I'm surpised there's not already a thread

what a catastrophic failure- how many attempts have these numptys had to block it, did they think it could never happen? what other industries are operating without an emergency plan?

Very very disturbing.

One thing is for sure. BP will not be paying for the clean up. You can cast iron guarantee it that they will of course have to pass the costs on to the paying customers at the pumps. This despite them admitting liability.

BP is one of four big oil companies, customers can shop elsewhere.

Will be interesting to see how much damage it does to the company.

I honestly don't think it will do much, people will go where they have fuel dockets and save their $2. People are more motivated by money, than appearing like they care about something.

And its not like this is the first time BP has ruined large areas with Oil. Nigeria has been devastated by BP for years, it's only when it happens near the US does it get press.

Was reading the other day about fears it'd impact Cuba. Miles of pristine, untouched marine environments of huge scientific significance and a massive contributer to Cuba's tourist industry. All under risk because of this. Oy vey.

Really feel for Louisianans too, first Katrina, now this.

It's prompting some unexpected advice for BP.
Take this from Matthew Lynn at Bloomberg (company owned by NY's mayor) - http://www.businessweek.com/news/2010-06-07/bp-needs-to-tell-whining-americans-to-take-a-hike-matthew-lynn.html

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

In the US recently, amazed that the State Govts weren't allowed by Federal Govt to do anything about it/spend on protecting themselves.  It's a bit like seeing seeing a storm coming and not being allowed to shut your windows.
Leaves them open to claims of being partly to blame for their own down fall.

No one seems to mention the 11 dead any more, respect to those dying on the job comes first.

Interesting point - but this is quite possibly a positive of the oil companies in New Zealand. But of their inter-dependence it is unlikely BP can solely increase charges simply to pay for this.

Its interesting what one TV commentator said - that is to see all the officials in the U.S. calling it British Petroleum. It was an American Built oil rig, and American ran. And when the CEO was told that "he could take his golden parachute back to the U.K. and America couldn't do that." during the question thing, I reckon he should've walked out.Michael2010-06-19 17:09:42

Of course it's not just BP in the gun (although they are the main target) since it was another company who were contracted to run the rig and yet another who was responsible for the cutoff valve that failed.

It does seem as if this was a totally avoidable incident (I'll avoid using the word accident because I don't think it was one) since there were multiple warning signs and therefore multiple opportunities to prevent it but the necessary fixes were not made simply because that would have meant stopping production.
