What do people think re the Sportsman of the year? presumably it is out of Dixon, Ashley, Roulston and one other, my pick would be Lee. I know it is ridiculous trying to compare but who do people think? Personally im in the Ashley camp.
Sportswoman is easy, Villi first daylight second
Team would have to the Swindells
Supreme for me is Villi

In 2008 it's in my ( VERY PC) book sportsperson of the year.
Easy choice Wendi Henderson for her second goal in the Kelly Cup Final yesterday... Yep, that good!

For the oldies. Like Andy Gray's diving header for Everton against Notts County in that cup tie but BETTER.

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

This hurts.. and you have to take my word for it (the Evertonians will be angry with me) Wendi's shades it.

I think Dixon, in a year that he won both the championship and the Indy 500, two simply massive achievements. Congratulations by the way Scotty. It is a shame its olympic year, both Scotty and Ashley deserve massive recognition.

Dixon for the mens title for me.But i have to go with Villi for the overall award. The way she dominated her competition  was just brilliant.

I understand the Indy 500 is a FAMOUS race, but being famous doesnt make it the best. Winning the champ is a great effort but lets be honest, if you asked scott dixon before he went to the states where he ultimately wanted to be, hell i bet if you still ask him, he would say formula 1. He has won a high profile gruelling championship but it is not the pinnacle of his sport.
Thats why i would go ashley, but Kent John is having an interesting thinking out loud session now, Nick Willis was the only white man to win a medal on the track at the whole games. Thats a fuking massive effort! the 1500 is a blue ribbon event at any games as well.
I also think Danny Lee is worth serious consideration, especially IF he wins the Eisenhower individual and/or leads the NZ team to a win

2nd warning (both from news)

Motor racing is as much a sport as the Americas cup.
its engineering and electrolyte replacement therapy masquerading as a physical contest

Top drivers would destroy you for fitness... let alone the mental agility to control a vehicle at that speed where the slightest movement and you're dead.

If anything it's a sport requiring double the fitness as the fitness to drive a car is as aerobic as most other sports, plus the mental concentration.

No, afraid not.

Spent all last weekend laid up crook, even piked on my indoor game and an offer of a second tonight.

Naenae team failed due to numbers, and I have run out of time to organise a Fever side.

Race shouldn't factor in their decision as to who is Sportsman or woman of the year.

Three for me, and two for them.

Coach of the year - Robbie Deans. A Kiwi who led the Crusaders to  Super 14 domination AND will lead the Wallabies to Tri Nations victory on Saturday

I know he 'only'got bronze, but for winning a medal in an event that the whole world actually cares about (not putting down board sailing, motor racing etc.) I think Nick Willis has to rate highly up there

With the Kiwis win, they have to be up their for team of the year now. And Kearney for coach of the year? Team of the year will be an interesting decision.

Yes it takes mental agility, but to call it a sport because of that opens the door to spelling competitors/mathematicians being called sportsmen.

And I'm sure most drivers would be fitter than me (by far and way I suspect), but if you have the mental agility surely fitness wouldn't be of concern for a car racer.

Kiwi's team of the year. Still say Titjens (sp) for coach (although this campaign hasn't started to well) simply because of how comprehensively they won and seem to win the world sevens series year in and year out.

And the debate will rage. The Kiwis win a world cup in a sport which is only played seriously in 4 countries (PNG's national sport), they played brilliantly and beat a bunch of snotty nosed poor losers v The rowing twins at an Olympics who were up against all the steroid taking nations that rate rowing as a very serious sport. They make take sentiment into reckoning as well, after the girls were downright miserable 3 months earlier and then retired after their win - having done it twice.

t***er and Devlin had a pretty hilarious 2 hours of radio (9-11am) yesterday about this...personally I'd go for the Kiwis...
