ASB Gardens Magic

89.30pm

Every night from Sunday 11 JanuarySunday 1 February

The Sound Shell, Wellington Botanic Garden

The ASB Gardens Magic series is Wgtn's largest free outdoor concert series- this year's series runs from Jan 11- Feb 1 and covers a broad range of musical genres, guaranteed to have something for everyone.

Pack a picnic, perhaps some wine, and dance in the moonlight.

First week's programme

Sunday 11 January

Zirigidum

Zirigidum mix juicy Brazilian rhythms such as samba-rock, reggae, maracatu and timbalada together with ska, drum'n'bass and Kiwi goodness to create their own flavour. Delicious!

Monday 12 January

Electric Wire Hustle

Fusing the sounds of Marvin Gaye, Charles Mingus and Funkadelic with the likes of J-Dilla, PPP and Sa-Ra.

Tuesday 13 January

Klezmer Rebs

This eight-piece Wellington band plays klezmer music, an exciting world/folk music born out of the Yiddish/Jewish culture of Eastern Europe.

Wednesday 14 January

Ryan Prebble

Join one of Wellingtons young troubadours for an intimate night of bittersweet blues. Ryan Prebble has developed a uniquely percussive style of playing and has performed alongside other artists such as The Inkling, The Chandeliers, The Black Seeds and Fly My Pretties.

Thursday 15 January

Family Cactus

This group of highly-skilled musicians has an organic, prickly sound with all the thorny off-shoots you might expect from past/present members of The Cosbys, The Bonnie Scarlets, Grand Prix, Pig Out, The Accelerants, Good Laika, Bunnies on Ponies and Ricky Boyds Boomshack.

Friday 16 January

Rosita Vai with Soulbound

Funking out to Rosita Vai's originals is the main purpose of 'Soulbound' a mixture of funk, soul, R&B, jazz and gospel. Theyll also play tasty covers from greats like Luther Vandross, Emotions, Aretha Franklin and Chaka Khan.

Saturday 17 January

Groove Generation

Winners of the Wellington final of the Smokefree Rockquest in 2008, Groove Generation are a funk/soul collection of powerhouse drumming, tight grooves and funky jams.

Every night from Sunday 11 JanuarySunday 1 February

The Sound Shell, Wellington Botanic Garden

Second week's programme:

Sunday 18 January

Yulia

Experience a magical performance from a voice of rare and intimate beauty.
Awarded Best Female Vocalist at the 2005 NZ music Awards, Yulia presents her most popular international songs in English, Russian, French, Italian, Spanish and Maori

Monday 19 January

Matt Langley Band

Matt has been writing and performing music in bands and as a solo artist in New Zealand for more than a decade. His unique take on blues, folk, country and rock is underpinned by sweet harmonies and raw live energy.

Tuesday 20 January

Scarlet and Friends

Scarlet are Andy Mauafua and Amanda Hanna-Doull. Backed by some of
Wellingtons finest musicians, they are joined by special guests including outstanding soul singer TJ Taotua, recently signed to Dawn Raid Entertainment. Scarlets fresh arrangements create a unique style
and sound beautiful jazz standards
from the 20s

40s, retro tunes from the 60s and contemporary soul and jazz.

Wednesday 21 January

ROY G and the BIVinators

Driven by Maz Hermon and inspired by
the pulse of life, ROY G and the BIVinators are busy spreading the love wherever
they happen to be. Expect a night of warm reggae vibes and experience the
full spectrum shining through.

Thursday 22 January

Twinset featuring Lisa Tomlins

Twinsets style originated in America in the 1960s a sound that is characterised by pulsing organ bass, rich textural chords and a driving R&B-style beat. This is feel-good music, and unlike some other types of jazz, it comes more from the heart than the head.

Friday 23 January

Tyson Smith

Guitarist/singer/songwriter Tyson Smith relocated to Wellington in late 2006 the latest stop on a musical journey that has included New York, Mexico and Cuba.

With jazz, blues, funk, rock and world music influences, his songs act as vehicles for the interaction and improvisation of the musicians he draws together.

Saturday 24 January

My Golden Soul

Soulful, conscious roots and funky grooves designed to reach beyond the ears of the listener to touch, move and inspire heart, mind, body and soul. The solid rhythm
section consists of drums, keys, acoustic and electric guitars, accompanied by
three backing vocalists, percussion, violin, and a scorching three-piece horn section. My Golden Soul is founded and led by Matiu The Hook Te Huki, who has performed with Fat Freddies Drop and Homefire Burning and continues to perform with Basscamp.

Why go to Phoenix when you can watch Yulia

First week of concerts have been great- 9,000 people to the first five gigs, all class acts, complete variety. The gardens look stunnign afetr dark with the lighting from MJf- if you haven't got down you are missing the iconic Wellington summer event (well, nmaybe after the 7's and Cuba Carnival)- do yourself a favour and get along to at least one night, but get there early- it packs out.

Well Feverish-if this unintelligble gobbledygook is the level of your between song banter i am reconsidering your spot

I saw Rosita tear up the stage large last night. 3000+ seems rather optimistic, 1K were those walking through the Bot Gardens to get home.

I only recognised one song from the entire set, but everyone else seemed to be shaking their booty. Small people were allowed near the front row, too!HarryHotspur2009-01-17 19:56:35

Was at Julia tonight too (after the game, of course). At least with Vai I listened, but after Julia's nauseatingly sugar sweet approach, I went to get a coffee, and played Snuff very loud on the ipod thingy.

The 6 and 3 year old were entranced though...my plans to inculcate their wee minds with punk rock needs fast tracking...

yeah, she was hard yakker- but there was a fair amount of yellow and balck scarves in the crowd, and she has a loyal popera fanbase. i think the series has some real highlights coming up:
Twinset, My Golden Soul, Roy G. (kinda like Kenny G. but newtown reggae styles)
