I am in a sporting discussion on another site with a Rugby head, and I made the statement that more people watched the Phoenix last season than watched the Wellington NPC team, and I have been read the riot act, I did of course have the Galaxy game in my equation, can anyone give me approx attendance for the season?
I am sure I read on a couple of occasions that the Phoenix were generating better numbers, and the NPC is struggling as we know....thanks

problem being the NPC is very much a secondary rugby competition. To be fair you would have to compare phoenix games to the super 14.
If you wanted to compare NPC to something it would have to be the NZFC

IIRC the Phoenix had a SLIGHTLY higher average attendance than the Lions last year.
It really doesn't prove a whole lot though, does it? These football code arguements always confuse me (and I'm from aussie, they happen all the time! lol)

The discussion though, is the Phoenix against Wellington Lions, while I appreciate what you are saying that is not the point...Cheers

Fair enough. 11,683 was average for the nix's season last year, but I couldnt find the average for the Lions, which speaks volumes really.

I think it may have been lower. I might just be bored enough to go hunting for figures..

i reckon the reports on the Lie-ins crowds always inflate the numbers, whereas we actually provide the number going through the turnstiles
I reckon Nix - Lie-ins is a good comparison for now
'super'
14 - has saturation Tv/news coverage and the advantage of cultural history behind it - all things change given time

personally i can't be arsed going anywhere near a rugby site - but each to their own

John Morrison on ZB sports said that the Phoenix got more people than the Wellington NPC at the ROF...so if he says it it must be a fact. Someone must have the figures

I'd be surprised if any Lions match broke 10k other than Tana's farewell. I was at every match bar Tasman, and perhaps the spreading out and lack of atmosphere (aside from the away fans) affected my perspective but the attendance always seemed to be very lacking.
Feel free to factor in ticket prices as well to get a better idea of popularity - average ticket price times average attendance sounds about right, seeing as it costs more to see the Phoenix
Supply and demand, plus a price curve.

there were stats thrown around australia at the end of the A league season that in average attendences was 3rd in the west island big sports. behind gay-FL and rugby league. but more than cricket and the super 14. im not sure what that says about it in inz, but its still f**kn impressive.
I have an amazing ability to find my way out of mazes. I'm pathological.

I think the NPC (or to be correct, from this year, the Air New Zealand Cup) is going to be in some financial difficulty due to falling attendances this season.
I believe the NZRU is thinking of cutting back on payments to players - reducing the numbers of pros.
Add to that the just released report on the Rugby World Cup fiasco suggesting that the All Blacks play too many games and shouldn't be in the Air New Zealand Cup, and its status could diminish by the day.

There are discrepancies between the attendance figures for Nix games on that website and what was announced at the time.
I wonder why?

Why imagine it when there are teams that actually wear yellow and black stripes - Aris for one, and AEK used to as well.
And Borussia Dortmund strip from the German Cup final was pretty good too.

No, it's the Fenerbahce kit, and they wear yellow and navy blue. Although admittedly it can look black from a distance, I'm a petty man so thought I'd point it out.

The bastards are wearing yellow shirts this season. They had yellow and black stripes a year or two back, but can't be bothered going through the archives to find the links.

Thanks for the help, the Rugby head, has conceded, for your info, in round figures, The Wellington Lions attracted 75,000 spectators, the Phoenix about 170,000 spectators, the Phoenix had a lot more games but the average was in the Phoenix favour by about 1000 per game, my ending comment to my Rugby "friend" was that if I had stated 18 months a go, that a Soccer team in Wellington would have attracted 170,000 fans in one season I would have been been branded as an idiot....think about it, its been a huge achievement...Kia Kaha
