's noodles and in and out quick and everyone sits at benches elbow to elbow.  Very sociable.

Mind you, as you get older, food becomes more important than sex - in fact my wife and I just installed a mirror above our kitchen table

I forgot Manon in Riddiford St, Newtown.
It's a French restaurant that feels like you're in France, with the atmosphere.
And the food is amazing.
Great place to impress a date.
Not the cheapest but worth the money.

Pearl is a good seafood restaurant on the waterfront at Petone.
Above the fish market.

Manon. meh - I wasn't that impressed when I was there on Valentines - the food was ok but the service was poor. We were seated right in front of the kitchen door and also close to the till and doorway - so we had a cold draught blowing over us, and everyone going in & out of the kitchen bumping into us, they also refused to move us saying the place was fully booked - even though we were one of the first seated. It was a set menu which included sparkling wine in the price. The bottle of bubbles when opened by the waitress frothed out of the bottle, and half of it ended up on the floor - no complementary glasses of wine were offered to compensate for what had ended up on the floor, which I was a bit po'd about seeing as the wine was being paid for as well as the meal.

Overall quite a sh*t dining experience.

When Hibs, went up, to win the Scottish Cup - I wisnae there - furfuxake!

PETONE...  I recall the days, many years ago when Atilla Varga had the BBQ Restaurant. He told me a story, as only Atilla can,  about a young Maori Lad who came in and walked the length of the restaurant on the table tops while people were dining, to the delight of his mates. When he got to the end of the restaurant, Atilla was standing there applauding and told him to come into the kitchen for a meal, As the lad walked past a stack of wooden coca cola crates, Atilla took the one off the top and smashed it over his head. Several times!! He apperared back out the front of the restaurant with a face redder than Ferguson's and his mates all did a runner. Tough man our Atilla.  Restaurant is now the Magic Wok.

Brickbat.
Went to the Green Parrot last night for a nostalgic.
Had oysters for an entree. Unfortunatley threw them all down the toilet at about 12.30 am this morning.

At the other end of the scale there's a restaurant called mort subite, which roughly translated means sudden death.  That colourful looking fish and that bamboo cage of chickens you passed on the way in,  are one less when you leave...
Very tender, unsurprisingly fresh and no, they don't kill it twice.

Actually, 20 years later,  they don't do the fish or the cage any more, but lots and lots of beer.

Being a student in search of a quick, cheap and a well sized meal, i cannot look past satay kingdom, left bank, cuba street. they have also opened another shop just across the road (oriental kingdom), same food, a little bit more expensive, flash plates. So satay kingdom wins.

edit: oh, and while you mention curries, I went to a place in Newtown last night and got a mango chicken curry and it was out of this world. sorry - thats their motto. spice planet i think they are called

Planet Spice its called and I'll second that. They are amazing. BYO too as with most Indians, the three sweetest letters in the English alphabet
