There is a big plum tree in the backyard that ive been watching throughout the year. As last Summer I spent many hours sitting atop a ladder picking and eating the beautiful plums straight off the tree.
Ive started this as a fruit tracking thread. To keep track and show the progress of the tree. I hope you can join in too.
There is a lemon tree but that's not as fun, and there are already lemons on it.
What kind of fruit trees do you have in your backyard?

After looking at the bare ugly limbs of the tree for months on end now. Its recently started growing its leaves.

On closer inspection. I see the start of buds growing. meaning flowers, then fruit!

They are looking good. I would say 3-4 weeks and I'll be beginning to pig out on these. Plum jam, sauces and the likes to be made throughout summer.

"...As last Summer I spent many hours sitting atop a ladder picking and eating the beautiful plums straight off the tree..." Health & Safety issue here. You might get bloated then fall off the ladder. Recommend you eat the fruit at ground level. Never stand higher than the top 2 rungs of a ladder.
We've got a fig & lemon tree. I don't eat figs but you have to be quick before the birds get at them just as they come ripe.
Once at the top and hooking the harness around the main trunk, any number of ripe, moist and succulent plums could be plucked from the overflowing yet yielding plum tree and savoured at leisure...

I was hooked into a harness, but a chest one because if I fell forward I might have gone face first into the ladder.
I also had someone holding the ladder while I climbed and sat there.
OSH inspected it and approved it.

Got me thinking...we could plot "free" fruit trees that are on public land on a map, kind of like "fruit tree caching" a la Geocaching
...or we could keep our secret stashes to ourselves!

I know a street with fig trees in it that are growing well. This sunny weather we are having should help things along nicely...hmmm, yum!
To start the ball rolling..this article appeared on WCC site...will be a while to wait yet for the fruit but keep it in mind. www.wellington.govt.nz/news/display-item.php?id=3300
Here's the guy I mentioned earlier...www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/local-papers/the-wellingtonian/4277459/Free-fruit-for-all
and this may be of interest too.Freefood Facebook page

and from that site there's this..its already going!
Free fruit and food map in NZ!
just zoom into Wellington for local trees.

Too many fig and olive trees though.. I dislike both.
Are they reddening up?

Getting a bit of red on the ones that have been exposed to the sun.
And in sime cases, they seem to be getting too big for the limbs they are on. so the limbs definatley looks smaller than the plums.
They are still firm though. Hopefully they will soften up with age. And the ones that were previously a bit high, will drop as time goes on.
