3. Starting threads in the correct forum. Please start threads in the correct forum. The Phoenix forum is just that, a forum for issues surrounding the Phoenix. If you are commenting about news or the A-League in general please use the News forum, chants and the match day experience should go in the chants forum. And remember to pop into those forums as well, there is loads of great banter in there.

Not a clue for you?
Radiation comes in 3 types, alpha, beta and gamma, alpha and beta being particle radiation and gamma being wave radiation. Waves are far more dangerous than particles when it comes to radiation I believe.
I think the kind of radiation that comes from a nuclear reactor is mainly beta (?), I think it consists of neutrons which are able to essentially fuse with your atomic structure and manipulate it which causes mutations such as cancer etc.
Thats all I know, wheres our resident scientest?
We will never fully decide who has won the football.
No carbon emissions. The heat from the nuclear fuel rods heats up the circulating water creating steam which turns the turbines thus generating electricity. It's like water turning the turbines at hydo-electric dams, coal/gas/oil is used to heat up the water in their respective power stations e.g. Huntley is a coal fired station. You don't need much nuclear fuel in terms of volume as compared to, say, coal. And it lasts a long time, hence nuclear powered ships/subs don't need refueling for years.
Thats why I used the term "cost-benefit analysis, compared on other sort of large scale power generating techniques nuclear power is considered to be cleaner and safer than most other things, it isn't perfect, but is better, even in some aspects it is marginal or is not, it makes up for it in other aspects.

Sorry if you thought I was calling you out, I don't word things very well
.And you're right, its all a bit of a crap chute. I am putting all my chips on Fusion power

No worries, I wasn't to sure myself haha. But you're right, it is a bit of a crap chute there at the moment eh?

Alpha/Beta radio are particles, while Gamma is a wave. (effectively a x-ray)
Alpha and Beta radiation, once inside the body, are lethal. However Beta and Alpha radiation can barely penetrate your skin and the most either of this type of radiation can travel is more or less 1 metre.
Gamma radiation is what is released by Nuclear Power plants. It breaks the DNA within cells. If you're only exposed for a relatively short time however, your body should be able to heal itself perfectly fine.
If I were in the vicinity of one of the reactors (i.e. 100kmish) I wouldn't be putting too much thought into it.
Just quickly, a meltdown doesn't mean the palce is going to blow up. The actual nuclear reactions at both plants have stopped. And the way they are built, they're not going to blow up.
That really stretched last years physics :l
